• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hello I have some good news for those who have been hurt or those who keep getting hurt over and over again. #1. you get hurt. #2. it leads to depression because that part of the brain is unresponsive. Depression can worsen the feeling of hurt soooooooo bad. I have learned something today.. To keep your brain motivated and occupied at all times, try not to get bored.. exercise, remember, keep your brain motivated at all times so that it doesn't have time to think about the pain.. maybe that will help?

Sincerely,
BBTT

I don't mind you expressing your opinion so I hope you don't mind me expressing mine

if it were that easy, why would there be people with depression

I have tried the "keeping your brain busy" approach or as I (and my professionals) call it - distraction

it does work for a while, but it is tiring, it takes a lot of concentration and (from experience) you can't keep it up forever

works for me though, to get me through a short crisis

If I may attempt to interpret...

I think that bbtt's advice is not for the clinically depressed, those with chemical imbalances that severely affect their emotion. I believe that he/she is advising those of us who are oing through tough times of emotional stress. If you let your mind grow idle, you begin to dwell on the negative thoughts. Instead of sitting around dwelling on them, get up and do something productive. If there is no housework or homework or jobwork, and no friends are currently available, exercise. I believe that there are a couple of sayings along the lines of: "Idle hands are the devils tools" and "An idle mind is the devil's playground."

's!! how's this for you.. lol, i agree with all of you.
each of us are wired different. and sometimes we need to try different things at different times to aid us in our life exsperiances. instead of comparing points, how about we compare resources and managiung skills?...
example: bbtt says... keeping busy and being active. what kind of sports help you, or do you get into?
jay... what does help you, or what do you like to do?
Eska... looks like you look to scriptures and just keep trying to focus? ...
me ;) boy do i have a list. lol i'm always bouncing from one thing to another. nature, meditating spiritually and ministering is a big part of how i manage being mentall ill.
but feeding ducks, art work, playing with my kids, and sedivities are among my other management skills. lol (note the seditive: take with pop corn, chocolates or soda and a movie) ^_^

As it happens I am not particularily chemically inbalanced but that does not mean that I am not clinically depressed. The things that I struggle with are "emotional stress" but I have been dealing with them for over 14 years (all my life if I am honest). Anyway, I don't want to argue

things that help me, to get help, I am currently in an intensive psychotherapy programme, I attend every weekday for anything up to two and a half years. I am very lucky, there is only one such place in the whole of Scotland and it is near me!! Also, given that they take referrals from all over Scotland and that there are only 16 places in total then I am very lucky to have a place.

I also like to do physical things to get the endorphins flowing, I love walking but it quite hard as I have incredibly bad knees and have to use a crutch but I like to try as much as I can

anyway, I have to be at therapy in less than 9 hours so I suppose I ought to go and get some rest!!
