Visible abs is probably 95% due to having low body fat, and 5% due to training.

You can't spot reduce bodyfat-- 1000's of sit-ups are useless.

Do cardio instead.

Good post!

yes, 1000 sit ups are useless and will cause back problems.

opinions are like bellybuttons, everyone has one...

However, I am going to contradict about everyone here with mine. ABS are UNDERATED. Core strength is the most overlooked part of training by most people. Common sense...strong tree limbs are no good if the trunk isn't solid. If your going for looks, first get rid of gasses, toxins, and fatty acids (soda pop is an especially dangerous culprit). Then use intense (not necessarily lengthy) cardio to lower your body fat. Example, one of my morning workouts includes a 1000 yard swim, jump out do 60 sit-ups, then 1.5 mile sprint all in about 20 minutes. I wouldn't say that 1000's of situps are useless, but intense crunches and situps are more helpful. Go for strenuous reps (i.e. 4 second crunches, using holding medicine ball above head for situps). You're looking for quality over quantity. Oh, and remember all those toxins and acids you need to replace? Eat lots of chicken, tuna, and nuts. Be careful about products like hydroxicut unless you've really researched what you're doing. If used improperly they can do more harm than good. Okay, that was about my bellybuttons worth;)

Eating HEALTHILY, and sensible amounts...which may not necessarily mean eating less...and exercise, i do horse riding and martial arts and they work...but if you don't eat enough you're not gona have enough energy to do these things, and if you really go too far with it you'll end up losing muscle tone...which would defeat the object completely...

As is stated above, core strength and development is absolutely essential and very underrated. You're abdominals, obliques, and loweback are used as stabilzer muscles for many basic movements, and in several these muscle groups are where the majority of the momentum of a movement is generated (think a lumberjack chopping wood, a boxer throwing a right cross, and etc.)

Anyhow, the only way to get not only visible abs, but a six pack (defined by the abdominal muscles actually having definition, not just poking through limited bodyfat) is to clean your diet (stated relentlessly) and to excercise your abdomicals in an anaerobic, high-intensity fashion. I'm talking sudden movements (plyometrics), incline sit-ups with weights on your chest, or tabata method (I'll explain if anyone is interested.)

It's really simple, only takes 4 minutes for one excercise, and it really kicks your butt.

Step 1 - choose a bodyweight excercise or a barbell/dumbbell excercise that is simple in its mechanics.

Step 2 - do as many repetitions as physically possible for you to do for twenty seconds.

Step 3 - rest for ten seconds.

Step 4 - repeat 7 times.

It will really kill you, but you'll train your central nervous system extremely well, and your anaerobic workload will increase boatloads with continuted usage. Be careful not to overtrain!

Obviously, caloric intake per day is a big factor. A bigger factor is excercise. They go hand in hand and can't be separated.
It does matter where your calories come from and having a good athletic diet is important to loose fat weight and look good while doing it.

I think all y'all are right.
When you eat healthy, you can eat a large salad (lettuce, fresh veggies, with a vinegar/lemon juice dressing) and have a very small amount of calories vs. eating a hamburger. In this case, you could eat MORE and get LESS calories than eating a hamburger.

Nonetheless, the key thing to remember is to loose weight you must burn more calories than you consume.
To put it into perspective, nutrionists have come to the conclusion that roughly 3,500 calories is equal to one pound of fat.

Like Tuffguy said, you also need to exercise. When you don't have a large supply of fat to loose, your body is going to look for muscle to burn, as well. (When you have a large supply of fat to burn, you will burn less muscle) So, if you want to see your abs, loose the fat that is infront of them... but you need to do all-over weight training as well, to keep the lean body tissue.
Best of luck.
