VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican's second-highest ranking doctrinal official on Monday forcefully branded homosexual marriage an evil and denounced abortion and euthanasia as forms of "terrorism with a human face." . . .

In an address to chaplains, Amato said newspapers and television bulletins often seemed like "a perverse film about evil." He denounced "evils that remain almost invisible" because the media presented them as "expression of human progress." . . .

First of all, I think they're flat out wrong about gay marriage.

Secondly, though I agree with much of the pro-life stance, the Vatican has little credibility with me.

Their opposition to measures that would lessen the need to abortion (such as contraception and comprehensive sex education) coupled with strident language such as this leads me to believe that they are more interested in exerting control and authority than in helping reduce the number of abortions.

Isn't this the same Vatican that just decided that there is no such thing as limbo, even though they had been preaching that there was for thousands of years? Yeah, forgive me if I don't trust them as a valid source when they can't even keep their stories straight.

That gays don't get a catholic marriage is obvious, but the Vatican should kbe silent about non catholic marriages. I doubt gays would want to have one anyway.
That the Vatican objects to abortion must be because a saint was against it. Jesus and god never mention it, so it probably wasn't that important.

If gay people are going to be sexually active, I think that it is better for them emotionally and psychologically, and better for society as a whole, if they are sexually active within a mutually supportive monogamous relationship.

While abstinence may be preferable, it is through loving relationships with others that we grow and learn about the character of God.

In short, promiscuity is much, much more of an abomination than loving committed relationships. I don't know whether the Vatican official's words were helpful as much as they were confrontational.

I also don't think it is helpful to equate abortion or euthanasia with terrorism. Most surveys show that a majority of Americans are either opposed to all abortions or would like to see greater restrictions placed on them.

Isn't that what we want--for pro-life to be a mainstream issue that has widespread support? And if that's the case, we need to reach the moderates.

I don't think that moderates react to that kind of rhetoric--instead of garnering support, I think it alienates them by making pro-life an issue for extremists.

I don't know much about Italian politics--but I don't think that the speech would have changed a single American legislator's mind about gay rights or abortion.

being from a state where 2/3 of this is pseudo-legal and disagreeing with it, I too could write an honest reply but remain civil.
Honest question: why do you even continue to live in Massachusetts if you disagree with the way this state is run?
