Mini blind cord

Good reminder.. I think a lot of accidents with blind cords are not because kids actually play with them but because of slips and falls where they get caught up in them. I still tie up cords on anything like blinds even with the kids now grown.. they're a pet hazard too.

I hope your boy isn't hurting from the rope burn they can be uncomfortable

FYI, you should check out the sticky here regarding parents for window blind safety. A member here lost a young daughter to a window blind cord.

from what I understand this has happenend to many children, not just toddlers.

Yes I think one of the stories that might be mentioned on her site is a teenagers who was strangled in the bathroom shower and that the child proofing devices sold aren't always making things safer.

The first thing you need to do is report the incident to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. www.cpsc.gov
Or you and email me the incident and I can forward it to them. Someone will call you and take a report.
Include the product name, where it was bought, when it happened and some pictures if you can. Any incident that is recorded goes in a database for research.
Also, take some pictures of your sons neck.
This is serious! It happens every 2 weeks. Children up to ages 8 have died on them. Old folks from 79-92 have died on them because they have altimers and they don't know any better.
Cord are dangerous! We are currently working on getting them out of daycares in our state. After investigating, we have found a handful of daycare deaths in the nation. Please consider removing your cords! Don't just tie them up.

Thier children were also saved. They were lucky. The accidents are silent so the parent cannot even hear the child. Children have died in the same room as a parent and they never heard a thing.

I cut the cord real short, so the kids cannot reach them to pull them up. And if we pull them up, we will bundle the length of cord up high.

Does anyone have any recommendations of cordless blind brands, styles, etc.? We have a floor length window in our living room that I'm the most worried about...I drape the cord up over the curtain rod, but it still sometimes ends up hanging down.

I doubt it would do more than the burn, since it fell off the window but still, I really am not happy. I mainly posted this in case anyone else tought the cord was only dangerous for a short time (DS is 4)

My cousin's daughter once killed her kitten with blind-cords. She'd seen people put the dogs on leashes, and thought the cord was a leash, so put it round her kitten's neck, then the blinds snapped up. It devastated the whole family, especially the little girl.

You can buy some plastic things to go round the cords. It lets the cords move inside them, and makes it less likely for those kinds of accidents to happen with little ones.

I'm not sure what kind of blinds we have, but we got them at Lowes. For our French doors we have the mini-blinds that are inside the glass. They operate with a little sliding lever - no exposed cords. For the kid's room we have celluloid shades that are cordless and you just push up and down.

Please don't be fooled. This will not prevent all deaths. A child can easliy get anything and place it under the window and grab those cords you have "up high" I have seen it a dozen times now in the past almost 4 years.

I don't happen to know the proiduct name, it is just a generic mini blind bought oh eons ago...

oh and the cord was 'drapped up out of the way'...thats sort of what cause the trouble....

Put in the subject line the date it the accident happened. I will forward it to them and they can cotact you via email.
It is so important that you find out what kind of blind it is. Its really easy. Just take it down and look inside the headrail. If there is a sticker, put that info in the email and I will tell you what the product is. I have a database with all differant products.

The reviews on this product are terrible anyway. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering recalling these.

They are pretty expensive but really nice!

That name sounds familiar. They were a little bit of a splurge for us, but well worth it for our peace of mind. I'd never forgiven myself if I hadn't spent the money and something happened to one of my kids. We also have shutters that aren't cheap, but I love them.

Sorry for your loss, but thanks for helping save other children.
