Our unique gift to Christianity is the offering of the daily office to the laity, rather than just the monastic like the Roman Catholics and the eastern orthodox, or not at all like the Protestants but I am growing more and more aware that many Anglicans are not even aware of the office. This is not a contest, but just a survey to both find out if folks pray the office, and to make others aware of this.

The Daily Offices are availabe for EO laity and, I think, RC laity. I have a book of all of the Orthodox offices, but I don't use it much because of work, and because I'm lazy. :(

But when you said it's "offered" to Anglican laity, do you mean something different? Thanks,

Mary

Not all, but normally at least one Anglican parish in a town will hold at least morning and evening prayer everyday.

EO and RCC normally only have a Wednesday Vesper and Morning Prayer.

OK, thanks. Our small parish has Matins 2-3 mornings a week now, and Vespers 3 evenings. Our Priest is really stressing daily services as much as he can now, even though he is bi-vocational. And we have on-line readings available, too.

But I understand your point, and I'm glad it's an important part of Anglican parishes! :thumbsup:

The Liturgy of the Hours is the official prayer of the Catholic Church, and the laity are encouraged to pray the office; it is not only for priests and religious. As a member of the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, part of my daily prayer includes the hours, and there are some lay groups who pray the entire hours daily. Individuals do this as well.

I have this..and when I had a job that allowed me to..I was able to follow it all one advent. It was phenomenol - the amount of scripture and the "sermons/letters" of the saints on those specific scripture references exposed me to a lot of theology and gave me the opp. for some personal reflection during the day as it related to Scripture.

However, it is rather confusing to follow and a bit tedious - Morning and Evening prayer works wonders for those who don't have the time to be "full time" brevary readers!

I try to pray the office daily. It's actually part of the Wesleyan "Method" of Christian living. Most Methodists don't pray the office (these days), or very rarely do. The order of St. Luke is a Sacramental renewal that started in the UMC and encourages a more sacramental and liturgial life.

I used to pray the office for individuals and families but I am now starting to pray the entire Rite II office from the BCP. :)

I have three daily prayer books I used alternatively:

Common Worship Daily Prayer (used with the lectionary);
The Rhythm of Life Celtic Daily Prayer (David Adam);
and Woven into Prayer (Angela Ashwin).
The last two follow the usual Christian seasons, but are shorter than the Common Worship Daily Prayer (hence the reason I use them more frequently :sorry: ).

I only began using these after I started meeting with the Diocesan Director of Ordinands; he suggests to all prospective ordinands that they begin using some form of disciplined daily prayer. Prior to that, I only prayed with my own prayers. I naturally tend towards contemplative prayer as opposed to the way the Daily Office prayers are so word-y.

I have to admit that I was quite sceptical of the value for me in using such repetition in daily prayer as there is in the books (because at first it feels so forced and unnatural), but after doing them now for the last 6 months or so (albeit only once or twice per day), I find there is a value to it, especially in terms of them being quite well-rounded in what they cover, and also the repetitive prayers sink in after a while and somehow become a part of you.

Do you use the BCP?

I'm not real familiar with Methodist theology..but I gotta tell ya - I've stumbled on - by accident - the Northern Nazrene University website about John and Charles Wesley (as well as other Arminian articles) and I am quite taken with some of the writings. I'd like to know more about the "methods" to which you are referring.

Yes... I use the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.

I used to have the same doubts about written prayers, but they do have the advantage of not being self-centered (as my prayers tend to be) and they're good theology, and they're beautiful, and they definitely do become a part of you.

We're not really all that "methodical" anymore, but you're welcome to come over to Wesley's Parish and ask all the questions you like. We are a pretty small group over there, so it's not quite as active as this congregation, and may take a bit longer for you to get answers, so please be patient.

I occasionally pray the Daily Office from the BCP, but find it a bit confusing at times in the way it is printed, which unfortunately distracts me from an attitude of prayer.

By the way, I love the BCP, and especially the quote in my sig. below.

I usually pray the Orthodox Morning prayers in the Orthodox Study Bible.

Liturgical prayer has been a HUGE blessing for me - unexpectedly so, as I spent about 20 years as a free-form charismatic, and later, evangelical Christian. :)

Yup. I use EP from the Alternative Service Book. Not authorised for usage any more, but who cares? :) Of course, I don't really need my ASB any more apart from the readings... it really does become such a part of you.
