• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Okay, I've been going to a therapist and she prescribed me medicine. I've been taking an off brand of Prozac and I've only been taking it for about 5 days. They say it takes a couple of weeks for the meds to kick in. Anywho,I've noticed that since I've been on them I'm very angry, sensitive, and I just want to be left alone by everyone. I guess you could say I've been irritable, lol. Well, I was just wondering why type of side effects you guys have had from taking medicine. Do you feel the way that I feel?I'm not sure if I should tell my doctor about it yet. Comments would be greatly appreciated. thanks, c

Thankfully I've got a really really good psychiatrist. He knows it too for what he charges.
He got me on stuff that worked quickly in no time at all. He doesn't like side effects either. He is very proactive about knowing how something is working out. If it doesn't seem to be working he doesn't want me to keep taking it.
I think if I had gone to anyone else that this process would have been much more difficult.

I'm not a medical doctor and I'd always recommend that you listen to their advice but here's a few thoughts:

I've been off meds for a year now. Before that I spent two years taking a wide range of anti-depressants in variying doses. I found that the side-effects I had to deal with masked the real condition of my depression to the extent that I din't know what I was meant to be dealing with. For example on one tablet I'd only get 2 hours sleep a night so during the day I was extreemly tetchy as we all are if we don't get our zzzzzzz. This created a whole host of problems for me. Another made me so dozy I'd sleep for 15 hours in a strech if I didn't set several alarms and even then I'd want an afternoon nap. Now that I'm of meds I'm much mroe able to discern what is due to the depression and what was due to the side-effects. You may be able to do this in revers and attribute your new emotions to the tablets, in which case mention it to your doctor. Sometimes the side-effects diminish after a few days / weeks, but not always.

There is no easy answer. I've been told so much that prescribing these kinds of drugs is a bit of an informed lottery - there are certainly no guarantees that anything will work and there is always the potential for nasty side-effects. Certainly mention any side-effects to your doctor, even if they seem insignificant. These days there are lots of different brands of anti-depressants and there should be one that suits you as well as possible, though it may take some time before you find one that works for you. Also bear in mind that most anti-depressants take a good few weeks for the anti-depressant bit to work, even though the side-effects can be apparent sooner.

Hope this helps.

Eurgh, I've just started Prozac as well. -_-
I've been feeling increasinly down, very angry, hot and with headaches, nausea and "periods of excessive excitement". Basically I lose control of what I'm doing and start to bounce off walls. ¬_¬

There're initial side effects, as with all medicines, but if they persist you should notify your doctor or psychiatrist or such. Good luck. ^__^

I'm not a doctor but can give you an idea of side effects from this type of medication. There is many medications that come under the same Antidepressants as Prozac, ie just to name 2, theres Citalapram and venlafaxaline, all classed as antidepressents and also MMRIs. Ive been on prozac many years and know many others on it, but also know people who have tried it and had problems.

Most medicines like prozac have the same side effects.
So i'm going of what I experienced on Prozac, when I started on it, but also going of what one or two others have said who have struggled.

It does take 10 - 14 days to get in your system properly, possibly 3 weeks with some. Like you in the first 7 days yes I was slightly agitated, felt a bit angry, and on the second week I didn't want as much to eat. So began losing just a bit of weight but nothing to worry about. I went to the docs at that time as I also felt a bit confused, and on the leaflet it hadn't mentioned anything about confusion. (Hopefully I won't get in trouble for spamming here), the doctor and the leaflet quoted that it was normal how i felt, although the leaflet didnt mention confusing, he also said some people can eat more, it depends on the person. Basically the doc said if I was still feeling this anger after 6 weeks of starting the meds he would change them. But not to worry! The medication settled and I was fine, still am. On the other hand if the anger or frustration continues over a period of 6 weeks it can be a typical sign that the medication isn't right for you. You should usually get leaflets with your meds if you don't then even just going in a pharmacy/chemist or seeing your doctor im sure will put your mind at rest. But at the moment youve only had 5 days worth so I wouldn't worry.
