No, if you know the feeling of not knowing how to please God with your words and you can't express how much he means to you that is when you use tounges. When you don't know what to say. If you pray for someone and you don't know what for that is a good time to. I speak in tounges a lot, just because i know only God can understand me when i do. It is my personal time with Him.

Paul said in 1Cor14 that the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. He said this in the context of exercising the gifts of tongues and prophecy. The way I see this quote is that we have the choice of whether we speak in tongues or not. There is no 'force' that takes us over. If that was so, we would not be exercising a spiritual gift in faith. We choose to exercise faith, we are not 'taken over'.

Therefore we have absolute control over whether we choose to speak in English or tongues when we pray.

What we have no control over is the inspiration of the words that we speak. Therefore, we in faith open our mouths and speak a language that we have not learned, and the Holy Spirit inspires us with the appropriate words.

When a person speaks fluently in tongues, they are speaking too fast to be able to make the words up themselves. Therefore, if there is no time to think of the words and speak them, where are the words coming from that flow out of a tongues speaker's mouth? There is a good answer to that:

It is the Holy Spirit giving the words for the speaker to speak. Therefore the words are not coming FROM the mind, but THROUGH it. The origin of the words therefore is the Holy Spirit within our own spirit.

Therefore, when we exercise faith and stop praying in English and start praying in tongues, we are activating the flow of the Holy Spirit through us to God. The Scripture says that from out of our innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. The writer says that he was talking about the flow of the Spirit through us. You can look up your concordance for the reference for that.

I believe that if a person has a manifestation where they lose their own self control and direction, I feel the need to go and cast it out in the Name of Jesus, because it is not of the Holy Spirit. One of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is self control, and anything that 'takes us over' is demonic in origin and needs to be resisted in Jesus' name.
So your saying that God isn't speaking through a person, that person is saying whatever, whenever?
Yes a person has the choice to speak in tongues, if they have this gift. If a person doesn't have the gift of tongues, they shouldn't even try to.
If a person has the gift of speaking in tongues, if the spirit of God isn't leading them to speak in tongues or pray in tongues, they shouldn't. Because they are doing this in self and God has no glory over anyone doing anything in self when God has no part in it.
Speaking in tongues is a gift from God, we agree.
But do you agree that a person can't take lessons on how to speak in tongues. It can't be taught by another person. Only the Holy Ghost is our teacher.

I received the gift of praying in tongues in November of 2002,while pregnant with my daughter! I remember how wonderful it was;within my heart,I heard a Voice telling me to pray in the Language He has given me at least once every day!
Due to the fact that it sounded funny,(the tongues I spoke in),I do it on and off;sometimes it even seems like I start behaving angrily with my family and relatives after I have finished praying and therefore I begin to think it may not be the "right" tongues!
I have had social anxiety from I was a small child, could it possibly be that God wants me to pray in this Language so that I will be more faithful and courageous!
I need someone's advice as this has been on my mind for quite some time!
Thank you for your replies in advance!!! God bless CF!

Satan is not going to give you something to gloryified God. this is your mind (Satan) telling you that your doing it all wrong. When in fact, Satan is mad at you. The more you get from God, the more Satan will come against you. But hold on to God's unchanging hand. God gave you this gift to edify yourself. He didn't give you this gift if he knew you wasn't going to use it. Remember God is not the auther of confusion. Satan is. You keep seeking the Lord and he will make your trials a blessing.

Speaking in tongues is a gift from God, we agree.
But do you agree that a person can't take lessons on how to speak in tongues. It can't be taught by another person. Only the Holy Ghost is our teacher.

The Scripture says that we live and move by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is defined as believing the Word of God and doing it.

If a person believes that they have the gift of tongues and chooses to step out and speak words that they have not learned on the basis of their belief, then they are acting in faith. They are doing it, and the Holy Spirit prays through them as the result of their faith.

Faith is something you DO in response to your belief in the Word of God. It is not something that you hang around and wait for a special feeling before you do it. If you wait for some emotional indication, or the sense of something 'rising up', or some feeling of religious ecstacy before you are prepared to speak in tongues, you are not acting in faith. You are acting according to your feelings, and therefore acting in the flesh, which is sin in the sight of God.

