Incase none of you are aware of this there are many people trying to discredit the OT books in this thread. I am at a loss for words as this is not my area of expertise. If there are any OT scholars here your help would be appreciated.

I warn you now this is the ALL members area, if you are not comfortable with Atheists, this isn't the place for you. I am worried about lurkers who may be on the fence about God. Someone needs to set them straight. Please only the strong in faith respond. :)

God Bless you.. :prayer:

Anyone know what to do with this one?

Well, the claims in Exodus regarding the Jewish captivity by the Egyptians, while not falsified as such, are dubious. There are no Egyptian records of there being a loss of millions of slaves (the biblical numbers are in the millions) or the loss of a pharoah and his army, or of any of the plagues mentioned in the Bible.

While such a disaster may have been hidden by the Egyptian record keepers it is hard to see how they could do so. The economy of Egypt would have been severly disrupted by the loss of millions of workers. The plagues would have been apparant to everyone. The death of the pharaoh and the loss of an entire army (which to have had any chance of rounding up millions of fleeing slaves would have had to be very sizeable indeed - 50,000 would probably be a miniumum) would have been impossible to hush up, and would have made Egypt vulnerable to either invasion or civil war (remember that the first born of the pharoah was dead also, calling into question the succession for the throne).

There is also no physical evidence for millions of people living in the Sinai Desert for 40 years. Not one single piece of pottery or jewelery dated to the time period has ever been found there.

All in all, this suggests that this biblical account is false.

The topic of the thread has to do with falsification of the Bible in general. However, it has become more specific to the validity of the Exodus. I'm afraid I am out of resources.

The gentleman is seeking archeological evidence specifically, or perhaps historical extra-Biblical manuscripts and/or papyrus.

My faith is not in jeapardy here, just my ego. ;)

Thank you in advance. :)

I've scanned the thread and sure enough, it was exactly what I thought it was  .

Disingenous people living in a vaccum. I don't think they realize what seems to be the standard for required evidence of Ancient History events these days. There is more evidence for the walls of Jericho coming down then there is for Alexander the Great marching across the known world.

If I bothered to show that to those folks, would they care one whit? Not at all.

I had to chuckle a bit....In the past few years I have come across two articles in the Jerusalem Post about different people form Egypt that wanted to sue Israel for stolen property (plus interest) taken in the exodus. The idea was quickly dropped when Israel thought to countersue for back wages!

I know many of the folks posting in this thread quite well, and they're pretty nice people, on the whole, most of them know the Bible quite well, and they know even more science.
Please keep in mind that a Christian started this thread in the Open Science Forum asserting that the Bible teaches that the world is a sphere. That member challenged them, not the other way around; they aren't trying to discredit the OT, because they have yet to credit it in this literal sense.
In the debate, it's up to the writer of the OP (and anyone who cares to wade in there to try to help) to prove his assertion; in effect, it's up to him to "credit" the OT.

Christy, IMO, you have chosen the best possible place to seek help. :)

I won't be participating in this thread, and it doesn't happen to be faith I lack; as I said, they're nice people who have never given me a hard time for being a believer, and they have no interest in deconverting anyone. I hang out with them a lot, and, speaking only for myself, I can do so in safety, because they aren't on the attack, but they do do dearly love debate, and they expect a great deal from those who invite them to debate. So what I most lack is both enough knowlege of science and enough knowledge of the Bible to assist in that thread.
Trust me when I tell you that they can wipe the debate floor with anyone who isn't a fine reasoner, with a comprehensive knowledge of the O.T. (and a farly good knowledge of science wouldn't hurt any.)
As long as you keep that in mind, feel free to have at 'em, but do keep in mind that if you could prove something of real intellectual value, at least some of them would feel duty bound to alter their own beliefs in response to you're being correct. Also, please keep in mind that they're having fun, and aren't actually out to get you. Really! Honest! :)

Actually, I was quite impressed with your posts. You've been doing a great job! You've found new material, cited your sources correctly, and been pleasant and calm throughout, which may be the hardest part of all. :)
It's easy to see that you're faith isn't in jeopardy, and I can see no reason for your ego to be bruised, either; quite the reverse. ;)
