Yes there is a difference except the NT makes it clear the latter is the case.

No, it really doesn't. The NT consistently fails to make that clear, starting with Jesus, who rejects the notion out of hand.

The subsequent question is what does it mean to believe in Jesus.

And what it means, in the sense that Jesus talked about it, has NOTHING to do with "belief in Jesus" of the form people talk about today.

We stand in the fast lane singing songs about how certain we are that the guy who told us to get out of traffic was a real traffic cop. Such "belief" isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Nice line. :)

Remember, to those who think belief is of the utmost importance: Lucifer believes Jesus is the Son of God, and only those who go through him achieve the Father....

FAITH, as an other-worldly gift of perception,
comes with many questions:
the arts of true question asking skills:
the battle of the unseen forces of the universe
intelligence of the Spirit: power and innocence of the Spirit
VS
the dark forces of evil...

Perception, and apperception, through the Spirit has a mirrored shield:
a double-edged Sword of the Spirit:
spiritual self-awareness, spirtual perception:
the seeing eye; the hearing ear---
only the Lord has made these things for us.

This power of invisibility IS the Sword of the Spirit:

King of Qin:

I have just come to this realization!
This scroll by Broken Sword contains no secrets of his swordsmanship.
What this reveals is his highest ideal.
"In the first state, man and sword becomes one and each other.
Here, even a blade of grass can be used as a lethal weapon.
In the next state, the sword resides not in the hand, but in the heart.
Even without a weapon. the warrior can slay the enemy
from a hundred places.
But the ultimate ideal is when the sword disappears altogether.
The warrior embraces all around him.
The desire to kill no longer exists.
Only peace remains."

.....

"Because Thy Steadfast Love is better than life, my lips will praise Thee..."

Psalm 63:3 RSV

What else can we do?

Who is sufficient for these things?
