Recently i bought myself a few vinyls and a record player, and im surprised, the sound quality is a lot better, and the music has got a tonal warmth to it, compared to a cd, which seems to be sharper in sound, but also not got as much tonal characteristics to it

I am now a vinyl fan :)

Anyone else enjoy music from vinyls?

Also i read somewhere that when music is recorded onto vinyls, its analogue and contain all frequencies, so no quality is lost, where as on a CD, not all the frequencies are recorded, so there is quality loss.

This probably explains why a lot of old school bands still release stuff on vinyls as well like Iron Maiden.

Vinyls is the way to go! They're a bit more expensive sometimes, but most of the times you find them cheaper than CD's.
Cd's basically sound "shiner", kinda like whiny, I guess. I don't know. You have to listen to both to see the difference.

I like a belt drive turntablefor listening, and direct drive for when I DJ and/or sample.

I've just begun to delve into the world of vinyl collecting. I have to say, every classic album that I've picked up on vinyl, I enjoy much better in that format rather than listening to the cd. There are certain albums that were meant to be heard on vinyl.

What? People STILL use record players? Come on..those are so old...its 2006 now, not 1906. Get with the times, people.
If they're so old then why artists keep releasing vinyls? In case you didn't know, even g-unot releases vinyls. Besides, it's not hip-hip if you don't dig the crates.

Well, purists prefer belt drive because the motor doesn't affect the sound. But their startup speed is slow, which is not good for DJ'ing. Direct drive is a motor right underneath the platter and might affect the quality of the sound.

Vinyls were actually widely used between 1880 - 1991 (Until Cd's became mass produced) The cd was invented in 1983

Records have a much better sound quality if the record is in good condition.

Vinyls are regularly released, DJ's use vinyls quite a bit, in clubs too.

Shows how much u know...

How often should i change the needle thing, it's like fixed to a cartridgy type thing, i got my record player off ebay for $18 australian dollars, so as u can guess its not that great, but also not that bad surprisingly.

I got a 1958 Ritchie Valens LP, and that thing is priceless to me, I do not want it damaged, when i listen to the music from that and the songs off my computer, i just immediately hate the sound from my computer. Tonal qualities are better on vinyl would be an understatement.

lol why didnt i realize this... the bling... G-Unit on the signature.

Bass...thats what you hip hop guys like right? Then you havent heard bass yet if you dont listen to vinyls.

Bass frequency reproduction is x 5 better on vinyl playback (assuming your speakers are good and have wide enough cones to handle proper bass frequency playback)

Even if it's not so great, for $18 Aus dollars, that's a hell of a deal! Assuming it works great. What brand is it, btw?

I've been looking for a turntable in ebay, too, one not so expensive. I've put quite a few bids but they all ended up too high for my budget. i'll probably get this one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/pr...0mkii_fusion_series_turntable?full_sku=801240
Nothing fancy but it's a good price. It's a belt drive, but I'm going to use it to listen and sample, as a back up. Besides, I don't take good care of them anyways, so I shouldn't invest in something expensive. We used to wait til the needle either broke or just wore out to change it. I have no priceless LP's to really care for...all my priceless LP's are back in my home country well cared for.

Yeah sure, then how come when I go to Best Buy I don't see anyone selling vinyals record or whatever u call them?? lol..I don't have a problem with them, I just don't know why anyone would bother with a huge disk-playing machine thing when we have more convenient smaller CD's and I-Pods now...it just sort of surprised me that ppl still use those old things...

Some people like better quality in their music. Convenience almost never means quality.

You can't say that. ALMOST, and NEVER cant be put together, because its like an oxymoron or something. Anyways, just because its convenient, doesnt mean that it doesnt have good quality...

listening to purdy music isn't a matter of convinience...it's a matter of sound.

You can buy a 50$ record player and I think it'll sound better than any 400$ ipod (which I have) OR any 1000$ CD player.
Forget it....

I dont know what best buy is, but by the sounds of it sounds like it caters to the majority, and the majority buy cd's and ipod's, because either they have no idea of the quality of vinyl record playback and like you said yourself, they are big !!! They do take up quite a bit of space, but then again, you just need 1 record player, and vinyls are actually thinner than cd cases, so you can actually store a heck of a lot of vinyls if you got a cupboard.

It reminds me of the argument for and against old valve equipment, it's known as valves in england and tubes in america. They don't tend to use such equipment as often now due to the large transformer it requires, because of the large voltage it pulls, and also valves have to replaced often, and also they heat up a lot.

But Valve vs transistor based audio playback, valve wins. Most of the expensive and high end guitar amplifiers use valve technology, why? because the sound differences are clear, valve produces a very melodic and warm tone, where as solid state(transistor) based amplifiers produce a colder and less melodic tone.

When i plugin music sometimes to playback on my guitar amplifier, the sound is soooo much better compared to my stereo downstairs. even though it was not intended for music playback but rather just guitar.

I personally like cds. Vynls, or whatever you call it, is really old. My parents have one, and its just collecting dust in our attic.

-Hope

Lol, have u heard a vinyl? Your parents have only one vinyl?

Just cause it is old doesn't mean it's bad. The oldest vinyl i have is about 48 years old, it does have some kind of static to it, but that's because the previous owner didn't care for it too well.
