• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Demonic possession vs. demonic attack

This is an extension of the following thread:

http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19519

I believe that Christians can suffer demonic attack, but not demonic possession.

Consider Job:

Job 1:1
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.

Job 1:6-12
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 And the Lord said to Satan, "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the Lord and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it." 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?" 9 So Satan answered the Lord and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!" 12 And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Now this will b a topic 4 discussion...........

R u familiar with the story of anninias and saphira? What do u think drew them to try and ecieve the people of GOD, acts 5:1-10. who by the way they were apart of. What about paul's thorn in the flesh? 2 corinthians 12:7-10 Furher more we all know that believers can b filled with anger, rage, lust, envy, and even jealousy. We can lie, steal, b unkind 2 othersand we even abuse our childrenn now do u think that this normal. When we give place to the devil it's a way of us giving over the control we give to GOD to the devil..**WE is just used to make the statement personal as not 4 it 2 b distant.**

I still think I wasnt just being attacked.. (see other thread) I mean I am tempted and attacked (spiritual warfare) every day especially when I am doing work for God that the devil doesnt want me to do... but this was an actual posession.. yet I was full of the spirit at the time.. the thing was in me. that was very clear from the picture I was given and it was living inside attached to me... it even had names like the demons posessing legion in the bible story... I think things are a little more complicated than we think sometimes...

I think it all depends on your definition of posession....do you mean you are owned and controlled by the demon? well no! if you belong to christ the evil one cant own you... but he can create strongholds inside you and squat. he is even given legal rights if you havent renounced the problem he is plaguing you over... it moves from temptation into a whole different region then... I think a christian can posess a demon but a demon cannot posess a christian if you know what I mean.

attack for me means something different it is external not internal.. causing problems in your life to slow you down in your ministry...

Do u honestly think the powerful drive behind greed is human and not demonic? What about rage? have u ever exprienced it of known of any christians close to u that have experienced it? Do u think that it's a mere human reaction? What about godly people who molest children? Is that just them giving in to themselves?

I agree that one born again of God's Spirit, a Christian can come under demonic attack but can not be possessed. I do not beleive that the Holy Spirit and a demonic spirit can co-exist within the believer.

As Christians we wrestle with sin, Satan, the World and the flesh.

I believe much of our wrestling is with the corrupt nature of our flesh.

The continual battle of Spirit and flesh that Paul speaks of in Romans.

Praise be to God for the power and the work of the Holy Spirit in our daily walk with God.

Rose,

The human sin nature is more powerful than any demon. I think the demon possession thing is a cop out and takes the responsibility off of the sinner and puts it on some outside force. Here is a great example...

Jimmy Swaggart. here is a man who preached against everything that was wrong. He struggled with the same sin nature that everybody has to deal with but he gave in and went all the way. He went to the low of wanting to have sex with the prostitutes daughter he was seeing. He then would not submit to the counsel of the Assemblies Of God. He went off on his own and now his name is synonimous with corruption. He later went to Oral Roberts who saw the demon in him and cast it out. You see...it wasnt Jimmy doing all the bad stuff. It was a demon in him making him do it. HOGWASH! He was full of lust and couldnt deal with it. He needed help and when it was offered on something besides his terms he refused. Then he blamed it on the devil. The truth of the matter is Jimmy Swaggart SINNED. He did it. Was he under attack. I am sure he was. Did the devil make him do it. No. He did it because thats what he wanted to do.

Did the devil possess Adam and Eve to make them sin? No but he offerred the apple. they could have refused but didnt and they were punished and we are born into that same sin nature. Sin is sin. We all do it. We are all tempted at times by the adversary and our flesh. We reap what we sow.

Amen heydeerman.

May I add another note? Please do not mistake depression for a demonic attack. I did, renounced almost everything but the Bible and schoolwork out of fear of demons and/or wanting to be *happy* again, and still suffered. In fact I only got more depressed. . .I've only began to come back now because I realized that I can't blame outside forces like demons for my sad feelings.

Sad to say but the truth of the matter is that many christians o not believe te possiblity of this subject until they r face to face with it. I know of CHRISTIANS that have been demonized. Ive been present when demonds have been cast out of believers. I actually felt one rush by me when he was cast out. I've prayed for the deliverance of a demonized christian an was attacked by one of the demons that did not wnt to be cast out. I went to visit one of my good christian friends in the mental hospital and when i saw him, he looked at me and i saw a face looking at me that was over hs face. Now r u telling me that my experiences r a farse? I've stated this point b4 and i will state it again. Our GOD is omni-present(everywhere at the same time), is he not where satan is? Unless satan is where he is'nt but if that is the case then he's not omni-present at all, maybe that's a farse as well.

I agree with you that some people might claim demon possession so that they do not have to take responsibility for their actions; however, I don't think that's ALWAYS the case.

Amatire
I'm not trying to discount your story, but could you explain exactly what was happening when you felt like you were possessed?
