• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Coaching is iffy, I would do a lot of research before paying a coach. There are "coaches" that can be helpful, but lots are borderline fruads. Calling themselves coaches instead of therapists allows them to skirt a lot of the laws and regulations regarding training and education that exist to protect patients.

There is nothing with recieving coaching per se, but make sure it is from a qualified individual. Lots of coaches have only attended a weekend seminar and are not really qualified to deal with real problems such as ADD/ADHD.

I am in a job that requires extreme organization. When I first started, I hired a professional organizer. The cost was about $250 for 1 1/2 hours and I used her for two hours. That was expensive but I can tell you that was the BEST moeny I have ever spent. I needed the training. That training has actually transfered to my regular life. It's amazing how that has helped. I would strongly consider a service like this...based on my experience.

thanks

Did you know that you don't have to hire a professional ADD/ADHD coach? Any family member or friend who is willing makes a great coach. The CHADD website has information on this. If you need more...let me know. My husband was my coach before we were married. Spouses don't really make the best coaches.

What an interesting, helpful thread.

There are books that will put you through a 'coaching' program if you are highly motivated to change and get more structured in your life.

Cheryl Richardson has written several--"Life Makeovers," for example. She also has a radio show that I have downloaded and listened to from time to time, and a weekly message she sends.

The difference, of course, is that personalized coaching is more customized.

Richardson's site has message boards, too.

http://www.cherylrichardson.com/

Debbie Ford is another coach with a weekly internet radio show I've downloaded and listened to. She is in her fifties (more my generation) so she is a little more helpful to me.

http://www.debbieford.com/

Neither of these coaches work from a Christian perspective (on their radio shows, they almost sound a little new age at times, but I think it's because the radio station has a lot of new age shows.) Richardson doesn't sound new age at all in her books.

I haven't read any of Ford's books.

But, in any case, there is generalized help out there....

I've been thinking about getting coaching for a long time.

Mostly the cost has been prohibative. However,
when you look back at your life and see that your
going in circles...maybe it's time for a different route.

I'm 55 yrs old and it's a little late in the day for me to spend the money fighting an already lost cause.

I didn't find out I had ADD until I was 48. I felt like a moral failure. Finding out about ADD was a relief to know that I couldn't control mmost of the things I had done.

If I was younger I would do what it takes to make life easier, not just for me but the people around me.

Coaching need not be exspensive. Try to find and understanding person at your church to help you. The two of you can learn together about coaching and ADD.

Two books that I would recommed as agodd source of info are:

Healing ADD by Daniel Amen
Delivered From Distraction by Hallowell

Good books to gain insight on ADD and give you confidence. They also list other resources that can be helpful.

May God bless you and your daughter as you fight this thing.

I've seen a coach and it helped me greatly.. :) I do agree that you need to be as careful as possible.. The person I found just so happened to have Christian beliefs! :) Looking back, I think God lead me straight to him.. :)

I saw a coach and she ended up helping me to get to someone who was able to properly diagnose me with Asperber's Syndrome (they aren't sure if the ADD symptoms are separate or not though) and that changed my life... I do recomend them for those that it would be helpful for... but I agree...do your research first.
