• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am 23 and suffer from a fast heart rate. It was discovered last year and I am on medication to help it.

Its not something that the doctors can do anything about because its just the way my heart is. A lot who suffer from fast rates are from abnormalities that can be put right.

I posting to see if there are any others that suffer similar? It doesnt seem that common in young people from what I have researched.

I did work with a great older lady who had suffered similar all her life which was really comforting. She was childfree like me so I do wonder if I ever got a desire for a child if I would be able to have one (not meant to have my medication while pregnant but wouldnt want to every risk coming off it.) Its only a hypothetical wondering anyway as PCOS keeps wanting children away too.

Hello, thank you.
I'm not taking medicine because I haven't gone back to the doctor and I haven't been referred to a cardiologist since I haven't gone back. We're busy so there isn't time for that. I know I should take medicine but I just am trying to live with it naturally.
Kait
You may need it.

My doctor says it may disappear with time as its natural and not like a lot of people get which can be fixed with a pacemaker.

Tablets have let me live a much more normal life then I had been living.

Please make sure you get refered even if its just to check all is normal.

I thought I would chime in and share my experiences. For the past 3 years I have lived with rapid heart rates, shortness of breath, headaches, etc.

Many times I have been told: its caffiene, its in your head, its just anxiety/panic attacks. I have been told this many times by DOCTORS.

Been given xanax which I never took. There are many disorders that can cause a rapid heart rate.

Its important to know what kind of tachycarida you have because some are very dangerous and can be fatal such as atrial arrhythmias. I personally have Sinus Tachycardia (its not related to sinuses but originates from the sinus node of the heart).

hyperthyroidism
pheochromocytoma
Anemia
Anxiety/panic attacks
Mitral valve prolapse

and serveral others. I have been tested for everything.

Tests that doctors may do, which you should request if you persue the cause are:

electrocardiogram
echocardiogram (very important, shows problems of the heart - its an ultra sound)
holter monitor

Electrolyte problems can cause them. Example: [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Hypokalemia

I have mitral valve prolapse. I prefer not to take drugs and have the side effects. I turned to natural remedies and take the following supplements:

300mg - Magnesium
250mg - Omega3's
50mg - Co-Enzyme Q10
150mg - L-Carntine

My 3 year old battle is almost over. I feel better, my energy level is better.

I went through 7 doctors before they found out what it was. I know more about it then those 7 doctors probably do.

I'm only 16 and have a fast heart rate and hypertension (in my case high BP is caused by vasoconstriction, not pos cardiac inotrope or increased CO).

No pheochromocytoma, hyperthyroidism, WPW/accessory pathway, electrolyte imbalance. Once in a while I will develop PSVT which lasts a short time. I've almost passed out a few times because this lead to (probably) vtach. TTE, ECG, holter all are normal.

What bugs me is that I'm young and there is no obvious cause. Probably just in my head...

Not in your head, although stress and anxiety can make almost any heart issue worse.

From what I've read people with PACs and PVCs in the absence of any heart disease can have them 20-30 or more years and have no problems with the exception of the annoyance these PAC/PVCs cause because of bad 'sensations'.

For fuzzymel, I think they put people on Beta Blockers for this issue if it causes problems (Toprol XL for instance, which is also good for folks like me with High BP).

Not in your head at all I'm sure, Jordan.

I started having problems when I was 16 with rapid heart rate and syncope. I didn't tell anyone, lived fearfully and developed panic disorder as a result. It came and went for decades. In my twenties I was blown off by several doctors and told it was my nerves. Sure I was anxious, my heart was freaking out!! Duh!

When it returned in my thirties I saw the primary, the gyno (it was happening largely during my monthly) and one cardio and a psychologist. I agreed to anti-anxiety meds just to prove them all wrong and it did. I had a bout right in the psychologist's office while also on the med and she said, 'this is not a panic attack. You are far too calm."

Thank you.

I went to another cardiologist who walked in, heard my symptoms and promptly diagnosed PSVT. I took medication and it disappeared. Until last summer. I developed hypertension and the PSVT came back, while I was in the hospital for a bad gallbladder. An angel (my current cardiologist) walked in, asked incredibly perceptive questions and said she knew what it was like to be told it is anxiety and of course it is an anxious thing to deal with.

I am now on Toprol XL and am going in today in fact to possibly add a calcium channel blocker bc I have had some breakthrough incidents.

My point in telling you all this is...don't let anyone tell you it is in your head. Be sure you have all the life-threatening causes ruled out. Then relax as much as you can and treat the symptoms. At some point you may get your answer, though it may sadly take years. But don't give up or blame it on your imagination!

In response to you having PCOS: Me and my mum have it.. She has been on a diet for the past 4 months, and incrediably her test levels have all gone within the normal ranges. We aren't sure whether it is just attirbuted to the diet, or metformin up til two month ago... But if you are interested in finding out more, I can PM information to you... I'm about to start it, and see if it works, because I'd like to sort it before having kids cos supposedly if you have it whilst girls are in the womb it can be more easily passed on to them.
