"At a time when Jews around the world and in New Jersey are celebrating the High Holidays, we are confronted with this ugly symbol of hatred against Jews," the organization's New Jersey regional director, Etzion Neuer, told the newspaper. "Obviously, those responsible for this act were determined to deliver a message of hate on a massive scale.

This does seem to be a hate crime. Prejudice tells us this. This symbol has been hate in the past, so we assume its hate now.
I don't see any situation that this wouldn't be against the Jewish people, but it could be something different.

Then again, is it illegal to cut this into your field?(it is illegal to cut it into someone elses field without their permission.)
Prejudice isn't always bad. But sometimes it is wrong.

Well, it's not like the nazi's invented the symbol...so I guess there's a
really small chance that it's some hindu fellow or such trying to spread
what it really symbolises (can't remember, but the meaning is rather peaceful).

Lets just say that I'm not counting on that though.

Wouldn't the swastika be in reverse then?

I recall hearing that there were two such old symbols, mirror images of each other...
both meaning something rather peaceful and harmless, but don't quote me on this.
My memory on the subject is rather hazy.

Yeah, I saw an old Hindu building with a picture of a backwards swastika.

My memory on it is fuzzy as well.

I think you're thinking of the Manji, which is indeed a Swastika in reverse. It's a Hindu symbol of good luck.

The fact that this swastika is facing "clockwise," and it's been burned into a field during the High Holy Days, makes me think that the intent behind this message is pretty clear.

EDIT: Correction - the Manji is the Japanese name for a swastika, and it can, in fact, be "right-facing" after all. Still, my argument regarding this being burned into a field during the High Holy Days stands.:)

This is true. If it spirals out to the right, it is an ancient symbol representing strength and intelligence, that the Nazi's took. Hindu and Buddhist's used both versions, though I don't recall what the left leaning represented (though it was more benign then the right facing in general)

Some religion used the symbol.
But as it was said, I believe it to be what the poice believe. But this is the prejudice in us telling us this.

And there again. Is this a crime? A hate crime?
No matter what the intention?
I think threat of violence definitely counts as a crime.

In the sort of a trivia/curiosite fashion, we have 600-700 years old Christian stone churches over here dating back to the Catholic times that have swastikas depicted on the walls.

I don't expect vipertäjä to know about the churches :p , but I'm a bit surprised he hadn't mentioned the Finnish Airforces that also used the symbol before the nazis corrupted it.

Yeah, I looked up "swastika" on Wikipedia, and I guess it was a good luck symbol for many pre-WWII aviators.

Didn't work out so well for the Nazi's though.

Yeah yeah...I thought to mention it but seems I didn't.

Indeed can't say I recall the church case, though I know our
airforce used the symbol before the nazis did. Supposedly someone I
fail to remember the name of adopted it from a trip to India.

As bonus trivia, I recall it's still used in Asia as well to some
extent...with some controversy stemming from a manga character that
wears it on the back of his clothing. Can't remember the name of the
manga.

*shrugs* Meh...to be fair, the Luftwaffe was a pretty darn good air force for its time, actually. Its leaders just mismanaged it.

But yes, you're quite right - the swastika didn't really bring the Nazis luck as far as formulating strategy is concerned after '42-ish. Which is probably just as well.:D