The Scripture says that whatever is not of faith is sin. Therefore if you speak in tongues because you 'feel' something inside of you motivating it, then you are sinning through the flesh and not doing it in faith. In doing this, it is no wonder that people open themselves up to counterfeits and misuse of the gift.

1Cor14 teaches that there is a gift of tongues; that we have to do the speaking; we can choose when to speak it or not to speak it; that the spirit of the tongues speaker and the prophet are subject to the person doing it. This teaches that we have complete control over the use of it.

It is not the manner of speaking it that is important, but the inspiration comes from the words we say to the Lord. A person can make a cold blooded choice, based on the belief that 1Cor14 is true and appropriate for today, to speak words that are not learned. His or her belief in the Word of God gives the assurance that even though the words cannot be understood with the natural mind, the Lord understands and appreciates them. On the basis of that belief, the person acts in faith and does the speaking.

Every person who has accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour has the ability to speak in tongues. This is because the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost and indwelt the 120 who were waiting for Him. Every person who accepted Christ after that was immediately indwelt by the Holy Spirit and received the ability to move in the gifts of the Spirit.

A person who comes to the point of believing that he or she can speak in tongues on the basis of God's Word and the realisation that he or she is filled with the Spirit and therefore has the ability, is able to launch out in faith and start speaking.

How do we know that God has given us the gift? The only indication is what the Word of God tells us. 1Cor14 tells us that we can speak in tongues. Paul says that he would that we all spoke in tongues. He said that under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Therefore the Holy Spirit through Paul tells us all that we can speak in tongues. That is enough for me to know that I can speak in tongues.

I don't need to wait for some special feeling or insight to tell me I can speak in tongues. All I have to do is the read the Word of God and believe it. This is the basis of the whole Christian life. We read the Word of God and believe it in spite of how we feel. We can feel and sense absolutely nothing and yet be operating in the type of faith that thoroughly pleases God. This is because He wants us to simply take Him at his Word and to act on it.

This is how we can know the will of God. It is all written in the New Testament. All we have to do is to read it, believe it, and act on it. The acting on it is faith. There is no substitute.

The trouble is that there are all sorts of ridiculous and stupid teachings about faith blowing around the church today. Much of what people call faith is just fleshly emotion. I feel good therefore I have faith. Nonsense. That's just the flesh feeling good, bringing about a false, counterfeit faith.

The Scripture says that those who live according to the flesh cannot please God. Anyone who acts on sensual or emotional prompting is acting in the flesh, and not with true faith.

True faith is a cold blooded belief in God's Word, and is the action that arises out of a decision to obey the Word and put it into practice.

So to counsel people to wait until 'they know the will of God' before they speak in tongues is false counsel. God has already shown His will in the matter through what has already been written in the New Testament. Waiting for some other prompting or indication is just plain disobedience and unbelief. Remember that God's Word says that disobedience is the same as the sin of witchcraft, so God looks on disobedience and a refusal to take Him at His word as a serious offence against Him.

Faith and obedience to God's written Word are inseparable partners and assures that we remain in His will. There is no other way.

Do you HAVE to speak in tounges every time you pray to please god or what?
No, but there's nothing wrong with doing that.... some churches would call that "praying through", as in submitting your own personal will to follow the Spirit's leading and guidance.... even Paul spoke of speaking in tongues frequently (I Cor 14:18)

I disagree with response #5 and #7. It is a gift but it does is not at your beckon call. The gift of tongues is a gift given by God and used to fill his purpose not ours. Just like the gift of Healings. Notice it is plural, it is given as needed. If it is a gift of "The Spirit" then what would drive us to believe we decide when and where and how it is to be used.

Prayer is prayer. God just wants you to talk with him. Spend time with him. I often pray in tongues, but my entire prayer is not in tongues. There is nothing wrong with wanting to pray in tongues as the Word of God says Covets the best gifts.

God Bless

I feel that the public tongues are a gift with a God-given prompt. In contrast, the personal tongues seem a personal expression of prayer in which we might team with the Holy Spirit to pray for things... sometimes with very little knowledge of the needs. That is not the complete definition, but I find it very much a matter of choice and yielding to participate.
it even seems like I start behaving angrily with my family and relatives after I have finished praying and therefore I begin to think it may not be the "right" tongues!

