To Jason:

What you "say," and WHEN you say it depends very much on your Spiritual Gift. Paul talks extensively about Spiritual Gifts in his letter to the Church in Corinth. We all have a Spiritual Gift of some kind. Perhaps you sing, perhaps you paint, perhaps you have the silver tongue, and can speak beautifully in public. For me, my Spiritual Gift is writing.

You finally learn to become complete in God, when you are able to totally surrender yourself to Him. For me, this was when I could, in my heart, lay my Spiritual Gift upon the altar, and say, "Lord, You gave me this talent. I am nothing without You. Please, take this wonderful Gift You have given me, and use it as You will." And you leave yourself open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as to how and where to use the Gift. And you TRY not to be impatient, LOL. God works in His own time, not man's time.

I remember, when I attended a Protestant church, how the subtle pressure was always on to "be a witness for Christ." The whole idea scared the tar out of me. Was I REALLY supposed to go stand "on the highways and byways" and proclaim the Good News? It sure seemed like that is exactly what was being implied. I'm not putting down the folks who do just that, because perhaps that is indeed what their Spiritual Gift enables them to do, and they have the Holy Spirit filling their mouths with the words to say. But I've SEEN people hollering on street corners, and to me, it just seems the public turns away and walks faster. And I would die a thousand deaths before I could even attempt something like that.

There are so many LITTLE things you can do in your life to show those around you that you have faith. I've got a Bible very plainly visible on my desk at work. On Ash Wednesday, I attend Mass at lunch, and then return to work with the smudge of ashes on my forehead. I show compassion towards my coworkers who are having problems, I offer to help when I see someone in need. Little things.

God has a plan for you, Jason. And He will reveal it to you in due time.

Peace be with you,
~VOW

Right now, my sharing the Gospel entails being on these message boards & trying to share my faith with others. Also, just being a mother really helps me to share the Gospel - I have to do it by example so that my baby will learn the faith from an early age. I also try to let my life be an example to my anti-Catholic family that I am not on the pathway to Hell. I know that several of my family members (sister and Dad, mainly) are very receptive to what I say - and I think I can credit the fact that I am "showing" them that I am a good Christian even though I no longer practice my faith the same way as them....

I'm with VOW - when I was a Protestant, I always thought I'd go to Hell because I could never do the sort of public things that seemed to be required of me. It just didn't seem "right" to me to do that, but that is what was expected....

I was thinking more along the lines of what exactly do you say?

In other words, with Christians, people have different ways to share the gospel. But in light of baptism being a requirement for salvation, how do Catholics share the gospel message?

-Jason

Is witnessing then a gift?
Are not all Christians called to be a witness for The Lord Jesus Christ?

Yes, Julie, all Christians are to be witnesses for their faith.

The TYPE of witnessing, though, in my mind, is according to each person's Spiritual Gift. Some people are called to serve, others to heal, some to speak, some to write.

Peace be with you,

To witness means to tell what you know.

2 Corinthians 5
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us : we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations ; and then shall the end come.

John 3:11
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know , and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness .

Julie -

I am going ask you publicly to start asking your own questions and stop posting other peoples quotes as if you are trying to spark a debate.

I get the feeling that you have an agenda with Catholic teachings and rather than hide behind someone elses question maybe you need to be upfront.

If you continue to post the same questions over and over again I will give you a strike towards a two week vacation.

Peace.

You share the gospel just like Jesus shared the gospel.

For instance, you can tell people parables. Jesus did that a LOT. You can tell people to repent. You can tell them that he is risen from the dead. There are lots of precious truths you can share, nuggets of wisdom from eternity.

It was prophesied of Jesus:

Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old

Psa 49:4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

1Pe 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1Pe 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,
1Pe 1:21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
1Pe 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.
1Pe 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
1Pe 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

hmm, good question Julie, I try to make sure that people know what believe and I try to be a good person, I think I would like to do missonary work after college, living in America I assume most people have heard the gospel but not everyone believes so the best thing we can do is not "get the word out" it is already out but to live lives of integrity and justice and humility

We don't always have to preach with words. It is the way we live our lives, the way we treat other people as well as shouting it from the pavement.

I'm not sure what you mean about sharing the gospel in light of baptism being a requirement for salvation??

You can tell people these things until the cows come home, but sometimes people aren't ready to hear it. Sometimes people have had experiences that had hardened their hearts, and God needs to soften their hearts first. And this is where we can introduce them to the Gospel by the subtle things first, the way we live our lives, maybe we carry rosary beads, or have a bible with us or pray, or have some other possession that indicates our beliefs, we can also pray that God soften their heart and make them more receptive to His message. Prudence and patience are also important when sharing Gods message to others. God's message is one of love.
