What day is the Sabbath?

Not open for further replies.
The Bible says that the seventh day is the Sabbath day.

Exodus Chapter 20

10: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The first day of the week is Sunday, the seventh day of the week is Saturday. Jesus kept the Sabbath holy, and His Sabbath was Saturday the seventh day.

Genesis 2:2,3 tells us that God actually made the Sabbath at the time of the creation, when He made the world. He rested on the Sabbath and blessed it and sanctified it (set it apart for a holy use).

The 4th commandment which was the Sabbath commandment begins with the word "remember", because God knew that people would forget His Sabbath day. He has never commanded anyone anywhere to keep any other day as a weekly holy day.

That assumes your week starts on a Sunday, doesn't it?

Honestly, aren't the days of the week (meaning the names & which days are considered "ends"), themselves, an arbitrary, human construct?

If you are trying to live by the Law, it might be important to know exactly which 24-hour period to keep holy.

But, what if instead, we were to attempt to live every day in a way that is pleasing to the Lord and choose to set aside a portion of our busy-ness to spend quiet time with God in meditation and reflection?

That, Kevin, is human reasoning. If God had wanted for us to just keep any day of the week holy, then He would have said for us to do that. Of course we should spend time each day with God in quiet time and reflection. But God determined and even commanded us to regard the Seventh Day as a special day to be set aside for rest.

"thus ye have made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition." "In vain do they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" Matthew 15:6,9

"And her prophets have daubed them with untempered mortar, ...saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken." Ezekiel 22:26,28

We honor Christ by obeying Him, (John 14:15) -not by substituting man-made requirements or ideas in place of His. And Jesus evidently knew when the Sabbath day was, and kept the day holy. "And He came to Nazareth, where He was brought up; and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, for to read." Luke 4:16

The Sabbath will even be kept as a holy special day in heaven.

 Isaiah 66:22,23

22: For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23: And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Doesn't the sabbath start at Sundown friday until sundown Saturday? But no we do not have to keep the literal sabbath any longer. The real intent behind the sabbath was to take a day to worship God and rest in Him. It was not intended to be so legalistic as the Jews made it into.  But like many of us we like rigid rules so we can try and feel good and not do the hard thing and that is to keep the spirit of the law.

We are always to do all we can to please the Lord, but one day out of 7 is for our sake so we can rest.

It actually takes 365.2421896698 for the Earth to travel around the Sun. You could do a study, but a Bible year is actually 360 days. You can find a internet site that will explain it a lot better than I could.

If you knew the first day of the first year, then just add 6000 years and you would know when Jesus is going to return. As far as I know, no one knows the exact day or the exact year that will take place.

Time as we know it is based on God's 7000 year plan of redemption & restoration. The last 1000 years is a time of rest for the Son's of God who will enter into His rest. It is all very exact and precise.

Jesus kept the Seventh day Sabbath. It was the Jews who turned it into a rigid law and who made it exacting and tedious. Jesus came to show how the law should be kept, in spirit . He said it was lawful to do good on the Sabbath and taught that keeping the Sabbath did not mean that we ought to always isolate ourselves away but that it was also a day to do good to help your neighbor. The Jews had forgotten about love, but only kept the letter of the law. Jesus kept both the letter and the Spirit of the Law.

In fact, Jesus Himself said "It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail." Luke 16:17 and God Himself said, "My covenant will I not break, not alter the thing that is gone out of my lips." Psalm 89:34

Jesus said; "If ye love Me, keep My commandments." In the Book of Revelation it says "Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life and enter in through the gates of the city." Rev 14:12

When the lawyer asked Jesus about the ten commandments, this is what was said:

Matthew 22:

36: Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38: This is the first and great commandment.
39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Romans 13:

8: Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9: For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10: Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

The law and "love" are the same thing... love to God is shown by keeping the first 4 commandments and love to our neighbor is shown by keeping the last 6. People realize that they must not worship idols, take God's name in vain, kill their neighbor, steal from their neighbor, commit adultery.... Love is the summary of the 10 commandments. But we cannot make up our own rules about what love is, because God has already set down those rules and said they would never change... although He also said that men would try to change them.

But then, eve though they agree with following every other commandment...  for some reason they pick out the Sababth commandment and decide that it is up to them to decide what to do about it. But God said to remember the Sabbath, and no wonder He said that, for people try to forget it... and He said that it is the 7th day. Jesus knew that, and the Apostles knew that and kept the 7th day Sabbath after Christ's death on the cross.

Jesus taught that we should keep the commandments... Mt:5:19: "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Mark 10:

17: And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18: And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19: Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20: And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21: Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

When the man asked Jesus what to do that he may inherit eternal life, Jesus said "Thou knoweth the commandments"... He did not say that we didnt have to keep them.

