This is from my friend Fernando in the U.S, as posted to Christian-nudist:
Two nights ago I saw Cuban Americans dancing in the street and the
thought that Fidel Castro was about to drop dead. I just shook my
head in disbelief. I have always been rather ambivalent regarding
Cuban Americans. On one hand I have always seen them as hispanic
kin, yet I have always resented their political leanings. I feel
much compassion for those who risk their lives to get to America
only to be dismayed by their lack of understanding regarding their
Mexican cousins risking their lives crossing the Arizona border. I
am well aware that if Elan Gonzales had been Mexican rather than
Cuban he would have been tossed back across the border before his
mother's body grew cold.
If I were Cuban American I would mourn the death of Castro, realizing
that the free ride for Cubans was about to end. Fact is most of
those dancing in the streets would be living much poorer lives if
Castro had never taken power. They would be toiling under a corrupt
American appoved capitalist dictorship in Cuba, rather than enjoying a
better life in Miami. Truth is, Castro was their "get into America
and become voting American citizens quick" card. Some dancing in the
streets realize what Cuba would be like without Castro and are
pushing for Cuba to become the 51st State.
Several Soviet leaders died and their deaths did not turn Russia
into a Democracy. Cuba will likely continue along its current path
unless the US is forced into invading and engaging in another regime
change. Some have suggested that Castro's death will lead to chaos
and more Cuban refugees forcing the US to militarily remove the
communist government. And the day will come when the right wingers
that praise the Cuban refugees today, will come to see them as
tropical Mexicans, thus pests. So, my Cuban cousins, be careful what
you pray for.
