hi aaron, savedsis AND welcome divinerain!

aaron is right. that is another thing we do - play with their feet so they don't freak when we go to clip their nails, ect.

yes, playing w/ their feet, tail, muzzle all of it is so so good. Makes it much better when you have to bring the dog to the vets and we have to do anything to your dog (good things of course ;))

Well, we still have Max...He seems to be doing much better...We give him lots of play time...He needs it..So much energy.....Keep praying for him and us...LOL
That's great! Glad to hear he's doing better :)

Hi Savedsis!

I, like Aaron, am very glad to hear you decided to ride it out and keep Max. Pitbulls and Pitbull mixes are a different breed. They are the best dogs but they DO require certain human companions that have "the right stuff." Once you establish dominance in "the pack" (your hairy family and your regular family) they usually follow suit very well.

They are the most loveable dogs in the world. But they are also very strong. Once trained - and it takes awhile - they are primo dogs!

Glad to have a vet employee on board Aaron. What do you do for the vet where you work? Or ARE you the vet?

Til next time . . .

I am not the vet... yet ;P I am not a veterinary technician as I have not taken the test and all that (due to time) though I do much of the same. I have been working at the vets for over three years now and w/ such I am now alloud to do pretty much everything... 'cept surgery ;P The vet hospital I work at also has a wildlife rehab.

I take care of all the animals in the morning and evenings when I work (food, water, walk dogs, clean cage, meds if needed, etc.). I do pre-exams (weight, temp, etc.) and surgery prep (draw blood if needed, anesthetize, shave and prep, etc). I also assist the vet in surgery if need be and w/ the patients/clients. As for the wildlife I have gotten to work w/ practically every animal in the NorthWest it seems :p (raccoons, skunks, possums, blue/green herons, squirrels, eagles, hawks, deer, etc.) For the wildlife most are either injured or abandoned and too young to fend for themself. We rehabilitate them and release them back into the wild.

Well, I think this sums up a bit of what I do ;P It is so much fun. I am going into my third year of college majoring in Animal Science w/ two options in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Behavior. 2 more years and I begin vet school for another 4 years.

hi woman at the well, and thanks for the welcome. Felt sorry for my neighbors this week coz I had to leave China alone during the day coz of work, and my Mother n daughter weren't around. China just cries n howls when she's left alone.. she has separation issues. My neighbor says she sounded so heartbroken n felt sorry for her. She didn't say anything about being annoyed, but I can imagine.
Nothing I could do about it tho, I couldn't take a week off work. And I can't depend on the 13yo next door to dog-sit for me (even if I paid her), she never closes the door. (my door doesn't close all the way by itself) And I'm trying to keep Simon from visiting his girlfriends.. I'll probably never really succeed tho. He was running the neighborhood before I got him (and that's how I ended up with him). I think it was their way of getting rid of him (the ppl who used to live across the street). One time he was gone for 2 days, on the 3rd day I saw him strutting down the street with a female pit bull. He strutted right past me like he thought he was THE Man or something.

Hello. So your dog has seperation anxiety? I'm going to tell you a few things that you can do that may help (it will take time, no instant result ;))

First, when leaving don't make a big deal out of it. If you make a big deal of leaving then your dog will as well. This includes looking back, saying oh, I'm sorry boy but I gotta go. (all in your doggy talking voice of course ;p) When you are leaving... just leave don't even turn your head back or say goodbye.

Second, sometime they will associate some things with you leaving such as you picking up your keys/purse as some will associate a leash with going on a walk. To help with this you can pick up your keys/purse at other times as well when you are just staying inside. Grab them and just walk around the house and then set them down. Then you can start picking them up and walking outside to turn the hose on or whatever you have to do outside and then when you come back in set them down again. You're just trying to remove that association.

The first one though tends to be the biggest.

While for religious and practical reasons I'm not big on the idea of keeping dogs in my home, I do have a hearty respect for dogs as faithful guardians and work companions. I agree that Pitbulls have an undeservedly bad reputation. I think half of this has to do with the motives a lot of people have when they obtain these dogs. Typically I'm talking about a youngish male, who basically wants the animal to be an extension of his own "ferocity" and "masculinity" - of course it never occurs to such lads that being a man is mainly about being responsible and taking ownership over everything one has power over.

