My first post.

My first confession of my doubts about my christian faith and religion in general. 30 years as a rock-solid christian. Steadfast in my belief, nuturing to others , and a love of God's creation that surrounds us.

People say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but one picture has shaken my resolve and belief. One photograph has made me bring my faith to the question and I can't figure out why. Perhaps you can help.

In a tiny portion of our universe there are numerous galaxies with galxies beyond these. What hit me was that this is all around our own galaxy. Anywhere you look with that telescope, you will see more galaxies. This caused me to read material general materials on physics and to look at the universe as a whole. When I looked at our world with the universe in mind, I saw energy in one form or another. Everything, including the universe is energy.

That didn't cause me to be where I am now. I knew God could do as he pleased. His glorious creation was a matter of energy and it was beautiful. Then I thought a little more.

I have been taught in church that god is all around us. He is everything. His love is everything. But, I know that god can not be energy. Energy can not create itself or another form of itself. Energy doesn't have morals. God can not be energy becuase energy doesnt care about me. When I die, the energy that makes my cells live will convert to heat and other forms.

My new outlook scares me. I have no solace in it's holding, but can not rid myself of it's alluring reason. Where is God?

Hi Vge,

I am somewhat of an astronomy buff. At least I like to think I am. I recently got a 6" reflector, which is not huge, but it is better than my little refractor.

One thing I have noticed. There are some objects in the sky, that it makes no difference how high your magnification power is, they still just appear as little specks. Strange.

But somehow the picture you shared has the opposite effect on me. And when I look through my scope at some deep space object, I feel the same way. I am just filled with awe and wonder at the immence distances and sizes that we see in space.  The scripture comes to mind:

Psalms 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth the work of his hands.

Thanks Vge,

have a good one.

Your church has taught you wrong. God is not energy. God is not of this universe, nor is He an object within this universe. He is beyond our universe, and is not necessarily constructed of anything that exists in our universe. Your impression of God's being is flawed.

God is a being whose substance cannot be imagined by man.

The photo really excited me, since it shows me God's awesome infinity of creativity, not his limitations.

I'm glad this photo shook your faith, because by shaking us, He gets us to let go of our unfounded beliefs and encourages us to look for the Truth. He's allowing you to be shaken to make you free!

Can I make a suggestion. Read Job chapters 38-42. being christian so long, no doubt you are familar with it. Still it might be worth , prayerfully reading it. This, to me, is the greatest affirmation of God's awesome creative power and love.

I will also pray for you.

2Co. 5:7 We live by faith, not by sight.

agree, BigEd, it's a beautiful picture, just shows how creative God is. :)
Van Gough's ear, at least that is how i look at it. God is always with us, and in us, and yeah, energy doesn't have morality, so doesn't that say the opposite for God?

*praying*

by the way, Welcome to Christian forums!!
