Does anyone know any good suggestions on how to get rid of lice?
I've tried the lice shampoos and gels and everything.. I've washed clothes on a daily basis, jackets included, as well as all the bedding, and vacuuming...
We just can't seem to get rid of this. It's going on for about 2 months now...
What can we do? Its really driving me crazy.. I know we aren't dirty people, we just can't seem to get rid of it..
We've even gone to the extreme and used vegitable oil in our girls hair, and that seemed to have worked, but it just came back...
I even boil the brushes every day, or after every use rather.. And its getting really expensive to have to buy new pony tails every so often..
I've even cut the girls hair to right above the shoulder hoping that will help..
Any other suggestions would be great!!!

Systematically comb with a good nit comb at least twice a week.
It seems we have been doing that, at least twice a week.. I just dont get it.. I've never even heard of it being this bad before :help:
I bought a couple different nit combs and they seemed to work alot better than the one you get when you buy the kit itself, but man does it ever end!

Thanks for your tip!

I swam everyday as a child, I was on a swim team, and the clorine keep them off of me, but my twin who I shared a bed with got them alot. My mom used lots of conditioner in our hair and that seemed to work fairly well, but that was only after all the nits were gone, it gives the louse nothing to stick her eggs to, cause they will just slid off the hair.

When my daughter got them, the only way we got rid of them is by a prescription her pedi gave us. He say that lice are becoming immune to the over-the-counter stuff. Shen he gave us this stuff (can't remember the name) it was gone immediately after treatment!

I used a mayonaise/tea tree oil/salt/olive oil mixture on the hair (put a shower cap on and keep it on a couple of hours). Do this every time you see live bugs. If you do it within 2 days of hatching, they can't lay more eggs.
This got rid of them in 1 week for us.

Also, put anything you can through the dryer. The heat is supposed to kill them, too!

I can relate. We went through it on and off for a full year. Finally I think we got rid of it really because she was no longer in class with this one boy. She would tell me about the boy with bugs crawling on his hair and they would fall off on the desk. I kept telling her to stop messing with the bugs. Anyways. I was told and did the combing, you need a good lice comb, closer the teeth are the better. I would comb thru once dip the comb in hot water to kill the lice and comb again. I went through hair twice each sitting. GOOD LUCK!!

same problem with our daughter. We tried all the chemical stuff but didn't work. Got some natural stuff which is a type of oil with peppermint, rosemary and other stuff in it, worked because it made it really difficult for the bugs to stay on and they didn't like the smell, but my daughters hair smelled great.

Increase your garlic intake a LOT and also use Extra strength denorex and get a bottle of tea tree oil. We battled lice for 9mths and this is what finally got rid of them(along with the combing)
Oh my gosh.. dont tell me it was 9 months straight!
What's denorex? and what do I do with the tea oil.. I'll do anything at this point..
Thanks for your tips too :)

I heard that they could get immune to over the counter too if you use it too much. I thought about calling a pediatrician too, I just have to find one out here.

So alot of conditioner will work? The problem with that is I have to get rid of the nits first.. and the nit gel isn't working as of yet. Well I mean it is working, but then it just comes back for some reason.

I used a mayonaise/tea tree oil/salt/olive oil mixture on the hair (put a shower cap on and keep it on a couple of hours). Do this every time you see live bugs. If you do it within 2 days of hatching, they can't lay more eggs.

My sister in law tried the mayonaise and I tried vegitable oil on over night, and that seemed to work good, but it was so messy....
I put most everything in the dryer.. if it can't be washed like toys then they are in plastic bags for at least 2 weeks, longer at the moment.

Your daughters are probably being reinfested by someone they know. The knack for helping them not catch them in the first place is tying their hair up but I even went to the extreme of making my kid wear a bandana & that really helped.
Their hair was put in a ponytail everyday.. I told them not to let other kids touch their hair as mean as that sounds, but now its too short for pony tails..

Mayo is very messy. . . but if you put shampoo in your hair before wetting it when you're ready to wash it out, the shampoo bonds with the oils and helps it come out better/faster.

You put in 1 cup mayo, 1/2 cup salt, 3 tsp. oil and some 8 drops (I think) of TTO.

Maybe I can try that too.. there are so many different things I can try, I dont know where to start.

EWW.. They should have pulled that boy out of school.
Yes, I believe I got a better lice comb.. it was actually a combonation(?) of a lice comb and a nit comb with a magnifier..
I've redone their hair with the lice shampoo and haven't seen any movement, I just see nits..
And I've been told if they are more than 1/4 inch away from the scalp then they are dead..

Now is this just for lice.. or would it work on the nits and eggs too?
I think the main reason it was so messy last time because we didnt have any shower caps.. so we just had to use plastic bags and rig them like shower caps.

They do not work on nits/eggs. You do this within 48 hours of seeing live bugs (this is before they can lay eggs) and kill them off systematically. We did this for 1 week (3-4 treatments) and got rid of them. I also put everything through the dryer and (if I felt it necessary) even vacuumed the mattress after I'd taken the sheets off.

Here are some good sites on lice life cycles:
http://dermatology.about.com/cs/headlice/a/headlice.htm
http://www.ridlice.com/life_cycle.shtml
http://pediatrics.about.com/od/headlice/ig/Head-Lice-Pictures/Head-Lice-Life-Cycle-Stages.htm

These sites make it clear that, after hatching, it takes at least 7 days for a louse to become an adult. Thus, using any treatment that kills "live bugs" within 48 hours of seeing them will kill off the infestation (as long as it's not continually renewed). The problem with the chemical shampoos is that they are unsafe to use that often, most saying use no more than once per week, which allows some of these bugs to lay eggs in between time.

whatever method you use you still have to go through systematically and take them out which is the time consuming part. Also you can buy anti lice shampoos that make the less likely the lice will want to go onto the hair in the first place. My aunty reckons to use anti dandruff shampoo does the same thing.