Thus, because of it's reputation, this breed gets caught in a perpetual loop of lousy owners who further contribute to the breed's reputation for being vicious and unstable. I know from my own experience this is very inccorect. While it is true that some breeds are more aggressive/energetic than others, any breed if handled properly can be well disciplined and safe. IOW. if you're a fool who plans on playing very rough with a dog, smacking it around, rewarding it for aggressive behaviour, etc... don't be surprised when it takes a bite out of the neighbour's toddler - and that's not just true of pitbulls, but any breed I can think of.

I am so glad that someone who loves and cares about animals so much is getting into that field. My parents always told me that is what I should do and I should have listened to them. I would have had those hefty student loans paid back by now and sitting in a nice practice somewhere. Bless you dear brother for your heart for animals!!!

That is definitely a typical pit trait. They are one of thee most human starved animals I have ever met. My two attached to my hip/feet/ whatever part of me they can sit nearest. Have you considered getting China a friend? I know Tison really enjoys Jasmine's company and vice versa!

Hi sparks! I'm not really sure what the deal is with brindle boxers looking like staffies but . . .our Tison looks that way too. Matter of fact, the other day I was walking him and someone who had two boxers rode by with his two young boys on bicycles and asked what Tison was. I told him - pit and boxer mixed. He said, "that dog doesn't have ANY pit in him, he is 100 % boxer!" I just chuckled. The vet even said he is about 1/2 and 1/2. So who knows! But it is strange how much they look alike! Tison doesn't have a pushed in nose either.

Their personalities are excellent. They are characters for sure! The boxer is very high spirited and full of personality just like a pit if raised correctly! So it's no wonder its hard to tell.

Boxers as far as I know originated from mixing a Great Dane and a bull dog. Does anyone else know if that is correct. I'm sure an internet search could answer that question for any breed. As for the staffy, maybe this site can help fill in some blanks for you: http://www.mypetdog.net/where-did-the-pitt-bull-come-from.html hope this helps!

I could not agree more highly with you or have put what you said more eloquently! Thank you so much for your awesome perspective on this often misunderstood, yet wonderful dog. Pits are indeed fantastic if handled by the right people! Bless you for your words! Please come by again anytime and share your positive thoughts on pits!

aaron: First, when leaving don't make a big deal out of it. If you make a big deal of leaving then your dog will as well.

hi Aaron.. I don't do that. That would just be torturous for her.

Second, sometime they will associate some things with you leaving such as you picking up your keys/purse as some will associate a leash with going on a walk.

I think she associates me walking out the door as leaving her... I don't always go out with keys. More often than not I'm not using the car. She does know that when I get the car keys I'm going to use the car.. sometimes I take her with me, which is usually to the store around the corner. She will cry and cry the whole time I'm in the store unless she sees someone or an animal to bark at then she goes back to crying. The ppl who work at the store know when I bring my dog up there coz she'll be out there throwing a loud fit.
One time I had taken her to a neighbor's house, they have a dog area fenced off in the backyard and I had her in it with their pup.. she just cried n cried even tho I was in the backyard.. she could see me. My friend's son asked me what was wrong with her. It's embarassing sometimes.

yea, she's laying behind my legs (touching them) right now.
She follows me around the house.. I should've named her Shadow. (=
We have Simon, the little dog.. those two play together. She also plays with the cats, I've got 3 cats.. she pushes them over with her nose. They were born in this house n she has a Motherly affection for them.

Shadow would be a great name for them all I guess. Our hairy family members would follow us to the ends of the earth - no doubt! They are really awesome that way. I know I never feel alone, even when no one else is around, thanx to Ti and Jaz.

Our Tison is a pretty big boy (94 lbs now :0) and he is so gentle with little dogs and babies, kids, ect. He loves them and it's funny because you almost get the feeling he thinks he is going to "break" them so he walks around them with kitgloves.

As for Jasmine . . . well she's like a bull in a china shop - I'm afraid we ruined her. She can't stand for anyone else to take our attention from her. We turned her into a narcissist. She HAS to sit on my lap all the time when I am sitting.

Praise the Lord for our dogs!