From what I understand, the Jews, to this day, keep Saturday (Sabado -Spanish for Saturday-yes, people where keeping the Sabbath in Europe a long time ago) as the Sabbath as they always have. The disciples kept the Sabbath. For example read:

Mary kept the Sabbath. Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. The first day of the week here was the very first Easter Sunday.

Paul kept the Sabbath. Acts 13:42-44 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath , and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

Paul emphasized the commandments. Romans 13:9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

James emphasized the commandments. James 2:10,11 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

It amazes me how many sincere Christian groups protest abortion (killing-6th commandment) and inappropriate contentagraphy (fornication, adultery-7th commandment and 10th commandment), laws concerning how we ought to treat our neighbors, with a strong zeal but completely ignore the 7th day (Saturday, Sabbath-4th commandment) a law that concerns how we ought to treat our Lord Jesus (GOD).

Jesus said: John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. I understand that Jesus wrote the 10 Commandments with His own finger.

Thanks for replying, sakamuyo.

Thanks Sean.

I believe that the Bible instructs us to serve Jesus in the way He asked to be served. This is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Although Jesus loves us with an everlasting love, He means what he says. Please see the following for example: Genesis 4:3-7; 2 Samuel 6:6,7 and Numbers 20:7-12.

The sabbath is no longer a day, but a person who is Lord of the sabbath. We rest in Him - Jesus the Christ (annointed).

Matthew 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Hebrews 4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Where is this written in the Bible?

Matthew 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Yes, Jesus came to show us how to keep the Sabbath in the Spirit just as he taught us how to love our neighbors in the Spirit. For example, if we hate our neighbor, we have committed murder in our hearts.

Remember Jesus, Himself, kept the Sabbath. Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was , he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink , or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
This has nothing to do with the weekly Sabbath or daily food or drink. This verse refers to ceremonial offererings and yearly Sabbaths like Passover.

Hebrews 9:7-10 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks , and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

Ezekiel 45:17 And it shall be the prince's part to give burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and drink offerings , in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths , in all solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make reconciliation for the house of Israel. Note this does not speak of "the Sabbath or the Sabbath day (the weekly Sabbath).

You left out a few texts that help the context. Hebrews 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. In other words Jesus did not speak of any other day as being the day of rest but the seventh day (the Sabbath).

Note that the disciples kept the Sabbath years after Jesus' death. Jesus expected this. Matthew 24:20,21 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day : For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Claudia said it well when she added that she said that we will be keeping the Sabbath in heaven like Jesus.
Isaiah 66:22,23 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD. The book "National Sunday Law" is not for the faint of heart, but for honest searchers.

Did Jesus or any other person in the Bible not keep the Sabbath or told us to keep another day? If so, please show me where it is written. I believe in the Bible and the Bible only.

The honest Bible truth is that Sunday is a false man-made Sabbath, a man-maid tradition.

Thank you for replying, raphe.

In Christ we have a better covenant. Hebrews compares the old covenant and the better covenant and what we have through Christ and His fulfillment of the law. The comparison in chapter four is between old and new which is the case throughout Hebrews in showing us what we have in Christ.

Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Hebrews 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
Hebrews 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Go back and read Heb. 4:10 again and see that the comparison is made of the rest we enter into in Christ and through he better covenant to the old rest that God took from His works. The work is finished in Him so the verses in Col.2:16, Paul wrote, were given to those that kept on requiring works of the old law, including circumcision and observing the sabbath day. What do you think these verses mean? Our labor, now is to have faith in the work He did for us.

Heb. 4:11 ¶ Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

He is our rest and we are also hidden in Him (Col. 3:3,4). He is the Lord of the Sabbath because He is out sabbath rest. Sabbath means rest and the rest we have in Him and His work through the cross is what we are to boast of - not our vain works of obedience to a day which are like filthy rags compared to His work and sacrifice on the cross. Why go back and blieve that our works would be superior to the work of God through His Son's final and once for all work at the cross. To believe Him and honor Him with our faith - that He did accomplish this work, is more precious to Him than gold, whereas those that seek to honor Him with the law must perform all of it to not be guilty breaking it all.

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

Heb 4:7 - Again he limiteth a certain day,.... Since the seventh day of the creation was a day of rest which God entered into, and not man; and since the land of Canaan was a typical rest, which the unbelieving Israelites did not enter into, because of unbelief; and yet there must be persons, and there must be a time for them to enter into the true rest which God has left a promise of; therefore he has limited, fixed, and appointed a certain day, the Gospel dispensation, for believers to enter into it:

Heb 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, Today, after so long a time; as it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Heb 4:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Heb 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

My Bible is KJV and has Joshua in 4:8 as the comparison and 4:7 has the saying of David in Ps. 95 about the not hardening of heart.
Heb 4:4-7 -

He spake in a certain place. In Gen_2:2. There it is stated that "God rested on the seventh day from all his works." The Sabbath rest was therefore established long before Israel was denied entrance into the rest. Hence it is not the rest.

