• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Anyone else have sleep problems? I have tried OTC meds they make me ill. on average I get about 3-4 hours sleep no naps and after about 5 days of this I crash and burn spending an entire day in bed. This is affecting all areas of my life. I've struggled with depression for almost 2 years now all the presc. meds I've tried only make insomnia worse + other unbearable side effects. I don't have INS. right now, but am seeing a counselor. I've cut all caffeine, have a pretty physical job, too tired to work out. This is progressively getting worse. What gives? any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a similar issue...it's better now due to holidays, but in School time I get to bed at 9:00, sleep at about 11 and wake up at 4, sometimes 3. I get up at 6 without having slept again. ¬_¬

Have you raised this issue with your doctors? It's important they take this into account when prescribing you medicine. In any case, it is VITAL you do something about it, as my father contracted Chronic Fatigue syndrome due to a similar scenario, and it wrecked his life. :(

If you're like me you'll have tried everything recommended and noticed a lot of it makes things worse. ;)

Go to your doctor and talk about it, raising the possibility of medicine, as a last resort. As these medicines are highly addictive and not reccomended for continusous use, don't expect wonders first appointment. After a few weeks of trying whatever they told you to do, go back and ask for some more powerful measures.

Good luck, not sleeping is no fun at all. :(

Lack of sleep :sigh: :( I can so relate to it affecting ever aspect of your life :help: I work in Health Care and you would be shocked at how many people suffer with insomnia !!!!!!!!!!!! (side note: this did not comfort me when this life altering 'thing' affected my life and those of them around me)

I struggled with insomnia for a long time. The doc put me on sleeping meds, I became addicted and started abusing them, desperate for 'a good sleep'

I was so frustrated with all the advice of people who really did want to help, but hadn't experienced this problem...I'm sure you've heard them...drink warm milk, never do anything in your bedroom but sleep, have a warm bath, get out of bed after trying to sleep for 30 minutes or so read a book (i guess one not too 'interesting' cause in my case that would make me stay awake), and the list goes on............

I wonder if sometimes with lifes stresses and such our bodies 'rebel' and it is 'revealed ' in not being able to sleep.?

It took quite some time to learn to sleep without meds, but the new meds I'm on...definately help!

 s & :prayer: s,
Wendy

I totally understand what you are going through. I had trouble, before they put me on meds, with getting to sleep. I would stay up til 4 in the morning trying to sleep. Then I would finally fall asleep only to be waken up at 6 and unable to get back to sleep. Definitely ask your doctor about sleep meds, because when you can't sleep the rest of you feels icky too. I hope that things get better for you!

I saw my counselor yesterday. He recommended I see the psychiatrist he works under to help with these problems. This is the third time this year that I have been told i should see a psyc. Its very humbling, I'm not sure why I am so offended by this yet I am. Anyways atleast there is hope that I will maybe get some sleep soon.

I can also soooo relate. I felt like a zombie for at least the past year, I was so sleep deprived. The only thing that works for me is to try to calm my mind and not allow myself to worry or think too much. I will often pray myself back to sleep. I'm also on anti-depressants, so that's probably part of it.
Even though your job is very physical, how about a mind-clearing walk? I know it's hard to get motivated (believe me, I know!), but it really can give you more energy during the day and perhaps some help in sleeping at night.
As for seeing the psychiatrist, I'm all for getting all the help we can get. Don't worry about the stigma; be determined to feel healthy and strong! Really......would you rather be humble or prideful? Which does God want you to be?
I hope you find some relief soon. God bless!

Hey LuvinJC4ever!

It's okay to feel offended about 'having' to see a pdoc. I think some of us had different negative feelings to begin with. And yet once we made the step, were so grateful for the help ! My son, who so needs to see a pdoc (at the very least a Pychologist)...thinks only 'crazy people' go to these docs.

Society has put such a negative stigma on mental health in general. I think we were raised this way and sometimes we fight what we know we are to do and what society says about it.

May God grant you the 'strength' to carry out this appointment :prayer:

Although I have been off my meds (Effexor) for over a year now I still have problems sleeping. There have been times when I have been awake all night and sleeping pills didn't touch me at all. I don't really understand the connection between sleep problems and depression.

If you are depressed, the subconcious levels of your brain are raised. Now, your subconcious state falls below your levels, and then oscialltes depending on which stage of sleep you are in. The final stage of sleep (where energy is restored) is represented as a rise from a valley on a curve graph. If this rise goes above your subconcious level, you wake up.
If your subconcious levels are high enough, you cannot fall asleep

Hard to explain...but your mind is too full to sleep.

Before my pdoc put me on the right combination of meds I would wake up all the time at night and actually had to tie myself down so I wouldn't thrash around and hit my wife while I was sleeping. Now when I get anxious I have trouble going to sleep. I was told that trying to memorize a verse of scripture while trying to go to sleep or going over one that you already know would help. It helps me. My favorite is the 23 Psalm.
