I remember a long time ago I was asking this same question on other forums. In my musical travels, there have been many discoveries... I will attempt to give you some ideas that I was given!

First, please seek out Mahler's Symphony No. 5, Movement I. This is a Funeral March (Trauermarsch) and while it is grand-sounding, it is very sad.

The Adagio from Aram Khachaturian's "Gayane" Ballet is very moving and sad, as well. You mention the Moonlight Sonata, but much of "Pathetique", by Beethoven is quite sad as well. Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony, also named "Pathetique", is my favourite sad piece ever made, especially the fourth movement. If you want slow and sad, go to Tchaikovsky's 6th!

Erik Satie's "Trois Gymnopedie" and Claude Debussy's "Claire De Lune" are beautiful and sad piano pieces. Someone mentioned Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto; I also recommend this, definitely the first movement anyway!

Oh I was just thinking of Spartacus' Adagio! Sad and beautiful.

One note on Adagio (Katchaturian) from Spartacus; did you know there is a movie featuring that music called Mayerling starring Omar Sharif? It is true story about a nobleman who falls in love with a lower class girl. Moving!

Someone on youtube.com commented on Shostakovich's 8th symp as music from Tim Burton, the mind behind Edward Scissorshands, Nightmare before Christmas, etc.! Interesting music to say the least.

Some fine suggestions. A few more:

Tchaikovsky symphony no 6, first and last movements. Probably my first choice.

Beethoven: maybe the penultimate piano sonata op 110.
Some of the later Diabelli variations, variation 31 particularly.

Bach, preludes no 8 in E flat minor and no 22 in B flat minor.

Mozart, piano concerto no 23, adagio

Well, this one is actually Boroque, but Komm, Susser Tod - or "Comest Sweet Death" by Bach and played by and arranged by Virgil Fox for the pipe organ. One of the most stirring, emotional, and touching songs ever. A great organist can reach deep inside one's soul with that piece. Absolutely moving!

Myself, and some fellow organ students attended Virgil Fox's funeral in November of 1980 at the Crystal Cathedral and Ted Alan Worth, Fox's protege played that piece. Talk about supremely beautiful and heart wrenching all at once. Wow, I just get spine tingling chills everytime I think about it.