In this place again. In Psa_95:11, which declares that Israel should not enter into God's rest. Though Israel had kept the rest of the Sabbath, they had not entered into God's rest, as this language shows. The rest of the Sabbath is not then the promised rest, nor is Canaan below, from which nearly all Israel was once excluded, because David exhorts the people, though in Canaan, to enter into the rest.

Seeing . . . that some must enter. Since God has a rest for his people, and it is not made in vain, there must be some who enter therein. Those to whom it was first offered entered not because of their unbelief. Hence it remaineth to all who, like Joshua and Caleb, have faith.

Again he limiteth a certain day. The thought is that there is a day of opportunity. If that day is passed by, the opportunity is gone. The word of the Lord is, To-day if, etc.

Heb 4:8-11 -

For if Jesus. "Joshua" in the Revision. Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew word Joshua. Joshua led Israel over the Jordan into Canaan, but that did not give them complete rest. If that had been true, David would not have exhorted them to seek to enter into rest. Five hundred years after they entered Canaan this exhortation is given in the 95th Psalm.

There remaineth therefore a rest. Since God has a rest for his people, and neither the Sabbath nor Canaan is the rest, these being only types of that rest, a rest remaineth to the people of God.

For he that is entered into his rest. When God rested on the Sabbath, the type of the true rest, his works ceased. So when our rest comes, weary toil, trials and sufferings will be over.

Let us labor therefore. Since this glorious rest, the heavenly rest, remains for faithful believers, we should seek to enter upon it, and especially take heed that we do not come short through unbelieving disobedience as did Israel.

Our rest is in Jesus. Let us not fall short through unbelief and lack of faith.

Claudia,

I’m sure your book is very interesting but I have already researched this for myself. I can find no historical evidence, whatsoever, that the early church, in the years immediately after the apostles, worshipped on any other day but Sunday.

Here are some quotes on the subject with a link. There is much, much more at this site.

http://www.bible.ca/H-sunday.htm

Saturday (Sabbath) or First day?
What day did early Christians worship on???

The first day (Sunday) IS THE LORD’S DAY!
Original Quotes on this page!

The Historical Record!
  1. Christians always worshipped on the first day (Sunday)
  2. They state that they stopped keeping the Sabbath to worship on Sunday started with the apostles. None of say they kept the seventh day Sabbath. The only mention of Sabbath keeping was by Eusebius in 300 AD by a cult-sect known as the Ebionites, who Eusebius says also worshipped on the first day. (Ebionites were a cult of Judaizers who enforced circumcision, rejected Apostle Paul’s teachings, denied Jesus' virgin birth and his deity.)
  3. They partook of the Lord’s Supper (communion) every first day.
  4. They called the first day (Sunday) the Lord’s day.
  5. They called the day Jesus rose from the dead, the Lord’s Day.
  6. They said the reason they worshipped on the first day, was because it was a weekly memorial of the day Jesus rose from the dead!
  7. They outright state that no one prior to Moses (Adam, Noah, Abraham etc) ever kept the Sabbath because it was Moses who first gave the Sabbath law and the ten commandments to man!
  8. Augustine actually stated that Christians are bound to keep 9 of the ten Commandments [because the New Testament repeats and re-introduces them in a different form] but are free to break the Sabbath!
  9. The earliest Christians never considered Sunday to be a rest day or the Sabbath. You will observe that the first mention of Sunday being a day of rest was in 220AD by Origen. This is the beginning of the current false doctrine, that Sunday is the Christian Sabbath, as taught by most churches today.
  10. While Sabbatarians will quote 20th century authors who guess about what happened 1900 years earlier, we quote Christians whose writings are 1900 years old and spoke what they saw!

