It's interesting how many colleges are offering classes now to help southerners get rid of their accent.
Wow, that's really sad, especially considering a majority of people say that they trust a person with a Southern accent moreso than any other (it was in a study a few years back). Plus, the Southern accent can be quite adorable.

Being born in Maryland and raised in the metro Atlanta area, I don't have much of an accent usually. However, since I work at Cherokee County, one creeps up on me from time to time.

When I was younger I pretty much refused to say "Y'all", but now I've grown to embrace it.

I'm from Georgia and yes, (LOL) I have an accent. I work with several New York natives and that's when it gets really obvious. My accent has gotten worse since being with my fiance. I find myself saying "somewur" instead of somewhere. I have to keep that in check. :)
Pfft. The Southern accent is far better than the Yorkie one.

Well I grew up in Virginia. Ive been told I have a "deep" southern accent- when I go up to North.

But when I go down to the Deep South most people can tell Im from Virginia right away.

I think only Southerners seem to be able to distinguish the different accents we have in the South.

Oh yeah, I live in Arlington, VA (which is really close to DC) and I don't have a southern accent and when I go down farther in VA I totally notice that southern accent and if I am around people like that for long amounts of time I tend to start to get one, but when I go back home, it immediately goes away.

Um, thats mostly because most people living in northern virginia today arent from Virginia but some place else, or if they were born there, their parents were from out of state, or havent been in Virginia very long.

50 years ago northern virginia was just as southern as the rest of Virginia.

The natives all moved away.

I have the accent of a mutt...I've lived all over...Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois (specifically Chicago...everybody down here loves the way I say ChicAgo... ;))...and when I travel anywhere, I pick up a hint of THAT accent...like, when I was in Germany (and I was only there for like six days!), I was speaking with a hint of a German accent! :)

Mine gets worse everyday. I moved up in the hills of Mississippi about 7 years ago and thats when it all started. I have lived in Ms my whole like but I never really had an accent, til moving to norhteast Ms. I guess cuz we are almost on the Alabama line. We have the long drawn out IIIIII's, like niiiiice, and riiiice. Then there are some(not me yet) that say baak for bike. Oh and my favorite to hear,"have ya Et Yet?" I'm picking up alot of the drawl, when I see my family this Thanksgiving that I havent seen in years, they are going to be shocked.
