Many sects of christianity believe that the wine and bread actually become the body and blood of christ through transsubstantiation. In essence we are actually physically eating christs flesh and drinking his blood during communion.

That sounds alot like cannibalism to me, at least symbolically.

What are your thoughts on this?

 Hi!
Well, I just asked my (Anglican) priest about this last Sunday and he said that our church believes in "presence" and that I do not have to believe in transubstantiation. He said it was o.k. for me to believe in transubstantiation and I do, however, I see it this way and, of course, I believe I am correct LOL :
When the wine and bread are consecrated by the priest or minister, I believe that it becomes the blood and body of Christ in that it is imbued with the Holy Spirit, the One God, the Trinity, the three persons who are one substance. It is virtually impossible for me to divide the substance of the Trinity.
Jesus himself said, I Cor. 11:"THis is my body which is for you . . ." and "This cup is the new covenant in my blood."
He said it, I believe it.
Blessing, Fortuna:hug:

Hello-

Is this along the lines of suggesting that Jesus Christ's sufferings prior to his crucifixion were justified ("By His stripes we are healed"), thus making a statement that flogging and mocking are perfectly acceptable practices, as well?

If so, my mind does not coincide with that logic. I don't see things that way. I agree with this post:

The-Doctor: "The wine and bread are symbolic IMO and done in rememberance of the last supper. I dont think Jesus wanted us to actually eat his flesh and drink his blood."

If it is just a symbol why did some people die for eating it wrongly?

As a Catholic, I think it is beautiful. Jesus said, "Do this in memory of me".

As a protestant, I don't believe in transubstantiation.

However, I don't think it's like cannibalism.

As a matter of fact I was just thinking of communion today, and what I realized is it is spiritual. And the way it is spiritual is that by taking communion in remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice for us our Spirit grows stronger simply by the remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice.

So, Catholics/Anglicans believe it is a body and blood spiritual experience, and to me as a Protestant it is a spiritual experience.

And, I got to thinking the spiritual experience therefore cannot really be that different for the denominations as they really boil down to both being spiritual experiences.

It's not cannibalism because we are receiving the living risen body of our Lord and not a dead corpus.

Heres some verses,

The DRINK... is One SPIRIT

1Cr 12:13 For by ONE SPIRIT are WE all BAPTIZED into ~ONE BODY~ (BREAD) whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all MADE TO DRINK into ~ONE SPIRIT~ (SPIRITUAL DRINK)...

We ATE and DRANK in your presence? They ALL ate the same SPIRITUAL MEAT and SPIRITUAL DRINK?

2Cor 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the COMMUNION (FELLOWSHIP) of the ~Holy Ghost~, be with you all.

1Cr 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it ~not~ the communion (FELLOWSHIP) of ~the blood~ of Christ? The BREAD which we break, is it ~not~ the COMMUNION (FELLOWSHIP) of the body of Christ?

WE are now the BODY and The BREAD

1Cr 10:17 For ~WE~ being many ~ARE~ ONE BREAD, and ONE BODY: for WE are all partakers of ~that~ ONE BREAD.

1Cr 12:27 Now YE are the body of Christ, and ~members~ in particular.

Peace

 Just like when Peter had a vision of animals (being hungry, as we are discussing) The LORD said ARISE KILL and EAT... The vision was never about FOOD but "eating with the Gentiles" as the picture later shows.

Things arent always as they first appear.

Praise God Peter didnt literally ARISE KILL and EAT those MEN sent to him huh? ^_^

Maybe its just another way of saying sitting with them and partaking of fellowship with them?

Peace
