Does anyone have any "insight" into the mystery person of this 1973 smash hit? (The fact that the song became such a huge hit is humorous in itself.)

There is a very interesting article on the song in Wikipedia. (Search on the artist or song.) It narrows it down to three highly possible candidates. Personally, I've always thought that Warren Beatty was the most likely suspect (the other two being Mick Jagger and James Taylor). I'm not sure why. He just seems to be more vain. More evil.

The article also contains a funny sidestory about an entertainment producer who "bought" the solution to the mystery at an auction. Did he reveal the secret? Well, you'll have to read the article to find out. :)

Beatty is almost as famous for his love life as he is for his movie-making, having been connected with a galaxy of beautiful starlets, a who's who list reported to include...Carly Simon (who is rumored to have written "You're so Vain" about him) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000886/bio Ray :)

I'll have to go with Warren Beatty.

James Taylor isn't the "jet-set" type who flies around in private jets and hangs out with the super-rich. He was pretty much your basic hippie type back in the 60's and 70's, popular on college campuses for both his music and liberal political views.
