I do a bit of free form roleplay online, using various fantasy themes, along with a little bit of D&D. I find that it really helps to keep my imagination alive. I think that the imagination work really helps me to loosen up and let more of my creativity out. It even helps me in my family life, as it helps me to play with my little one. Creativity is one of those things that seem to die off if you don't use it. :)

I have been RolePlaying for years, and I love it. DnD builds creativity and quick wit.
It really helps that all of my current group are Christians, and that we always place Christ as the Godhead in any setting. That turns the whole thing into a good fellowship experience as well.

Although I have played with non Christians as well, and it was still pretty fun.

I have also recently started playing the new d20 Call of Cthulhu, which is based on the work of HP Lovecraft. I always loved his fiction, so the game is extremely interesting to me, because I know the setting so well.

I've had a little experience with RPGs online, but they're a lot different from actual RPGs, like the pen and paper ones that Mr. Cheese mentioned.

My experience with RPGs is a bunch of fans of a show getting together and taking on the roles of actual characters and kind of creating a story. Almost like writing a fan fiction but with a bunch of people participating.

But I have gone with an ex-boyfriend of mine to a few Star Wars pen & paper RPGs and I found them pretty interesting. I don't think I could do them myself, but they were really fun to watch.

Hmm, maybe I should try out for that LOL :D
Who here is a fan of console RPGs? Specifically I am looking for tips on "ChronoCross," for Playstation. I finished the game once, but I KNOW that I didn't get all the characters or the best ending.

To my fellow RPG fans:
I would like to ask all you other fans about how the Christians around you think of you. . .
My pastor is good, but he wrote a book called "Invasion of Other Gods" (about the new age movement) and he apparently believes Berit Kjos's ideas on RPGs because he quoted Kjos approvingly in that book in a chapter denouncing all sorts of games but mostly RPGs for being "new age" or "globalistic."
I think much of the book was right but that he missed one with the anti-RPG stuff: I have never, not even once, wanted to worship Satan or new age idols, and I am not a globalist at all. In fact, I believe that national sovereignty is the only way to keep us safe from evils like one-world-religion and totalitarianism.

However he believes Kjos's criticism, and I want to ask, is it deceitful to not reveal openly that I am a fan of RPGs and anime? Everyone in my church (except for my family and 3 close friends who I know not to be gossips) either thinks I'm an ex-otaku who has renounced all anime and RPGs, or doesn't know at all. Is it being deceitful to keep that part of my life hush-hush? Because I like my church, I don't want to lose my friends, I don't want to get my family upset, and I don't want people to hate me. . .

Edit: I included the disclaimer. . .

First of all, what does "otaku" mean? Anyways, I think it's your private decision. Personally, if I changed back, I would be open with my decision, but I probably wouldn't talk about it unless it came up. Then again, if a bunch of people, including most of my friends thought I was still out of RPGs, I would probably have to tell them, and give specific reasons why I felt it was not intrinsically evil or sinful. If I gave all my reasons, and they still didn't understand or simply refused to, I would just have to leave them to theirselves, because you really can't change other people's minds. Now don't get me wrong, I think these people have good intentions, but they need to stop reading and believing this RPG diatribe by Kjos and others. Sadly, I think the majority will remain set in their beliefs, because they have been fully indoctrinated. But as long as you live in peace with them, and let them see Christ in you, then all should be well in the end.

BTW, I've played Chronocross and know a good bit about the game. PM me with any questions you have! ;)

All,

I have played D & D since the early 70's & while I'm not surrently active (too busy! with job & kids & life generally) I still have very pleasent memories of the 20 or so years I actively played RPG's.

I am looking forward to retirement / having the kids off my hands, maybe I'll RP again? :D

"First of all, what does "otaku" mean?"
It means "devoted anime fan" and can also refer to console RPGs since some if not most now are more like a subgenre of anime. :) ;) That's in the american parlance.
In Japanese, roughly it means "geek" or "nerd" since most anime fans are. . . -^.^- (my smiley with glasses, LOL, how do you like?)
LOL, I guess for someone like me it carries both meanings.
:D

And that is why I don't like BK too much. . .I think he(?) obscures the truth sometimes. (I don't call people liars, that is as close as I get to doing that. . .)
There are some instances which really stick out to me. First of all, in her section of e-mails to and from anime fans, Berit claims that anime is condemned as "another god" and a "sinister influence" under Deuteronomy 18:9-12. I have read that passage in the KJV and NKJV, and I see no mention of anime there. It takes a LOT of eisegesis -^.^- (that means "reading into the text" for those of you who never learned that term) to see an entire art style condemned in those verses.
Another incident is where in the letters section, Berit claims that Gundam Wing promotes globalism because it ends in a "peace settlement." I haven't watched that yet (planning to at some future date. . .heard good reviews LOL) However, elsewhere on the site, anime and RPGs were condemned for being violent.
So. . .violence is wrong, yet peace is an endorsement of the antichrist's one-world government (which is by nature violent)?
I'm sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I see so much inconsistency there. . .

I've never played pen and paper games but have always wanted to try. Perhaps someday.
I do happen to be a diehard EQ player. I have lots of fun role-playing a gnome who always messes everything up. He always mispronounces peoples names in very insulting ways, and frequently lights his own hair on fire when casting spells.
I have had many opportunities to witness in-game.
I look forward to Galaxies Online.

I am going to post a quick reminder:

This thread is about console/computer/live action RPGs. If you personally feel convicted that all or any of the above are unequivocally sinful, please do not enter this thread.

This thread is for fellowship for people who play these games not for debate or if this is right or wrong. Anyone at anytime can open a discussion in our Discussion Forums if they wish to debate this issue.

This thread is for fellowship only.

Thank you :)

As someone offered before, if you want any help at all convincing your family that what they believe about RPGs is unfounded, you can PM me too.

I will not get into it here, as this is not a debate thread.
