hi savedsis and val!

it's good to see you both. i really hope savedsis gets to keep her puppy. i'll send a prayer up for you! it's so neat to have a hairy friend around.

so how is everyone doing? how are your hairy friends doing these days?

ti and jaz are doing very well. i wake up every morning with them plastered up against my side! i love it! then i get tons and tons and tons of pittie kisses and wags. it's the best way to start the day!

hey did i tell you guys that i'm going to be a grandma in november!!! not a grandma to our hairy family but my youngest son is making me a grandma and i am soooooooooo excited. it's a girl! they are going to name her victoria after my daugther-in-law's (to be) mother who just passed away 5 short weeks ago.

well you all have a great day and enjoy your pups, et al!

love & hugs,
watw and her hairy crew

How funny your pup has the same name as valentine's pup! Very cool.

Oh that blasted chewing stage! Grrrrrrr! Just give him plenty of stuff to chew on like rawhides, ect and he should leave other stuff alone after awhile.

As for the cat I think it usually takes around two solid weeks before they get to where they tolerate one another for the most part. Although I'm sure there is exceptions :0) We pray you have a speedy friendship on the way though!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Love & Hugs,
WATW, Ti, Jaz, and the birds!

This is my favorite breed! I unfortunately can't get one as I am going to college and live on campus >.< As soon as I can though I will get a pit bull. I particularly love the brindle pattern, specifically a red brindle.

They have one of the best personallities one could ask for and are the perfect size. Not a small dog, but not large, just a medium size dog w/ the perfect attitude, couldn't ask for more :D

Have y'all seen the Pit Bull Problem video? For anyone who hasn't, PM me and I will send you the link. It is so sad (seen it like three times and just about cried each time - I'm not usually a teary person.) It's a good reality check for pro-BSLers, though.

Personally, I like pitties, but I wouldn't want one a) because I am more laid back and prefer a dog who can be laid back with me and b) because I'm such a grooming freak that I can't go for a dog with short hair.

Could you post the link here for everyone to see? For one, my PM box is full so I gotta work on clearing that out a bit ;P

also, pit bulls can be very laid back as well. Those that I have known have been very well behaved and quite calm. They just want to be near you and have your companionship

Thank you for sharing that :) One part that stood out to me was where they stated that in the year they did the study (can't remember which year) but the pits only accounted for 1.89% of the bites which people don't realize because the pit bites are one of the few that are reported by media. I hate the media sometimes... ok quite often. Oh how I could say more, but I'll refrain. I can't wait till I am able to get one and show people first hand how they truly are

with it being a puppy it is most likely just trying to play. Make sure you never reward for something like this or encourage it. One thing you can do is when he mouths you put your thumb under his tounge pressing down some till he pulls away. The dog does not like it and will pull away. As long as you are consistant this should do well.

OT, for a moment, but have you ever had a pit before? What are you doing to prepare for getting one (presuming it's on the near horizon)? Are you experienced in the field of dog training?

Not trying to discourage you, but no dog is for everybody, and, nice as they are, pits are not a beginners dog. Again, not trying to discourage, I just hope you're doing a good chunk of research before you dive in to pittie ownership.

Edit: I didn't see your previous post. It seems you are probably not in hot water in the training area. My apologies if I sounded harsh, I just want to encourage anyone looking into getting a dog of *any* kind not to make the decision lightly.

I've seen the Pitbull Problem video and you're right. It is very sad and very difficult to watch. It's hard to believe people could treat such a loving animal so cruely. All they want to do is be near their people.

Your later post regarding pitbull behavior is correct. They are not for everyone and I'm glad you pointed that out. They are VERY high spirited and need to have all that energy released daily. If not, they can be distructive (yikes furniture ect). But if you exercise them regularly, they're usually good to go.

As for the nipping and biting. Our Jazzy Girl did that when we first got her and honestly . . . my son bit her back and it worked. She's a sweet girl now and we can go anywhere near her face and she is fine. We playfully mess with their faces too so they are use to that sort of behavior.

If you read enough, and ask enough question, as well as train YOURSELF and your family FIRST . . . pits are they very best dogs you can have. I know others are great too, but you all know what I mean :0)

Howdy everyone! Hope things are going better with your pup Savedsis!

yup, biting the dog is the means that their own mother would do it. basically you are saying, see this hurts, don't do that. If they don't know it hurts they think they are just playing. And it is great to play with their head and their FEET. Get them used to their feet being played with and one thing it will make the world of difference for is when it's time to trim their nails! :p

hi everyone.. I finally get to post a pic of my baby gurl that I had named China. She's pit and shar-pei mix, and mixed with lab too I think.

animalfam.jpg

One day in late '97, my Mother stopped by and had this cute wrinkly puppy with her. The pup originally came from my step-sister. I was instantly attached to the pup, and I think she liked me too. When my Mom left, the pup stayed with me.
I didn't lose anything to her chewing..she had plenty of toys (nothing with sqeekers), I had given her some old shoes (it just worked that she knew to keep her mouth off my shoes), and a couch cushion. She ended up putting a hole in the cushion n would hide her toys in there. She did mess up the blinds coz she had to be nosey, wanting to see what's going on outside.
She will still knock down curtain rods. Stuffed animals don't last long.. she isn't happy until she gets all the stuffing out.
She's dog aggressive towards other dogs, but she was great with the yorkie we had, and now Simon.. the lil dog in the pic.
I had wondered if Simon reminded her of Jasper (the yorkie). When we first got Jasper, she used to let him nurse off of her (altho she didn't have any milk.. she still never had any pups). She's motherly towards kittens too.
My neighbors who are guys don't trust her, they say she's crazy.. they won't even knock on my door.
As for kids, my daughter was 6 when I got her.. and my home has always been the hang-out so she's always been around a lotta kids. Outside she's very watchful over kids and she gets upset when she sees an adult walking towards them.. she'll do a mixture of crying with a bark here n there. After the person walks past the kids n is walking away.. she'll bark and bark and bark. I never tried to train that out of her. One time at a neighbor's house, she vocally warned a woman who was there. It make her stop and ask me if the dog was growling at her. Yep, I told the woman that I can't really apologize for my dog. She said the dog was just doing her job.. not a problem, she's a really good dog (I was glad she understood). She asked how I trained her to do that... I didn't. She was amazed that the dog was wanting to protect one of her children.
We humans can understand when a parent is parenting a child. But I think all my dog understood is this crying child (still in diapers) running away from an adult.. the adult is doing something to hurt the child. She was chasing after him with a belt (having something in her hand didn't help much) n was gonna beat him for going into the street. She didn't beat him with the belt that day.
One thing I did when it came to kids is have them give her treats.. sometimes carrot sticks which she luvs.
