How great are the Amish

Again, inspirational for all of us!

an amazing testimony, that's for sure!

When my parents lost their son, my brother, they were trying to get through each minute. They were so overcome with grief.

Amazing people!!!

What else would the Amish do with a million dollars? They live in self-imposed poverty.

Here they are suffering from the loss of those innocent children and they receive 1 million dollars in donations and one of the first things they think of is to ensure the the family of the guy who killed these innocent children will be taken care of.

I mean how many of you if someone in your family was killed and you received money would you give some of it away to the family of the murder?

We could learn a lot from the Amish community. They're amazing people.

I am humbled by the grace and generosity of the Amish during this terrible time for them. Their example has caused me to reevaluate my life and work on finally finding forgiveness in my heart for someone who did me a great wrong. I'm very grateful for that.

The Amish rock, and they do more for the image of Christianity than any of the 'fire and brimstone' preaching we tend to hear (both here and elsewhere) will /ever/ do.

THAT is truly Christian. I know I would not really have thought much of the family of the murderer

They surely are an example of being truly Christian!

Too bad.

They believe strongly in not repaying evil for evil...so I think this is their way, of demostrating, Christian love (that sadly mainstream, seems to lose sight of)...thanks for posting the story...Peace be with you...Pam

Pity

I am not a christian nor do I agree with a lot of the forgive the enemy stuff BUT this is admirable and conmendable just being humans, let alone religious. They display a quality that I could not give to a murderer of a child of mine or to his family.

That is a perfect example of Christ-likeness. I am very humbled.

They determine their self-imposed poverty. It's self-imposed. If they have no use for the money, there's no skin off their nose if they give it to someone else.

Amish, don't live in self-imposed poverty, they are successful farmers, and many make furniture. What they do self-impose...is non use of modern technology, they embrace simplicity in life.

Not exactly. Amish do live a self-imposed life of simplicity, which translates to a life that constantly teeters on poverty. Because they refuse government assistance, many Amish families simply go without, especially in years with extensive crop failure (like this year).

Don't believe me? Here's a map of the Amish in Ohio who are eligible for food stamps because they're below the poverty line.

But you're right. Not all Amish live in self-imposed poverty. Some choose to profit off of tourists and those who fall for their "poor Amish" act. I've known Amish who appealed to pity to buy pots and pans at yard sales for just a few cents, but when it came time to pay they'd whip out a thick wad of cash. You'll have to excuse me if I don't feel a need to pat the Amish on the back. I've known too many Amish.
