It's simply confirmed for me that Christians really aren't any different from anyone else. That there's nothing special about Christianity such that the average Christian is nicer, or more interested in truth and justice than the average non-Christian. Nor do they try harder to be so, from what I can tell.

It's confirmed that I was a fool for expecting anything different in the first place.

Ditto.

I usually leave here feeling angry after reading certain threads. It just amazes me how people can believe such ridiculous things about people (like how all gays are super promiscous).

Despite that, I keep coming back. I'm not sure why though, perhaps seeing that some people believe incredibly supid things makes me feel better about myself.

This site, now that I really think about it, conveys absolutely nothing about Christianity. What I see here, from Christians, is that each person has their own beliefs and that each person tries to use Christianity to justify them, even in cases of two completely opposite beliefs.

I've wondered this quite often, and this is an honest question:

Why do people that are not Christians come here (though allowed and invited) once reading the forum name and title? I guess I just know that I would not have the desire to go post in an atheist forum...though the concept behind the "all are welcome" is understood.

I think if you go looking there have recently been threads dedicated to this question but i'll give you my personal take.

I was brought up in a extended family with a wide selection of beliefs from athiests to christians. I was always encouraged to ask questions and most of the answers that came from my parents (not believers but like most people in England brought up with some amount of christian teaching) was of the form "I believe ...... but others believe differently" and my parents did not always agree. I have always had a questioning nature and as I grew up I discussed Philosophy and Theology with anyone willing; Including my uncle who has a PhD in Theology and is a member of the general synod.
So I come here to continue the discussions as I find them interesting. I probably wouldn't enjoy it so much if not for the diverse beliefs here.
I also find the prudish nature of certain branches of the US population amusing - so sometimes I just lurk and laugh. However i can achieve the same thing reading capalert.com

I am also interested in politics (including the US) and freedom so I find it helpful as a barometer of the state of the world. The fundies help keep me grounded. I have also learned a great deal more about formal logic whilst I have been here and a great deal from the crevo forums (however I am not knowledgeable enough to post to that forum)

While I have been here I have gained a great respect for the buddhists that post here.

Quite simply, I like to debate. What better place to debate than somewhere where a majority of people have a different viewpoint than you?

For me, it started as curiosity after I ran into a "different flavor" Christian on another board. I wanted to understand WHY he believed what he believed. But he wouldn't discuss, just posted bible verses to make his points.

What keeps me here is the diversity of beliefs I can learn about, including the diversity within Christianity. And, of course, the many friendships I've developed over the last year and a half.

Other--it appears to show people for what they are.
It's actually inspired me to think and do research on my own faith--I would be considered a more "liberal" moderate now, so to speak.
There are negative and positive aspects to this forum. I don't even go to the Christian side of the forum--unless I feel someone there can help me understand a Christian concept better--but hang around in open to all areas. I'm just not that interested in Biblical based discussions only.

This place has quite a mix.
However, this place really doesn't affect my perception of christianity. I am here for answers and questions I have yet to ask.

Just like anything, there are the self-righteous, dumb, and patronizing individuals. It can't be based off of christianity alone.

At the same time, there are intelligent, humble, and generous individuals here. The fact they choose to stay helps this board out a lot.

Note: this goes for everyone here, not just the Xians, but also the non-xians.

Well, I originally came here in pursuit of another poster. I knew him when I was younger (we went to school together), and fell in love with him around the time I was 16 or so. Lost touch when my parents moved to another country on a diplomatic assignment, but I knew from when we stayed in contact that he posted here (he was raised Christian and originally came for advice on how to tell his family he'd deconverted; he stayed for the science discussion). I thought I'd look him up and see how he was doing. And lo, there he was.

However, it turned out that he was attached to someone else at the time, another poster on this board. Now this woman was a student of evolutionary biology and could debate creationists with the best of them. My partner-to-be had always been attracted to intelligent women, so I thought that might have been a good bit of the appeal. Not willing to concede to this other woman without putting up a fight, I instantly resolved to learn all I could in her chosen subject and show my man I could smack down the creationists, too.

