Gay marriage. Are you for or against it?

Against it. I'm liberal on a lot of gay rights, but I think it would lead to a lot of other issues down the road. Taxes. Healthcare. Parenting. I think you need to draw the line somewhere in society. That's just me though....

For, in the secular plane. Don't see why there should be government restrictions on standard marital contracts between consenting adults.

*Addendum: I'm not going to try to get additional same-sex couples to come together, just that ones that want to should be permitted to marry by the government.

I'm not sure it would be that complicated. The laws are already in place, it's just a matter of applying them to one segment of society the same as they are applied to another.

There is no good reason to prohibit gay marraige

For it. They're too [staff edit] happy - they need to know the crippling depression of marriage, too!

I'm a straight guy who never really intends to get married.

And I support legal gay marriage.

For it. I see no reason to prohibit it.

For it, as I don't see any reason why not, and I can think of quite a large number of reasons why it should be allowed.

My partner and I have been married for 22 years, in the eyes of God.

We celebrate our anniversary each year on the date we first signed an apartment lease.

I do not understand why legal marriage for us presents such a problem.

For it. The only difference between gay and straight marriage is that there are 2 people of the same sex. They have the same committment, love and other bonds that make up marriage.

The only secular argument given is 'it will undermine marriage' and that is invalid for so many reasons. Firstly, that it will cannot be demonstrated at all...it is myth. Studies have been done in nations where homosexual marriage has been legal for many years (I believe it was Australia) and the decline in marriage rates remained the same after the law came into force. Secondly, we would have to ban sex outside of marriage and divorce and prohibit single parents from raising children in order to be consistent and I see no-one arguing for this.

The benefits are huge. Overcoming prejudice, giving homosexuals more dignity, protection from domestic abuse, next of kin rights, application of tax regulations applying to marriage, inheritance rights etc.

On a personal note, unless in the next 10 years the UK legalises humanist marriages, changes 'civil partnerships' to gay marriage and legalises cannabis I'm going to be forced to move to Holland, and I can't be bothered to learn Dutch.

Maar nederlands is heel erg prima!

I have to agree that there is no valid reason to deny the right of marriage to same-sex couples. Because of this I think that people who oppose marriage for same-sex couples are coming from a position of ignorance and/or hate.

marriage...civil unions...whatever you want to call it, I'm fine with it.

I'm for it. Can't think of a reason not to be, and I can think of lots of reasons to be. (I'd love to see my MIL get to marry her partner, if she wanted to.)

I'm also for ensuring that religious institutions are not required to perform same-sex marriages when they do become legal.
