I recently got the gift of speaking in tongues, I can choose to speak in tongues and when not to speak in tongues. Is it still God speaking through me, I don't understand...

From experience I find that God does impart something and pray through us. There have been times with a strong sense I am praying for strangers in other countries.
Sometimes it feels as though they had prayed for support, and the Holy Spirit grabbed anyone on the planet who was willing to join in.
My will to pray this way is still in control, and I can stop and start whenever, but more seems to get accomplished for others when I keep going, and lean my heart into it a bit -- not let go of consciousness and will, but by add desire to do His will and help people.

If you are talking manifestations of the Holy Spirit, then there is a gift of discerning of spirits. Not the same thing at all
Many fellowships ignore this one, or resist people saying they have it. Not a lot is mentioned on it, and there are abuses with any named gift.
The Greek word used for distinguishing of spirits (click links), includes benevolent spirits, the rationale of a person, and the Holy Spirit... as well as the intent of a person.

Heb 4:12

As believers with God's Spirit within us, we also have access to some of his attributes and abilities when needed.
And at any time, we can ask for wisdom. Sometimes normal discernment is simply being sensible and sensitive.