I need someone's advice as this has been on my mind for quite some time!
Besides your suspicions, and what Rebecca said about evil resistance, there's another possibility. In post 18 Rebecca mentioned discernment.

When we pray in the Spirit, we often get a heightened, strengthened, keener ability in our giftings. God might have been using those times to stand against evil forces at work in everyday life... preventing bad habits from settling in. You might have been more sensitive to the evil around you, and the contrast between the goodness of God and the selfishness of man.

If that's so, then pray through the next time this happens, and ask God to give you effective words and self-control to avoid destructive ones. See what happens.

If you're praying an unknown language while your heart is directed at him, then I would consider your expressions fairly safe. Just don't let go too much -- some people go into a trance-like state; if you do, make sure you're not giving up your territory to a deceptive force. Stand firm. You'll be fine.

I agree with this statement and with it I'll add that the bible says that God has given each of us a gift or gifts, and he told Paul to stir up the gift inside. I have the gift of discernment and at times it is a blessing, but other times, not so much a blessing. Because God reveals things to me that I really didn't want to know about others.

This is a side issue, but there is no gift of discernment that I can find in the Bible. If you are talking manifestations of the Holy Spirit, then there is a gift of discerning of spirits. Not the same thing at all. All of us should have discernment, the ability to tell right or wrong, due to the word that is in us, and the Spirit that we have received. We are all told to try the spirits, whether they be from God. We can do this because we know the Spirit we are of. That is also why Paul continually repeats that the manifestations are by the same Spirit in 1 Co 12. The anointing that is in us teaches us all things. We should all have a witness in our spirit what is of God and what is not.

If you are talking revelation, then it is either a word of knowledge, a word of wisdom or discerning of spirits.

A person whom has the gift of tongues can't speak in tongues whenever they chose. It is God speaking through them. They do not have control over what they speak. For it is the Holy Ghost that has the power.
I'm so confused...
I recently got the gift of speaking in tongues, I can choose to speak in tongues and when not to speak in tongues. Is it still God speaking through me, I don't understand...

Lol, this is such a
good question that you will see people bicker over it for days. (-;

1Co 2:10
For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

Acts 28:25
Paul had spoken one parting word, "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers"

Ro 5:5
The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Ro 8:11
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Zec 7:12
the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets.
(not tongues, but another gift )

Ac 4:25
who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, 'WHY * DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS?

Job 26:4
To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit was expressed through you?
From experience I find that God does impart something and pray through us. There have been times with a strong sense I am praying for strangers in other countries.

Sometimes it feels as though they had prayed for support, and the Holy Spirit grabbed anyone on the planet who was willing to join in.

My will to pray this way is still in control, and I can stop and start whenever, but more seems to get accomplished for others when I keep going, and lean my heart into it a bit -- not let go of consciousness and will, but by add desire to do His will and help people.

Ac 8:18
Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands...

If you are talking manifestations of the Holy Spirit, then there is a gift of discerning of spirits. Not the same thing at all
Many fellowships ignore this one, or resist people saying they have it. Not a lot is mentioned on it, and there are abuses with any named gift.

The Greek word used for distinguishing of spirits (click links), includes benevolent spirits, the rationale of a person, and the Holy Spirit... as well as the intent of a person.

  1.
[*] the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son
[*] the spirit, i.e. the vital principal by which the body is animated
[*] a spirit, i.e. a simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, and acting
[*] the disposition or influence which fills and governs the soul of any one
[*] a movement of air (a gentle blast)

Heb 4:12
For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.
As believers with God's Spirit within us, we also have access to some of his attributes and abilities when needed.

And at any time, we can ask for wisdom. Sometimes normal discernment is simply being sensible and sensitive.

While it is true that speaking in tongues cannot be taught in itself - because the words come from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; there are things that can be taught.

We can be taught how to exercise our faith so that the gift of tongues can flow out from us. Most the questions that I see are not about the possibility of speaking in tongues, but how to start speaking in tongues.

I grappled with this question as a young counsellor in the interdenominational organisation I belonged to. I saw so many people who were so hungry for the gift of tongues but no matter how many times they were prayed for, they could not bridge the gap between knowing that the gift was for them and being actually able to speak it.

I asked the Lord about it. I said "Lord, how can I get people to actually speak in tongues? They believe in it, they want it and yet there is a block. Do they have to spend years waiting, or is there a way to help them activate their faith so that the flow of the Spirit can happen?"

