Trinity (I know, I know...)

Let me start off by saying that the day I understand God, I would be God, and then everyone will be in a lot of trouble. How do we best begin understanding the trinity of God? Well, the first thing you need to do is read the entire Bible from beginning to end, in it's original language. Everyone done that so far? Ummm..yeah...me too...ahem. But seriously, the trinity of God is presented from the very beginning of the Bible:

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God...

The word for 'God' is Elohim. Did you know that in Hebrew, an -im indicates the plural? It is just like putting an 's' on the end of an English word. In other words, from the very beginning God is presented in His trinity.

Throughout the entire Bible there are dozens upon dozens of allusions to the Trinity. Look at, for example, the benediction in Numbers 6:24. It speaks of 'the Lord, th Lord, the Lord' three times. Isaiah 6 the angels cry out 'Holy, Holy, Holy' an allusion to the nature of God. Father, Son, and Holy Spiit are constantly being put together. Matthew 3 and John 14 to name just a few. First Corinthians 12 Paul talks about spiritual gifts, again comparing God, Lord, and Spirit as separate but equal. 2 Corinthians 13:14, again all three natures of God presented as separate and equal. 1 Peter 1:2, all three together again. The list goes on and on and on.

God is One, but he is three. Well how does that work together? I don't know. I can't know. But that does not mean it cannot be. We are presented ample evidence as to the equality of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and on that evidence alone we should have faith. Let me put it this way: the trinity is not illogical, it is supralogical. That is, it exists, but it is beyond our finite minds to actually comprehend. John MacArthur says it well:

"You say - Well, how does that work together? I don't know. I haven't got the faintest idea. And this whole message as compared to the true reality of God is like one pebble of sand compared to every piece in the universe. I can't figure God out. If you try to figure out the trinity you'll find yourself under the bed saying the Greek alphabet. You can't figure that out. There's no way. Let it be. Just believe it. God is one, yet He is three. And I don't mean in saying that He's three that that's like modalistic Monarchianism or Sabelianism, which was an old heresy that said God was really a quick-change artist. That God had a closet and He'd just..you know...He'd come out and do His God thing - da-da - and then He'd run back in and put on His... put on His Holy Spirit suit and He'd run out and do that bit for awhile and then He'd run back in... That's really what they were saying. No. God is one and yet He is three at the very same time. And people say - Well, it's like an egg; the yolk, and the white and the shell. Oh, that doesn't make it...to me, I...I can't compare God to an egg. Other people say it's like water that's got...it can be ice, or liquid, or vapor...that doesn't make it either. It's not like anything, people, it isn't like anything at all. Some people say it's like light, it can illuminate, or it can warm, and it can produce energy. God is just God and there's not a light bulb in the world or an egg in the world or a chunk of water like Him. He's God. And He's three in one. I don't understand it. I believe it. And I'm glad I don't understand it."

Here is my next point, and it will be brief, but I believe the most potent. I challenge anyone who belives that Christ is not God to explain away the entire book of Colossians. The entire book is dedicated to the Godhood and All Sufficiency of Christ. I guess you will just have to ignore part of God's Word. And guess what? If you do that, you are putting your faith not in God, but in your own limited knowledge.

I could go on and on and on and on about the Trinity and the Godhood of Christ, but I will simply close with this:

Colossians 2:9-10

For in Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and you are complete in Christ, who is the head of all principality and power

Much Love in Christ,
Matthew A. Hebbert
