I was in the dentist for a root filling yesterday, except the he kept drilling up through the top of the tooth into the tissue above. I had wondered how I would communicate with the dentist if he hit live nerve, what with my mouth full of hardware and all, that turned out not to a problem. Pass the bottle of tea CC.

I've been recounting the week to people and it's hard for me to focus right now (plus I'm getting over a cold that thankfully didn't hit me until the day I came home). Here's the highlights.

Vancouver
Inside Passage
Ketchikan, AK
Hubbard Glacier
Juneau
Icy Straight Point/Hoonah, AK
Vancouver and home.

Am jealous.

More details when you are feeling better.

Oh, and sorry to have missed you earlier today. I didn't realize that the IM was active on the computer downstairs.

The camera shop just called. A bit of seawater got in my camera, and even though it's taking fine pictures (it seems like it's just the LCD screen fragged - pictures look fine when loaded onto my computer), it seems I need to get my "lens assembly" overhauled. For the mere measly price of AU$900.

Sheesh. Not even sure what I'll do yet.

Why would the lens assembly need overhauling if it was taking good photographs only just not showing them on the LCD screen? Then again it may just have been the LCD that needed replacing before they got their hands on it.

One of our kids borrowed our two week old £89 Samsung S830 and brought it back with a broken LCD, apparently our extended warranty did not cover that. Hah! But a new LCD would have cost £60 or £70. We ended up getting another camera instead.

I would say (1) get a second opinion, or (2) get another camera for a lot less than the repair price of your old one. And buy it somewhere else, I would not trust that shop advises an AU$900 lens assembly overhaul when the problem is the LCD. (3) Don't take it swimming or lend it to teenage daughters.

Was checking stuff out online, it seems that the reason you need to overhaul is that nowadays cheap cameras are built as an integrated system instead of modularly. As such, the LCD circuitry can't be replaced independently of the whole circuit board, and my guess is that the lens assembly is also coupled to the circuit board too intimately.

Nobody would ever mistake a camera for something that evolved, that's for sure. ;)

I will get a replacement one for cheaper. As a matter of fact, I found my original model selling on eBay for about RM300 ($100) cheaper than my parents bought it! Heh. Heh.
