Gen 3:17
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18   Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19   In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

This is why I have to work for a living. I am lazy and don't like it and I blame Adam.
Jesus defeated sin and death on the cross, but still we are cursed.
Why?

Peacebestill,

God created man with work for him in mind. that's why Adam was told to tend the garden. but such work was not cursed in the sense that Adam wld enjoy it with no "sweat and hardship."

The sweat and hardship part came in after he sinned. tats the curse, not the work itself.

Today, Christ has redeemed us from the curses. But the manifestation of any blessings dont fall automatically in your life just becos you are a Christian. You've got to know it believe it and claim it in faith.

So work we all have too. But the "sweat and strife" from work we dont have too have if we know what belongs to us.

I like this guy:

"I'll just comment on a couple of things. Throughout the Bible, the blessings always come before the curses. God blessed Adam and Eve in the garden and fully provided for them and then later the curses.

In Deuteronomy Chapter 28 there is firstly a list of blessings and then a longer list of cursings.

The blessings of God are always the result of obedience to His will and leadership. The curses are always the result of disobedience and failing to follow His leadership.

That's blessing and curses 101.

Now what I think is interesting is this.
There is a curse upon Adam & Eve and we still see the result of that today.

The Law was given much later to Moses in the book of Exodus. The Law and the requirements of the Law demonstrated to us our disobedience and the resulting curse of that (Similar to Deut 28).

Now I find it really interesting that the verses quoted by others earlier in this thread all spoke about Jesus redeeming us from the curse of the Law. This is the exodus Law. None of them speak of redemption from curses on Adam & Eve that were prior to the Law.

God promised that the seed of Eve (Jesus) would destroy the serpent (Satan) but that promise does not explicitly state that he redeems us from these first curses at the cross. The cross was the fulfillment of the Law for breaking the Law.

However the Revelation verse previously quoted speaks clearly about a heavenly redemption from curses on Adam & Eve. So as Christians I believe we walk in the blessings of God to the extent of our obedience haveing been redeemed from the Law's curse of death, but still suffering the need to work, the struggle to feed ourselves and the pains of childbirth. All of these however will be done away with in heaven, when we are fully redeemed by God.

Here endeth blessing and curse 201

Btw: A side note.. there were two special trees in the Garden. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the tree of life. After eating of the first, Adam and Eve were removed from the garden, not just to punish them, but to protect them by preventing them from eating from the tree of life. If they had, they would have had eternal life and been eternally knowledgeable of sin and evil.

Death became inevitable because only by it can we enter heaven and forever forget sin, temptation, pain, suffering, saddness to know only joy, love, health, peace and wholeness. Once there we partake of the tree of life and live eternally without the curse.

There is but one catch: because Jesus paid the price for us to be there, only those who have His abiding presence will be permitted to enter."

Andrew,
yes exaclty.

In elaboration; the closer you come to God, the less this curse affects us. When you focuss your eyes on Him, the evil of this world won't have as much of a hold on you. It can't leverage you as much as it can with other people. You will still run into some hardship, as God still needs to redirect us sometimes, but you will prevail in the end and become a much greater person because of these hardships....if you so choose. :)

I believe that biblically we can look at this for both angles.

1. We are set free.

John 8:32
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
(NAU)

Rom 8:2
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
(NAU)

God heals. We are now Children of God and many times we are blessed without having to work. Heck much sickness can be elleviated if Christians would have faith in God and claim the healing that God has for us. There are so many miracously healings in the Bible. Lazarus, Blind man in John 9, etc. that it is clear from the Bible that God does heal and tht God wants to heal. Also it is clear that God has blessings for us here on Earth that we can't fathom. Heck many that we do nothing for at all. Sometimes if we would just be obedient we would fall on more earthly blessings but many times we are not so we do not.

However...

2. Sometimes it does not work that way. I think of Paul. He definitely was a Godly man. Before heas a Christian he had a relatively safe life but after He started to do what the Lord commanded he was stoned, Shipwrecked, tortured, put into prison, etc. Did all this occur because He was no obedient? or how about The blind man in John 9

John 9:2-3
2 And His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?"
3 Jesus answered, "{It was} neither {that} this man sinned, nor his parents; but {it was} so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
(NAU)

So it is no always because of disobedience that we do not have wealth, health and that we do not have to work. Many times sufferring in this worldis for the glory of God. Now God did not cause it to occur but He did in His sovereign will allow it to occur. He uses everything for His glory. (rom. 8:28) We know that Jesus got hungry and thisty and experienced emotional pain on Earth. He was totured and killed. I do not know how we can expect not to endure some pain and work if we want to share in Jesus' sufferring. (Phil. 3)

So in conclusion I believe that sufferring and work in this world is not always a sign of sin or disobedience or a lack of faith but it is not always just God allowing it to occur so that He can gain more glory. It is sometimes either of the two. And maybe a combination of both. I feel that we get in trouble when we say that God has to act this certain way.  True God is always just and loving and such but in the particular God's ways go beyond ours so to say God has to do it this way is going way to far in my opinion.  God will do it the way He wants to do it.

1 Cor 12:11
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
(NAU)

I believe that we must pray continually and get our inward life in order by giving it over to God in complete submission. Then we will be able to discern why things occur the way they do many times and if not we can have faith that God is in control and that it is all for His glory.

**note** I just got finished reading a book that had two chapters dealing with this subject.  It is called a Sacred Quest. By Doug Bannister.  He is an Evangelical Free Church pastor who has embraced some Charimatic teachings.  In this an another book.  The Word and Power Church he displays how both the evangelical and Charismatic traditions are in many ways correct and how we need to come together and learn from each other. I say this because I undoubtedly this book was on my mind a lot while wrinting this post.  ****

The Bible tells us to seek ye first, the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and He shall provide for all we need. Paul advises us that if we have the opportunity to work with our hands, than do so heartly as onto the Lord, so we have something to help others with. All we do, say or think, should honor God and glorify Him. Jesus went about doing good and helping others. He always honored the Father.

God gives us a choice: life or death, blessing or curse, sickness or health. He encourages us to choose life, blessing and health.

According to scripture , the curse that you speak of was removed after the Flood of Noah’s day.

No'ah. Heb., No'ach, probably, Rest; Consolation

Lamech spoke of the need for relief “from the pain of our hands resulting from the ground which God has cursed.” (Gen. 5:29) Lamech prophesied that relief from that curse would come in the days of Noah, and it did. How relieved Noah and his family must have felt after the Flood as they came out of the ark onto a cleansed earth! How comforting to find that the curse on the ground had been lifted, making agricultural activity so much easier! Indeed, Lamech’s prophecy proved true, and Noah lived up to the meaning of his name. Genesis 8:21.
