When I was in high school, my Dad told me that my room looked like an airfield. I had model planes on the dresser...on all the window sills...on a footlocker...around the back edges of my desk...hanging from the ceiling...

I especially loved models of WW2 Navy planes...you could fold the wings and store more of them on a shelf!!

When I left home I didn't have time or space to build any more. Lately I've been buying some kits...bought an airbrush...now if I could only make the time!! I've got a 1/300 scale Fletcher-class destroyer to build (my Dad served on the USS Ingersoll, a Fletcher-class, in the '60s); I've got a Cessna Skymaster I want to build as a CDF fire-spotter plane; I've got a few WW2 fighters; they're all sitting on a shelf in the garage, patiently waiting for me to make some time for them!!

My son began learning ALL about cars when he was 4 yrs. old. I don't know why I waited so long - but when he was 12 I bought him an EASY car model kit. Boy did my pocket book change - I can't begin to tell you the models I have bought - it is an easy 200 or more. It was like I could not buy enough to keep him busy. He even loves to have duplicates of cars he put together. He has a fair size room upstairs that is totally dedicated to his model car hobby. He has about 50 unopened models in the upstairs hallway that he might someday start working on again. He enter a contest once at a hobby shop & won 2nd place for his group. He has even displayed his models at the library, etc. He used to be consumed with models until he started to go to the real thing - auto body shop repair! He still loves his models & has them all over the living room on display as well. YES - HE'S SPOILED - in that respect - but I'd much rather him be into modeling than some of the other awful things young people sometimes get themselves into.

I remember being "into" model cars when I was younger. I built quite a few actually. I loved the smell of the paint and the glue and everything about building models. Don't worry, I didn't sniff the stuff...you know what I mean. HAHA. Anyway, I would like to get my son into it now. He's seven and I think it would be a nice way to bond with him and show him how to paint and build. Hmmmm.... I think cars he would like.

I know what you mean about liking the smell of paint and glue. My dad built models with me when I was little. Mine always had fingerprints on the windshield, but I didn't really care about the model building itself. So yeah.. execellent way to bond... even with daughters. :)

Of course since then I have bought a couple.. just to get through a dull weekend. My husband says he might do one with me some time, but he is more of a gamer. My fav one was a Prowler.

I actually opened this thread 'cause I like to paint figure models.. of like cartoon/anime characters. Maybe I'm the only one.

One thing that my first flight instructor told me was that as you grow up your hobbies never change... they just get more expensive. I went from plastic models, to flying models, and now real airplanes. Considering I'm only 23 right now, my bank account is in some serious trouble.

A guy I work with was really into Tank models. He was into it so much he used real dirt in various places on the tank to make it look authentic. He brought one into work one day and my chin dropped! Amazing. He had a lot of time on his hands for sure. You would have to see it to appreciate the detail he gave his models. I don't know if I could have that much patience any more. LOL

Hi,
I build ship models from scratch, scaled and non-scaled. My name is Den, my hobby of building ships has been around 16 years. It started from a simple interest of model ship building but has grown into a love of building these ships, as has my skills over the years. I really enjoy seeing other peoples craftsmanship on web-sites, which made me want my own website. My hobby has turned into making and selling my ships.
Thanks,
DENS MODEL SHIPS
