How could/can that be. Did God make obsolete laws? ; or which laws of the Old Laws are no longer in effect?

Dear Hank,

I think we find a good reference in Hebrews 8:13 (NKJV)
"In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away."

The whole OT is obsolete. However the NT repeats what is necessary for Christians.

The old law is not obsolete. The Old law was fufilled by Christ (the book of hebrews explains this well), by his sinless life, his sacrifice on the cross for our sin and his resurection from the grave.

Those who by faith, believe in Christ, are freed from requirements of the old law (various ritual practices of exodus, leviticus and deuteronomy). we are also freed, from the judgement of sin and death, and have eternal life.

The Old Law was obsolete once the New Law came into effect...because we can't have two in effect at once.

Say a man makes a will...he has one son...and wants to give his $1,000,000 to his son. But then later in his life he has a daughter and he decides to make a new will to give each child $500,000. Now once the new will is in effect, does the old will apply or is it outdated?

Dear Hank,

The law was "our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster." (Gal. 3:24-25)

These Jews HAD to follow the Law if they wanted to be a servant of God.  Once the New Law came into effect, they must then follow the New Law to have the GRACE & FORGIVENESS offered through the New Law as a result of Jesus' death.

The book of Hebrews is about the Jews wanting to "go back", but the author (inspired of God) is saying that there is a BETTER Law, that is the New Law.

This is a blatant misrepresentation of the New Covenant of the Tanach.

The Hebrews 8 reference of Jeremiah 31

The actual new covenant states:
Jer 31:33
But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

As you can clearly see, this is not to replace the old covenant which is eternal. The new covenant will place the God's law (the Torah) in the inward parts of all Israelites.

It goes on to say it will no longer be necessary to tell anyone about God, since all will know. The only thing that will be taken away from the old covenant are the physical punishments for breaking the laws. Since people will sin no more, and they will be forgiven.

Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

The New Covenant remains unfulfilled, as the above conditions have not been met.

It’s important to include verse 31 and 32 to get a clear understanding.

Jeremiah 31:31-33 “Look! There are days coming,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “and I will conclude with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah a new covenant; not one like the covenant that I concluded with their forefathers in the day of my taking hold of their hand to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt, ‘which covenant of mine they themselves broke, although I myself had husbandly ownership of them,’ is the utterance of Jehovah. “For this is the covenant that I shall conclude with the house of Israel after those days,” is the utterance of Jehovah. “I will put my law within them, and in their heart I shall write it. And I will become their God, and they themselves will become my people.”

When someone breaks a covenant or contract the contracter has the option to cancel.  God took this option when he made a new one.

However, the Law covenant became in a sense “obsolete” when God announced by means of the prophet Jeremiah that there would be a new covenant. (Jer 31:31-34) Heb 8:13 "In his saying “a new [covenant]” he has made the former one obsolete. Now that which is made obsolete and growing old is near to vanishing away". When something vanishes away it is gone.

In 33 C.E. the Law covenant was canceled on the basis of Christ’s death on the torture stake. Colossians 2:13-14 “Furthermore, though YOU were dead in YOUR trespasses and in the uncircumcised state of YOUR flesh, [God] made YOU alive together with him. He kindly forgave us all our trespasses and blotted out the handwritten document against us, which consisted of decrees and which was in opposition to us; and He has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the torture stake". The new covenant replacing it. Heb 7:12; 9:15; Ac 2:1-4.

John 8: 31 To the Jews who had believed him Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

If you do as Jesus instructed... the truth will set you free!

33 They answered him," We are Abrahams descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 Jesus replied," I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed."

I am free!!!!

Romans 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin, and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The old law was negative in nature. Don't do this and don't do that. We were constantly doing that which we were told not to do.

But the Son, brought light. The darkness within our souls was filled with the LOVE of God. We no longer dwell in darkness. We do not carry the dread from the laws that were placed upon us. Instead we rejoice in the LOVE of God and pass that LOVE to all mankind.

Praise God!!!!!

Jesus fulfilled the Old Law, then He gave us 2 New Commands (Love God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbour as you love yourself), which cover the Old Law (if you love God you will worship only Him, and if you love your nighbour you will not murder them, etc).

Those commands aren't new.

Deu 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

Lev 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I [am] the LORD

The Law remains unfulfilled since the conditions of the New Covenant haven't been met.

Jeremiah doesn't say the old law will become obsolete. He sais the law will be written in the "inward parts" so that all will know. That is how the law will be fulfilled.

The law will be within them, there will no longer be any need to teach about God, for all will know, the new covenant is for house Israel and House Judah (there was no House Israel in the first century, House Israel is lost in diaspora). Further all their sins will be forgiven and forgotten.

It is clear to see that none of these new covenant conditions have been fulfilled.
