Is there a possibility of habbits making a come back for nuns? I know the Poor Claires wear habbits but what about the rest of the monastics? When my husband and I were going through the Catholic tribunal to get an annulment in order to join the Catholic church, we did not realize we were dealing with a nun because she wore street clothes (then I realized her name was Sister Joseph:scratch: ) and wore absolutely nothing to indicate she was a monastic. I'm just really interested to see if the Catholic church is willing to go back to the old ways.
Thanks.

It was illegal for a nun/brother to be seen not in a habit, until vatican II this was the case, then this was reviewed and decided it wasnt the habit that made a religious person, but the person, so it was not a nececessity anymore, but in some orders it is still strong, so it comes down to the case of if they want to or not, and because some of them are so uncomfortable they choose not to...

It is freedom of each nun order.
Some order are very scrict, some less.

And there are so many diffeent oders of nuns, that it is impossible to have a clear idea

A lot of nuns and sisters still wear the habit. In fact, most of the rapidly growing communities are the ones that do.

And many have found that the "wearing of the habit" assures them of respect and even deference that those who don't wear the habit do not enjoy.

Nun's are "monastic", Sisters are not necessarly. /Most now work in the world and tend to blend in more. I would think those who are working in the Church or in a religious setting would consider looking more like Religious Sisters.

The Church has always encouaged the use of habits, even after Vatican II.

Usually, today, the orders that do not wear habits are mostly dying out, since they cannot attract new vocations.

I think that in the coming years you will see more and more nuns wearing habits.I think the habit is a beautiful sign in the community, is a outward sign of an inward reality, and must help the sister sacrifice themselves to God. The sister I lived with wore a modified habit, and people were constantly thanking her for it. Personally, if I were called to religious life I wouldn't even consider an order that didn't wear a habit.

I guess I didn't realize there were so many orders. I just can't understand why an order would want to give up wearing a habit, but I'm glad it's fading out
