We're halfway there...as an acceptable answer to the question of "what kind of coke do you want?" would also be "Pepsi."

Score!

 And we have our first loser! Thank you for participating, best of wishes, here's your coach tickets back to Yankeeland. :p

Don't forget Dr Pepper! That's a kind of Coke, too. :)

Definitely! I love Dr. Pepper too. :)

Erm, nope...but it sounds pretty twisted.

Why do you ask, dear Redguard?
It's not that twisted, but it is a bit too risque for the average CFer.

Anyway, I ask because I watched it this weekend and the setting is in England. But there was this one student in the movie whose accent was a lot different from the rest of the kids and I just found it hard to understand what he was saying. I was tempted to turn on the captions so that I could read my way through the movie.

I searched him on IMDB and it says that he was born in Northern Ireland. Maybe I have trouble understanding Irish accents?

I really enjoy soft to moderate Irish accents (a lot :yum: ), but I agree that Irish and Scottish brogue is really hard to understand. The cadence is just so different than the accents and voices that I'm accustomed to, and it's hard for me to know how to listen, lol. That sounds weird, maybe.

So, yeah, I haven't seen the movie, but I agree that that's a tough accent to hear and understand if you're not accustomed to it.

Yeah. Our church pastor is Irish. He doesn't have an accent, but when he impersonates his mom or dad, I can understand what he's saying easily.

But the kid in the movie was about as coherent, to me, as Charlie Brown's parents and teachers. :)

lol...you say fixin'...!! :D :p:tutu:
I'm fixin' to say fixin' now!! Oops...lol

"Y'all" is definitely part of my vocabulary. The amount of time I lose the "g" at the end of a word is directly proportionate to the time I spend around country speakers. :p
I'm totally agreein with ya!

What do you call a carbonated, sugary, fizzy drink? Hmmm?
I think I say "soda" sometimes. But never "pop!" haha

I finally thought of a word - drawer

When I lived in California my co-workers used to make me say it just to laugh at me.

nice, huh?
Oh, I never can say that one quite right.

Hey everyone,

Remember the Ham Sandwich Project?

Check this out: it's called the Speech Accent Archive, and it's got people from all over the world (and with varying experience speaking English) reading the same paragraph so you can compare their accents. It's super-cool. :)

Thanks felinity! If you hadn't bumped this thread I would never have known it existed! It's fantastic...I love hearing other people's accents.

Problem is the only accents I can listen to are million pieces and heatherjay...the others all say something like "file not found"...is that because this thread is quite old? :(

South Africans have many different accents. It doesn't so much depend on your region as it does on your home language. I'm sure they would sound completely different to you but South Africans can hear straight away when somebody else is from SA.

If I feel brave I might post mine

Unlike most Australian females, I actually detest the English accent. I'm up for Cockney when done in fun, but I couldn't stand it on a daily basis. When I was in the UK to visit Digit's parents this past Christmas, I was able to listen to the undiluted common English accent (not Cockney) and... it's polished, is as much as I can say. They sound proper, but I have no real love for the sound.

I always told my sister that I could never marry a Britishman, so imagine how pleased I was to discover that due to Digit's extended residence in South Africa, he sounded completely different to the Poms...! :D

Living in Australia, more specifically in Melbourne, we have two general kinds of accents (not including all the migrants who've learned to speak English here). There's again a 'common' kind, which is fairly understated and is more neutral than anything else. Then there's the bogan version, which is horrific, but is probably what most people from overseas associate with Australians, thanks to the likes of Steve Irwin... I don't think I'm alone in saying that a great proportion of native (city-living) Australians can't stand the bogan (/ocker) accent... why do Americans love it so much?!

I'm with those who enjoy Irish/Scottish accents, too. :)

This isn't marriage related...but anyways...
I know people from different regions have accents. Soooo, this question is for those of you that DON'T live in the USA. Do you think Americans have accents? Do you like the way they talk or not? Can you tell by hearing them if they are from the East Coast, West Coast, or the South?

And this next question is for everyone: Which accent do you like?

I love how women sound with Australian accents. And sometimes I think a man with an English accent sounds cute.

I used to work in a call centre that serviced American clients so yes I can tell to a certain degree where someone is from. Certain southern accents were very hard to understand even though they sound kinda cute LOL!

On the whole, I really enjoy Trinidadian and Guyanese accents- they are very musical sounding.