Problem with this plan was that I had never been to college, and in fact had dropped out of high school at 16. What's more, with my parents wandering around the world for the government, my education had been rather piecemeal, and not really suited to the task of challenging this woman on her playing field. So I had to find a cheap, effective way to master evolutionary biology, and had about six months to do it - for soon after I signed up, they announced their engagement and plans for a quick marriage.

I immediately threw myself on the mercy of the most disgustingly romantic pro-evolution poster I could find here. He agreed to teach me the subject and help me with posts in the meantime, so I could work up to the grand showdown I had planned. This worked well enough for about three months, and I had gained a thorough grounding in biology, but then disaster struck! The wedding was moved up to accomodate my love's fiancee's mother's cousin who was just able to make it to Britain before travelling to India for a dangerous surgery. It wasn't certain that this first cousin once removed would survive to the original wedding date - so I found myself with only a week left to act.

Well, clearly the original plan wasn't going to work. I had run out of time and really only had one option left. So I immediately ran to my loyal bodyguard and asked him what it would take to sabotage the wedding, make off with the bride, etc. He thought this a bit inadvisable, both for practical and legal reasons, but he had his associates do some digging into the past of my rival. And there we struck gold. Turns out that not only was this woman already married to two other men around the world, but she was actually a he, and a former rentboy to boot! We arranged it that one of her former spurned lovers who had been looking for her would show up and reveal all.

The new plan went off without a hitch. Next thing I knew, the wedding had been called off, and my love was once again on the market. I took a convenient little trip to his area, ran into him accidentally, and consoled him over his broken relationship. He and I hooked up soon after, and the rest is history! And after all that, with CF at the center of a pivotal time in my life, I could hardly leave here, could I?

Actually no; in case you couldn't tell, I made that all up. But it's a fair bit more interesting than the usual reasons given in the multitude of threads on this topic, don't you think? :D

This website hasn't really changed my opinions on Christianity. I already knew alot about the attitudes of many Christians before coming here. Although, sometimes I find some of the things I read on here disheartening. So much spitefulness and anger. So much hostility from some Christians. I just don't understand it, I guess. I see alot of things I consider quite silly as well, such as the "boobs are gross" comment or when someone goes off on a tirade about how wearing blue jeans to church is a sign of decay. It just blows my mind people can hold to such a mentality because I just do not understand it. I just sit here sometimes with my mouth open, shaking my head in total disbelief.

Even though I am a devout Christian, I would have to say that, in general, CF gives a very negative portrayal of Christianity. For the most part, in any of the forums that allow for any meaningful debate, most of the hate and vitriol seems to come from those most strongly professing their faith in Jesus. I find that very disheartening. However, there are some Christians who post here who do show the love of Christ. On the other hand, most of the non-Christians who post here tend to put the majority of the Christian posters to shame with their thoughtfulness and expressions of caring.

I selected other.

Perhaps this has already been said--I haven't read all nine pages of comments--but I am often amayzed by the number of people who see the world in black and white. With many posters the attitude often leaves little or no room for other views, no shades of grey.

I agree with GAPCanadianChristian--the thoughful posts by non-Christians often put the Christians to shame.

I had to struggle with this poll.

In general I find two kinds of Christians here:

The first are the Christians here who exemplify and live the Christian life, they are kind, thoughtful and loving individuals…though I suspect they would be the same no matter what religion they are.

The second kind are individuals on here who convey arrogance, petty vindictiveness and overt prejudice. It is heartbreaking that these individuals so damage the reputation of Christianity.

I selected the “CF shows a negative image” option because a significant number of the moderators either fall into the second category or routinely turn a blind eye to the unchristian like behaviors of other Christians
This is about a verbatim rendering of what I was thinking of posting.
