I'm not sure what one should 'feel.' I would be wary of basing it on feeling because that can lead to scupulosity (where you never think you are forgiven).

I do feel very negative when I know I cast God's grace from my soul and I feel very joyful when I know His forgiveness has been bestowed on me and His sanctifying grace is within me again.

From the Catholic perspective:

I used to never go to confession. I figured I could just confess to God. I went back to confession (long story why) a few years ago for the first time since I was a little kid. It felt like a huge burden had been lifted. As someone who has done it both ways, I can honestly say that when the priest administers God's forgiveness by the merits of Our Lord, it gives you no reason to wonder anymore whether or not you are forgiven. Our Lord promised to the Apostles that whatever sins they forgive, shall be forgiven (John 20:23) and He honors that ministry  .

I know when I do something contrary to what I know Jesus would want me to do unsettles my spirit.. I know that to get the peace of Christ I need to repent and ask Jesus for forgiven.. I feel the peace return.. I can't explain it except I feel at peace again..I also know that when I repent He is faithful and just and will forgive me and cleanse me from all unrighteousness..shalom..kim

Sometimes when we sin and repent, we may feel forgiven. Sometimes Satan will attack us making us feel like we are not forgiven. But that is just his lie. Our being forgiven does not depend on our feeling of it or not. God has promised to forgive our sins if we confess them and He must do so according to His righteousness. Therefore, we can know with assurity that whether we feel forgiven or not, we are. We know that God has said He will forgive our sins, and we can stand upon His word.
1 Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When you Sin, and ask for forgiveness:

1. Do you feel forgiven? I don't often think of it as a feeling at all. I trust that I am. Sometimes the Spirit gives me peace and that's the "Feeling".

2. How do you feel afterwards? See above.

3. What are you supposed to feel like? You don't need a feeling to know the truths we are promised (such as being washed white as snow and our sins being as far from G-d as the east is from the west!). Don't lean on your feelings when it comes to the spiritual... sometimes I think we do that too often. But know and trust that G-d is faithful and examine your heart and go and sin no more.

Just as the devil can fill our minds with thoughts of excessive guilt and self-recrimination, the devil can also attacks us by making our hearts hard and refusing to recognize that we have done something truly wrong.

I don’t give any thought to forgiveness from God. All I can do is to strive to be as virtuous as possible, and when I see an error in my ways to correct it as quickly as possible. Speculation over whether or not we are forgiven by God is not a practical endeavor. Ultimately it will never be anything more than speculation. The only way to hope to have a concrete understanding of how God may view our actions is to carefully observe the consequence of our actions. There is not point in feeling guilty to God since there is nothing we can do to harm God. Guilt is something one should feel at causing harm to others.

When you Sin, and ask for forgiveness:

1. Do you feel forgiven?
2. How do you feel afterwards?
3. What are you supposed to feel like?

I don't know, maybe I never was taught to Repent and feel forgiven.

So what does forgiveness feel like, or do you even feel forgiven?
I use to have a very hard time with understanding forgiveness.........I got to the point of cupping my hands and placing each and everything within it.......not only my own sins but the sins of others and then just blowing them out of my hands for God to reach out and take.............I would give it to God that way.

Now I understand forgiveness so much better........
Repent to me means to turn................if I turn to Jesus and focus on him then I am turning my back on sin as I face Jesus.
And when asking for the sins of others to be forgiven I look upon them and see them the way Jesus does.........with love. I seperate the sin from the sinner. I then ask Jesus to forgive them because I want them to be forgiven. I ask in the heavenly name of Jesus for the person to be forgiven.
Also another thing I have learned this year ........the Holy Spirit showed me jesus dwelling within me. So when we do what Jesus wants of us...........to forgive others and trust him and know that he promises that sins will be forgiven and the sins are remember no more..........we need to have faith and know that when Jesus says something then it is so.

I followed Jesus around in the bible and saw how he forgave and what he said our authority was to forgive......
And yes.............we can even ask Jesus to forgive someone who has not asked for forgiveness and we can even ask for forgiveness of one who has not done anything wrong to us.
When I think of Jesus being in us............and us walking the way he wants us to walk............we should be using the authority given to us to forgive and trust Jesus to work through us..........to trust his word as true.................

I hope I wasn't confusing.............

Love
Tam

I have done a many things in my life where I had to ask for forgivness... As far as I am concerned, as long as I KNOW I am square with the Lord, I feel that what I did is not going to eternally stay with me, but I still feel the pain of what will happen in this world.

But it makes me feel much better for the most part knowing the Lord is happy with me, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. Thats what its all about. IMO.

Once I found out for a fact that Jesus is Lord, God is real I went a *slow*(like 3 years) transformation to avoid sin. I repented of sins, but I still comitted willful sins and had to ask forgiveness for them. I commit willful sins less now, but I still ask for forgiveness of sins I'm not conscious of.

If you commit a willful sin, you are supposed to ask for forgiveness for it and pray for better resistance to the same sin not happening again.

The big problem comes when you're not sure if something is a sin or not. It takes a great deal of faith to avoid somethings you're simply not sure of. Some people will say it takes a great deal of faith to indulge in things you're not sure of. On this point, I'll agree to disagree.
