where does the water in genesis chapter 1 come from ? Why is it not mentioned in the creation process ? It just seems to be there. Did God create the water ? If so on which day did he create it ?

Andy153

There are several possibilities for mentioning water.

1. The ancients had no concept of outer space. They thought of every bit of the universe as being filled with something. In fact, in Genesis 1:6, God has to create a space in which the things he will create will exist. Everything above and below this space has to be filled with something, in this case, water.

2. Why water? It may be an allusion to the waters of birth. This would fit with the image of the Spirit of God as a mother bird in Gen. 1:2. (Doesn't come through well in English translated, but it is obvious in the Hebrew.)

3. Also, the Genesis story parallels the common Mespotamian creation story in which the substance of creation was taken from the body of a great sea-monster goddess.

So, yes, the water is "just there" because in the ancient Hebrew concept you can't just have nothing once God begins creating. Something has to fill the physical world from the very moment it comes into existence.

Thanks for your response and for a very interesting answer as well.

However, by the time we get to genesis 1:9 we read that waters that are under heaven are being brought together so that dry land can appear. This water had to be created at somepoint during the creation of the earth yet I can find no mention of it in genesis.

As water is critical in the development and sustaining of life I find it intriguing as to why there is no mention as to when water is created.

The earth, with all of its water, was created long before the Genesis account of 'creation'.

There was no pre-Adamic earth. I take it you are a believer in the gap theory and that this pre-Adamic earth exsisted between genesis verses 1&2.

I guess we just don't know how the water was created then ?

I posted this on another thread just now, but will serve your question as well:

The material universe, including the earth, was created for Lucifer and the angels, perhaps billions of years (our time) ago.

It was an 'estate' and 'habitation' for the angels. It was Lucifer's 'Kingdom', or, 'merchandise'. God does not need a material kingdom. His is spirit, and superior to the material kingdom created for Lucifer.

When Lucifer rebelled, earth (and other astral bodies) were damaged in the battle and subsequent casting down of Lucifer/Satan. As Satan fell with an enormous burst of energy (as lightning) the earth's shell may have cracked like an egg, resulting in massive destruction, and drifting, fragmented land masses.

All terrestial life would have died, and the earth would have been in the condition described in Genesis 1:2.

God then restored the life support system: atmosphere, fertile earth, plant, animal, and sea life, before creating man, thus beginning His plan of restoring the order and dignity of his damaged kingdom: The restoration of all things.

We don't know what the full function of water was back then, but Genesis 1:2 reveals that the earth was covered with the stuff before God renewed the biosphere in preparation for man.

Well, I guess it just makes more sense to me than any other scenario.

Which part do you have a problem with?

I wasn't familiar with Manicheanism, so I just read up on it. Nope, I'm not one, but as in all religions there are elements that do make sense.

In the absence of revelation people are attracted to explainations that seem to make sense.

Fortunately for us we have the bible.

I don't have a problem with what you or anyone else chooses to believe. I respect your views and opinions.

The problem with your scenario is that there is no biblical proof for it.

This earth has 3 life cycles.... Adam to Noah, Noah till the end of this world, then a new earth will be resurrected from the ashes of the old.

When you insert a creation prior to the genesis 1 it makes a mockery of bible numerics, it means the earth would have 4 life cycles instead of 3.

Jude:6 indicates a place (habitation) for the angels, that they left. This is clearly a reference to their part in the rebellion of Lucifer. Lucifer/Satan was then cast (back) to the earth from where he and the (now) demons had ascended, and here is where they are now.

This clearly happened before Genesis 1, as Gen 1 begins the 'restitution' of all things. Earth was the first thing to be restored, at least the biosphere. The mountains will be leveled during the millenium.

Your numerics: the world that was, is, and is to come, is still intact, if indeed the world that 'was' only included the period from Adam to Noah. Some think that world was the pre-Adamic world inhabited by the angels.

So if we're living on the 2nd earth...how do you explain

Revelation 21:1
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

As far as we are concerned the earth, heaven, and sea of Genesis 1 is the first. Man was created after the restoration of the surface of the earth, the atmosphere, and seaLIFE, so until recently this was considered to be the original/first creation.

Note, in your reference, that the sea is dealt with separately. Genesis 1 clearly indicates that the sea existed before the restoration of the biosphere began.

God apparently was not interested in presenting the ancient history of the universe in his revelation to us, although it is alluded to, and although is can be discovered by science.

Without the pre-Adamic earth and universe the bible, and the earth's topography/geography/geology doesn't make much sense (at least to me).

The scripture you quote proves it, it looks back to the old and forward to the new from the position we are in now.

Jude speaks of those that have gone the way of Cain, not those that have gone the way of any before Adam. The angels that are mentioned in Jude have still to be judged, your saying that their judgement has already happened.

Not at all.

Jude: 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

The word 'kept' has the meaning of 'care for', or, 'preserve'. Apparantly they allowed, or caused, the earth and other astral bodies, to fall into the ruin expressed in Genesis 1:2.

The angels are now in a condition of restraint, awaiting judgement. Like a criminal, denied bail, sitting in the county jail, but headed for the penitentiary for life when finally sentenced by the judge. The place of restraint is here on earth, where they were cast along with Satan.
