I say that I don't believe that.

I have heard Word Faith teachers say that if you even say the word "death," you will bring death and if you say the word "life" you will bring life and blessing, and so on. . . an entire "doctrine" eisegeted from that verse in Proverbs that says "death and life are in the power of the tongue."

I myself believe that such a practice (of attempting to "remake" one's situation via decrees, rebukes, and taboo of "negative" speech) is dangerously close to tribal magic.

Maybe I'm wrong and too skeptical, but I want to know what all of you here think about this. . . :)

NOTE TO MODS: If any *flames* break out, PLEASE close this thread at once. I do not mean it to flame, just to state my point of view and see what others have to say. :sorry:

Sounds like magic and superstition to me. :(

Death and life ARE in the power of the tongue, but not in the sense of uttering an incantation and making magic happen. That verse means that people have to watch what they say, because harsh words can kill a person's spirit, but kind words can nurture and fertilize a person's spirit.

Like this: Suppose your child came to you and said, "Mommy, I broke the window." And you said, "Why you little idiot! What the &%$# did you do that for! You wreck everything! I wish you were never born!" You have killed that child's spirit, their self-esteem, and you have killed the love they felt for you. The power of death is in the tongue.

But suppose you said, "Oh! I wish you had been more careful! Are you okay? I'm mad that you broke the window, but I still love you and always will. Let's go see what happened." You have nurtured your child's spirit by being kind and affirming that you will always love them. The relationship is more secure and the love is secure, too. The power of life is in the tongue.

See?

Consider this for a moment.

Mar 11:
23 Verily I say to you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou taken away and cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but believe that what he says takes place, whatever he shall say shall come to pass for him.

In light of what this says:
1. Do you believe something in you heart? Anything. It does not matter what.
2. Have you ever said this thing that you believe in #1?

If you have believed something in your heart, and if you did say it (in accordance with this verse)... then what did Jesus say would happen?

I will leave the answer up to you, your courage, and your faith to work out.

Peace

A little balance, perhaps ...

(James 4:2-4) You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. (3) When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (4) You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

love in Christ,

De 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

We're asked to choose.

Pr 18:21 -- Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

self-explanatory.

1Pe 3:10 -- For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

If you want to love life and have many good days, the choice is yours -- refrain your tongue from speaking evil.

note: evil here doesnt just mean cursing -- it can also mean an "evil report" as in talking unbelief. eg the 10 spies talk of doubt/unbelief -- they died in the wilderness.

why is the tongue so important? we're made in God's image. He spoke things into existence. he didnt keep quite and think it or hope it into existence. He called that which was not as though it were. that's jut something about saying it.

and of course, Mark 11:22 which hobie already covered nicely. notice how many times the word "say" appears.

so, I wldnt call God's word superstition and magic.

We are created in God's image, but we are not divine. He is infinite, we are finite. Our words don't have some magical God-like power. I say a good attitude and choice of positive speech is a good thing. But it has no transcendant power. Only God, Christ have the power of divine imperative, or divine fiat. God can command worlds into existence and the dead into life.
Some teachers go as far as to say we can speak empty parking spaces into existence. That's utterly ridiculous from my standpoint. I watched Jesse Duplantis a couple of weeks ago. He said that it's no surprise Martin Luther King Jr. died b/c a week before his assasination he told his followers he might not make it to the end with them. That's ridiculous, and it has no place in a pulpit as far as I'm concerned.
My opinion is this...I can name and claim, blab and grab whatever I want. God is still sovereign. I can claim a million dollars for the next ten years but that won't make me a millionaire. Only the sovereign grace of the almighty God can do that.
I repeat again that there is no proof in scripture that our nature is divine. The teaching of saints as little gods is very far out there. We are the children of God, with many rights and privelages, but speaking things into existence, I don't think so. I think we should focus on God's providence in our lives and not our own power. God has all the power, we can only pray for His mercy and providence.

Soli Deo gloria!

"We are created in God's image, but we are not divine."

hold your horses, no body's claiming that Christians are divine - ie God with a capital G.

"Our words don't have some magical God-like power."

Pr 18:21 -- Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

also, wldnt you say God's words are powerful. ie when we speak his words/scriptures over our circumstances, they are powerful. and we have to speak it ourselves, cos God aint coming down to speak it out for you.

"I can claim a million dollars for the next ten years but that won't make me a millionaire."

that's becos you dont believe it can happen. there's no faith there. Jesus said: "Whoever shall SAY to this mountain...AND SHALL NOT DOUBT IN HIS HEART...that what he says will happen..... Whatsover ye desire, when ye pray, BELEIVE THAT YE RECEIVE ... and ye shall have them." you simply cant belive, perhaps your faith is not at the million dollar level (maybe $1,000) or perhaps you know its out of a wrong motive -- ie you cant believe rightly.

of cse, we dont go around asking God for a million just so we can enjoy life. But you might ask and believe God for it cos you need to build a church for a huge congregation, build theological colleges, buy some planes for missionary work (to fly into the jungle areas), etc.
