Is long hair on man shameful?

"Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him?"
1 Corinthians 11:14

If there was ever a verse in the Bible that caused me much grief and pain with my parents and church as a young man, it is this one. :(

I'm pretty sure it is taken out of context here and there must be some cultural aspect that is being overlooked. We would do well to properly exegete this passage in order to spare any more unnecessary turmoil and conflict between male Christian youth and those legalistic adults who would deem 'hippies' in the church as rebellious, effeminate, sinning against God and bringing shame to the cause of Christ. Maybe times have changed a great deal since the 80's, I don't know. I think appearance is always going to be an issue for the conservative folk in the church though.

Needless to say, having this passage used as a tool of condemnation against me as a young man was not fun in the least. And it was used against me plenty, believe me. :sigh:

OK dude? That mullet ... just HAS TO GO. :o

The other 2 are OK but that mullet, that AWFUL mullet, good gravy man what WERE you thinking? :D

Hehehehe my old pix I look just like I do now, only a little younger. ;)

LOL. ^_^

Okay, I should probably let you and Mankin know that I didn't have my hair cut into a mullet for the baptism pic! I was just poking fun at the photo for the way it looked.

The sides of my hair are actually combed back into a ponytail in the fine tradition of vintage Gene Simmons. You just can't see it very well because of the angle.

I was told to do this by the pastor so the congregation could see my face and so I wouldn't have wet strands of hair hanging like seaweed in my face.

When my son was little all the rage was for boys to have "rat tails". ^_^ So my son ran around with a rat-tail cut for years.

Now he keeps shaving all his hair off. ARGH I wish he would not do that. But hey it's his head.

I love my son more than anything, and the feeling is mutual. He made me a mix CD. Now, anyone can make a mix CD of whatever, but when someone makes you one that shows they GET you? That's special.

That's my son. He GETS me.

My son and I share similar tastes in music -- but that's not the whole picture. I mean the songs he picked show ... he's been Paying Attention.

Or else he's been tapping into an Information Source if you get my drift ... it was uncanny in that sense ...

I tested him by emailing him and saying, "I am instructed to inform you that the mix CD worked" but he just emailed back a smiley and didn't say a word.

DANG i hate when that happens. :D Confirm or deny!! Confirm or deny!! ARRRRGGGHHHHH!~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this from a church that probably has pictures of a long haired, blue eyed looking European and labelling it Jesus - so funny.

Paul was inspired to write this under the cultural factors he lived under, the same for the text of womens hair being her covering, women not speaking in church, women being the weaker vessal (yeah right you men try giving birth or having periods) etc
NE way
This reminds me of back in the day a person with locks was expected to cut them off, one presumed he/she was a Rasta now we recognise that having a locks is not the monopoly of Rastafarians and predates that religion. To many its just a hairstyle and many christians including me have locks now. However I understand in the West Indies thay still equate locks with Rastas and can't get over it seeing it on an Adventist head -(smile)

Hmmmmm

Ah yes, the "rasta" locks....

I will say this......

"MY" locks where for a perfect seven year period and for a "perfecting process"

Yup, they did indeed cause somewhat of a stirr.... and yet, the others at that church did the same for other reasons....

I rather had chosen, among other reasons, to follow the "rite" that the nazarines did... though I admit I did not succeed in the studying part, I did indeed acheive my goal of growing my locks for seven years.... and I can also say that it was a very "different" period of my life....

I would not change it for the world..... though I still sport my natural hair, and am even growing it back.. not sure that locks would be the way to go back to... but..... for what it meant, I may... who knows...

And I truly believe that THAT IS the issue, we get hung up on the things we do not know and or understand and are afraid of.....

Night you should have seen the dude I saw in Hot Topic tonight. I went in there to get some black nail polish and a H.I.M. tee shirt ... anyway this dude had his hair back in one long tightly wound ponytail hanging like a piece of rope from the back of his head and dude, that PONYTAIL literally was down to his KNEES. :o I kid you knot!!!

I hope you just meant the hair and not the face, because that guy is butt-ugly!

LONG LIVE MULLETS!

Once again, it wasn't a mullet!

Man, I should have never posted that pic...

Actually, it does look like Weird Al! Rofl. Sorry, Night. But the hair matches. Granted, not the face. :p

As for the actual hair, I think it's cool. I always prefered long hair on a guy and always will.

Is it a sin? Personally, I believe it depends on the individual. If the Spirit inspires someone to cut their hair short because of that passage, than great. If someone feels no guilt from it, then that's fine too.

Did not the Nazarenes (I think that's what they were called) have to agree not to cut their hair for the amount of time? I don't think it's a big thing to be worrying about, when you consider all of the actual sins of the world we need to keep in check. ;)

God inspired me to stop wearing jewelry and heavy makeup, not because the church or Bible says it..but because, through getting to know Him I understood the vanity in it all and it has become forign to who I am now. I think it'd be the same with long hair. I'm hardly going to condemn someone for wearing jewelry, but I know that it's a personal decision that I made which makes me feel closer to God.

Blessings and Love,
Sarah

P.S. Mullets were cool, in their own way. ;) Better than those who shave their heads, in my opinion.
