There's been various schools of thought in this thread, from taking time off to just sticking it out. IMO, like the Cheesemeister said, talk to some older people at your college, like upperclassmen, professors - both your major and others, maybe a guidance counselor or advisor, or even your chaplain-type thing.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I'm a freshman, and it seems like NONE of the classes I'm taking are getting where I want to go, and it all seems so pointless. My major, nursing, isn't exactly a religion major. It's not what you do, it's how you do it. I want to make a difference to people when you're at their worst, and show love and compassion. I don't remember where it's mentioned in the Bible (My Bib Lit prof would be HORRIFIED!) but I recall Jesus talking about how, in the body of Christ, we can's all be ears, or eyes, or hands, or feet ... the pancreas, liver, wrist, intestines, shoulder, etc, might not be the most glorious position, but seriously. Where would the hands be without wrists, or shoulders? Wouldn't the eyes and ears be a tiny bit, oh, DEAD without intestines?

I'm not saying either way that your current major is/isn't your calling, just give some thought to how you can minister to others from wherever you are. =)

Today, I felt for the first time how meaningless all my classes are. I say this because what I am studying doesn't give me opportunities to advance Christ's kingdom. I am a music major, and all day, everything revolves around studying music, practicing, and dreaming of music. Yes I love music. Yes I am a good musician with lots of potential. But I just got to thinking today, isn't there something more valuable I can do with my short life (like doing missionary work, and spreading the love of Jesus to those who don't know him) other than work all day long for something as meaningless as music?

These thoughts are sucking the passion out of music for me. And if anyone here is a music major, you know how much work and passion go into it.

I don't know whether or not you're in the same situation now as you were a couple of weeks ago. Originally I wanted to do a double degree in theology and music. God didn't want that, he wanted just the theology. So I'm doing that. I get 2 electives, of which I chose practical music (I play percussion) and now I know God knew so much better than I did and I'm really pleased I followed him as I absolutely love the theology course I am doing and my classmates.

In high school music was the one subject that got me through. However while I still love music, doing it at this level I have been beginning to lose my love of it, which is sad cuz I don't want to.

Music is a very valuable assett and its not meaningless. It is very powerful medium that can be used for good as well as evil. Talk to people around you and pray about what to do. A suggestion could be, why not take a year off to volunteer on a mission or something like that? If God wants you in his ministry full time, then although you may delay it, he will get you there.

Hey bud, I know exactly how you feel. I've been having the same thoughts running through my head lately. It's kind of funny that something like music can actually become quite self-serving. I'm studying music/guitar at Mcnally Smith in MN and I totally understand how music can consume your whole life. It wasn't too long ago that I had time to read and write and actually focus on God. Now all I do is focus on improving my craft. It's really a very selfish thing. Becoming a great guitar player isn't going to help anyone, all it does is bloat my ego which is something that definately keeps me from any kind of relationship with God. Good luck man, I don't really know what to tell you. I'm kind of in the same dilema. In my case, I'm leaving this school in another semester to go a pursue something else, possibly do some travelling first. Something to consider.

I'm sure advancing your music abilities will advance your ability to share God's love. Imagine how many people you can affect by showing them the beauty of your mosaic.

On another note, I would recommend a small group. I always find this helps me tremendously during difficult times.