(Date of the writing given first)
  • 74 AD The Letter of Barnabas "We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead" (Letter of Barnabas 15:6-8).
  • 90AD DIDACHE: But every Lord's day, do ye gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord... [Matt. 5:23-24] (The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, , Chap. 14:1, Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 7, page 381)

Note Ignatius was a disciple of John the beloved, writer of the Gospel, three epistles, and Revelation. DO you suppose he knew the truth?
  • 107AD IGNATIUS: Be not deceived with strange doctrines, nor with old fables, which are unprofitable. For if we still live according to the Jewish law, we acknowledge that we have not received grace... If, therefore, those who were brought up in the ancient order of things have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord's Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death (which some deny), through which mystery we received faith, and on account of which we suffer in order that we may be found disciples of Jesus Christ our only teacher, how shall we be able to live apart from him for whom even the prophets were looking as their teacher since they were his disciples in the spirit?... let every friend of Christ keep the Lord's Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days of the week. It is absurd to speak of Jesus Christ with the tongue, and to cherish in the mind a Judaism which has now come to an end. for where there is Christianity there cannot be Judaism.... These things I address to you, my beloved, not that I know any of you to be in such a state; but, as less than any of you, I desire to guard you beforehand, that ye fall not upon the hooks of vain doctrine, but that you may rather attain to a full assurance in Christ... (Ignatius, Epistle to the Magnesians, chp 9. Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, pg. 62-63.)
  • 130AD BARNABAS: Moreover God says to the Jews, 'Your new moons and Sabbaths 1 cannot endure.' You see how he says, 'The present Sabbaths are not acceptable to me, but the Sabbath which I have made in which, when I have rested [heaven: Heb 4] from all things, I will make the beginning of the eighth day which is the beginning of another world.' Wherefore we Christians keep the eighth day for joy, on which also Jesus arose from the dead and when he appeared ascended into heaven. (15:8f, The Epistle of Barnabas, 100 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, pg. 147)
  • 150AD EPISTLE OF THE APOSTLES.- I [Christ] have come into being on the eigth day which is the day of the Lord. (18)1
  • 150AD JUSTIN: ...those who have persecuted and do persecute Christ, if they do not repent, shall not inherit anything on the holy mountain. But the Gentiles, who have believed on Him, and have repented of the sins which they have committed, they shall receive the inheritance along with the patriarchs and the prophets, and the just men who are descended from Jacob, even although they neither keep the Sabbath, nor are circumcised, nor observe the feasts. Assuredly they shall receive the holy inheritance of God. (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 207)
  • 150AD JUSTIN: But if we do not admit this, we shall be liable to fall into foolish opinion, as if it were not the same God who existed in the times of Enoch and all the rest, who neither were circumcised after the flesh, nor observed Sabbaths, nor any other rites, seeing that Moses enjoined such observances... For if there was no need of circumcision before Abraham, or of the observance of Sabbaths, of feasts and sacrifices, before Moses; no more need is there of them now, after that, according to the will of God, Jesus Christ the Son of God has been born without sin, of a virgin sprung from the stock of Abraham. (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 206)
  • 150AD JUSTIN: But Sunday is the day on which we hold our common assembly, because it is the first day of the week and Jesus our saviour on the same day rose from the dead. (First apology of Justin, Ch 68)
  • 150AD JUSTIN: Moreover, all those righteous men already mentioned [after mentioning Adam. Abel, Enoch, Lot, Noah, Melchizedek, and Abraham], though they kept no Sabbaths, were pleasing to God; and after them Abraham with all his descendants until Moses... And you [fleshly Jews] were commanded to keep Sabbaths, that you might retain the memorial of God. For His word makes this announcement, saying, "That you may know that I am God who redeemed you." (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 204)
  • 150AD JUSTIN: The commandment of circumcision, requiring them always to circumcise the children on the eighth day, was a type of the true circumcision by which we are circumcised from error and evil through the resurrection from the dead on the first day of the week of Jesus Christ our Lord. For the first day of the week, although it is the first of all days, yet according to the number of the days in a cycle is called the eighth (while still remaining the first). (Dialogue 41:4)

But never mentioned Sabbath keeping, in this list!

But never mentioned Sabbath keeping, in this list. Nine of the commandments are reiterated in the N.T. but not Sabbath keeping.

Jesus said: John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. I understand that Jesus wrote the 10 Commandments with His own finger.
My Bible says that יהוה (YHWH) wrote the commandments.

The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath - Mark 2:27

God designated the Sabbath so that we would remember to set time asside to focus all of our attention on Him. Without these reminders, it is easy to forget Him in our lives. However, when we choose to give our attention fully to God is irrelevant. Only that we do so is important.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Rest

1. Gr. katapausis, equivalent to the Hebrew word _noah_ #Heb 4:1
2. Gr. anapausis, "rest from weariness" #Mt 11:28
3. Gr. anesis, "relaxation" #2Th 1:7
4. Gr. sabbatismos, a Sabbath rest, a rest from all work #Heb 4:9 R.V., "sabbath"), a rest like that of God when he had finished the work of creation.

A matter of translation, probably, but similar and the same word.

Every commentary I can dig up agrees that Heb.4:8 refers to Joshua and not Jesus Christ as the one who could not lead Israel into rest.