Then the Lord showed me what to do. When I used those principles, I found that people who had struggled for months and years came through effortlessly - and their tongues were genuine. Some of the languages that came out of their mouths were so beautiful that all I could do was to stand back and laugh and rejoice in the grace of God.

It amazed me how that applying some simple principles to activate their faith brought forth such beautiful languages out of their mouths.

Then the Lord taught me a very valuable lesson: I had a young guy who could not come through to tongues no matter what I did and how I encouraged him. It seemed that not even my techniques of faith world work for him. After 20 minutes of trying, I stood back and said to the Lord, "I give up. You are the baptiser in the Holy Spirit and the giver of the gift of tongues. I give him up to You." At that very instant, he said "Oh!" and began speaking a wonderful language that was quite unlike anything I have every heard before.

The Lord then told me that it wasn't the technique, but that it was Him who was the giver of the gift, and that I should always acknowledge that whenever I used the technique He showed me. That was in 1975. I have done that ever since, and I have not seen one person whom I have ministered to fail to start to speak in tongues.

I am now recognised in my faith group as having a ministry of bringing people through to the gift of tongues. I have also led a number of people on this forum through to tongues, because geographic separation is not a barrier to the working of the Holy Spirit.

So it is true that no one can teach the actual language, but we can use methods to activates people's faith so that they can allow the Holy Spirit to flow through them.

You don't have to be confused. You have the power to speak in tongues whenever you want. The miracle of tongues consists in the words that come out of your mouth. Every time you use your faith, believing that the language you are speaking is to God and He understands it, the Holy Spirit is flowing through you in tongues.

Here is a misunderstanding - that the Holy Spirit somehow takes over and out it pours without you having any control over it. That is not faith. And the Scripture says that without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is a deliberate act which you do. Faith is under your control. Every time you choose to speak in tongues you are using your faith. It is your faith, then that opens the gate and allows the Holy Spirit to flow through you to the Lord.

You can start and stop at any time because it is your faith that controls it. You may not have absolute control over the words you are saying because they are inspired by the Holy Spirit, but you can control when and where you speak them.

So don't be confused, just continue using your faith and speak in tongues to the Lord whenever you wish, and the Lord will always honour your faith; because when you use your faith, it pleases Him.

The gift of speaking in tongues is your spirit speaking,..

14 (ASV) For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

That is why the gift can be switched on and off when you desire. The gift of prophecy can be controlled this way also. These two gifts are the only ones listed in scripture that can be controlled by our spirit.

In the assembly, when someone speaks by The Holy Spirit, it is the person yielding to The Holy Spirit's prompting and allowing The Holy Spirit to utilize the gift of tongues for the edification of the assembly. When that happens, it must be interpreted.

The abuses of the gift of tongues are many, as with all the gifts, but seek to know from GOD how to correctly operate the gifts HE gives you, and HE will be happy to give you more.

Hello Oscar, Enjoyed your post's.

Two question's, you mentioned some principles to getting people speaking in tongues. In your first post, you backed off, gave him to God, and he started to roll.
The second principle was teaching them to just speak out by faith, of which both i agree. I just found my self wondering if their was anymore principles?

Question #2 In my first church in the 80's people would prophesie, and tongues before the prophesy would be very seldom. The church i go to today is almost always tongues first and then prophetic interpretation, does it matter if you just prophesy out without tongues first?

God has blessed me to lead a small flock in my home and this why i'm curious, Thanks Oscar

It is a question I have wondered a bit about since I received this gift. I think the thing is to do it when the urge is there, as long as you do it which a sincere heart I think God understands our motivation, to glorify Him and please Him, or pray for others we care about. More often than not speaking from very short term experience, it can just happen, I feel a massive power surge in the Spirit within me and I feel like tingling on my back and the back of my neck (before and especially afterwards), and it just happens, it just feels the right time to utter these tongues. Glory to my wonderful God. Thank You for this gift.

I must say this is a good explanation. Thank you for your reply. I am blessed by it.

The only thought I have is that it is a miracle of GOd and it is given to us through our faith. That is important to grasp. He could not allow it as at that moment as it is his gift to us. Like all other things used to glorify him.

Great post, thanks again.

God Bless
