Freddie Fender, the famous Tex-Mex singer who broke racial/ethnic barriers, died last Saturday from cancer. He was 69. I enjoyed his music, especially his gigs with the Texas Tornados. The song Guacamole is one of my favorites. He was burried in San Benito, Texas, not to far from where I reside.
Freddie Fender really pathed the way for other hispanic musicians during an era when racism/bigotry was rampant. Freddie Fender was his stage name. He couldn't use his real name for fear of being blackballed by the establishment during the '50's and '60's.
