I've been listening to quite a bit of Benny Green lately. He would probably be my favourite pianist.

I just recently heard the Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson, and the guy from The Bad Plus is pretty good too.

Keith Jarret, Ramsey Lewis, Oscar Peterson. Those three guys are incredible. End of story.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I were walking through Greenwhich Village and we passed some little bar I'd never even heard of and there was a sign written on the back of a pizza box: "2NITE: 8:00 Pinetop Perkins".

My wife isn't a fan, so she didn't know, but I ran inside and asked the guy if there were any tickets left and he said "Tickets? No, it's just a five dollar cover."

So, I asked my wife if she'd come back with me that night and we did.

There were maybe twenty of us in the place and he played like it was Carnagie Hall.

About a month later, he died.

I've got a picture of the two of us in my studio and it's one of my most prized posessions.

I saw Keith Jarret in concert in Evergreen State College in Washington State in the mid 70's. It started my love of jazz.
