more advice i could give SOFTB is, why not just simply call yourself a human being?

i don't know about anyone else but my religious convictions never took away my humanity, so if one needs a classification, why not state the obvious?

while i'm not ashamed to say i'm a "Christian" anymore, i'd rather define myself as what i am without the Christian convictions or with the Christian convictions and that is a human being, and let anyone who is actually interested in what i view with religion and such to seek it out themselves if they really care to hear what i view on such things.

I don't really have any wise advice for you, because I've been feeling the same way lately. And it's hard because I'm the kind of person that likes to label and to be labeled and to fit in to a box, and to have it sorted out NOW so me and everybody else can just get into our boxes and go on with our lives. But I seem to be discovering that this is not really the best way to think of myself or others. Alot of the wise advice that has been given to you has rung true to me, so thank you for posting this.

The term Christian means Christ One's or Like Christ, the identity of a Christian is one is belongs to Jesus.

If all anyone can see by the term Christian is the negitive things that come from lousy so called Christians then I can understand why you dislike the label.

Personally I love being called a Christian, for me it means that I identify with Jesus and try to love and live and serve from his example. It also means that I identify with the thousands of good things Christians have done in this world. Abolishing slavery, fighting rascism, founding homes for orphans, thousands of ministrys to help the homeless and underpriviledged, elderly etc.

Jesus said that if we are ashamed to be called by His name before men He will not acknowlege us before God.

Ok so I've been struggling with something and I wasn't sure where else to put it, so I figured I could post it here and be safe.

I'm not sure I can call myself a Christian anymore. Why? Because although I love Jesus with all my heart and soul, I cannot be associated with a group of people I so deeply disagree with and to the most part, find sickening.

How can I claim I'm a Christian, when most Christians I know are so un christ-like? How in good conscience can I do that??? How can I call myself one of them, whey the majority of "them" feel it's ok to alienate a whole group of people?? How can I be one of them when I feel the whole foundation of what is believed, is beyond screwed up???

Don't get me wrong. I. LOVE. JESUS. I think who Jesus is- the Jesus of the Bible- the one who healed the sick and helped the poor and befriended the outcasts--- not the one that main stream Christians have made up in their mind. One who would shun a gay person, or who would only bless you based on the amount of money you give to your church.

:sigh:

See how conflicted I am??? How do I go about dealing with this?? How can I be a lover of Jesus, without carrying the "title"? How can I tell people I follow Jesus, without all the negative connotations that seem to go along with that??
It doesn't matter if you are called a christian or not.

What matters is that you love and serve Jesus. That's it. Jesus is all that matters, not religion.

I feel the same way as you.
Why call myself a Christian when a lot of "christians" are such horrible people?

I thought about it really. From what I've heard, Christian means "Christ-Like." No one is Christ-Like. Everyone is a sinner who has fallen short, and the only way to be like Christ is for Christ to be Himself through us. No one is Christ-Like, especially not me. So why call myself Christ-Like? Why give myself such an arrogant title that is associated with such a prideful and sick people who are just like the rest of the world; full of hate and guile?

No, I'm not Christ-Like. I'm not a "christian". I'm a heathen who fell down before the Lord and Creator of the Universe, accepted Him as my Savior, and began to know Him as my greatest and closest Friend and Lover.

Not a christian, just a heathen who loves Jesus with all of his heart and serves him with all of his being.

Sure you're still fit to wear the badge. Heck, I'm sure that Jesus Himself was (and still is) annoyed by un-Christ-like "Christians." All that matters to Him is that you love Him, and that you try to be as much like Him as possible. Everything else is just details. Good luck in your spiritual journey, and God bless.

My thought on this is:

The greatest evil I see in Christians is the tendency to condemn others as unfit, or unworthy, and thus to refuse to associate with them.

If, in response to this, I decide that I don't want to be associated with them, how am I improving things?

If you see a problem in Christian practice (and I think, these days, most people do), then one good solution might be to dive into it and start working on the problem where it is.

A further thought: There is some overlap here with the decision of many gay rights activists to actively claim the word "queer".
