So, I'm watching this guy on TV preaching, or what he seems to think is preaching.
He is telling everyone that God wants us all to be wealthy.
This is sickening.

He is telling the crowd that God doesn't want you to be meek when approaching Him - that God wants you to step right up and claim your due boldly - BOLDLY! He's yelling it now, and striding around.

I guess he's one of those "Word of Faith" people, preaching the prosperity gospel. It really is nauseating.

He tells us that Jesus became poor so that we can become rich. He tells us that Jesus and the Apostles had enough money to feed the thousands without the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

How in the world could anyone who has even read just a little bit of the Bible come away from it believing that Jesus wanted us all to be wealthy and will give us new cars and promotions if we will only "name it and claim it."

It is such a perversion. How ridiculous that these guys are so popular.

How in the world could anyone come to the conclusion that Jesus came to promote wealth?

He says, "Our God is not 'Ah'll Get By,' our God is 'El Shaddai - the God of More than Enough!' "

Well being a carpenter, He was able to charge excessively, just like when you call a plumber or an electrician, and have you seen how much money those fishermen can make? Especially with the kinds of catches Jesus was arranging for them ;) :p

Seriously though, it makes me feel ill too. God wants us to be rich in the virtues of humility, patience, compassion, modesty etc. and it is often necessary to deprive us of material wealth in order for us to grow in spiritual wealth. As a fellow Orthodox said in another thread: Any church which focuses on feeding the passions is suspect.

Not to be crude, but the man saying that is an idiot. Don't pay any attention to what he says -- any casual reading of the scriptures will plainly show how wrong he is, not to mention a healthy dose of 1st century Jewish culture in the Roman Empire.

It is interesting though, in the 14th century there was the opposite heresy--that Jesus and Apostles lived in absolute poverty (and thereby it was sinful for clerics to own anything). The issue boiled down to the question of whether or not Jesus and the Apostles actually owned the clothes they were wearing. Pope John XXII gave the final ruling that they did. It seems like a petty question, but there heretics were actually going around destroying property and killing priests over it

He couldn't afford to pay his staff though

Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources. (Lk 8:1-3)

I cringe seeing all the people being pulled into this stuff. the "New Fad" of Christianity...not to mention all the emotional trama these people suffer when they don't get what they pray for:doh: because they are not faithful enough, are in a sinful state, etc......

Instantly comes to mind......the rich man asking Jesus, how to get to heaven....Christ replying that he needs to give up all that he he owns.........the rich man walked away...... Prosperity Gospel is bunk:sick:

That's exactly what I'm saying - the only way you can follow this Word of Faith craziness is if you are very careful to only read, in isolation, the verses which your very loud pastor tells you to.
It is so painfully obvious that Christ didn't teach anything at all even similar to a "Gospel of Prosperity."
Or maybe it is really really easy these days for camels to pass through the eyes of needles...

My mother just ranted about this very thing! She is tired of hearing all the stuff about how we should expect abundance here on earth. That is not what I was taught. This is why it is easy for me to deal with being poor.
