OK everyone, we've kinda been on this merry-go-round before... but, in case there is any new insight out there... well, I always love to hear the opinions and ideas you guys and girls give.

So... even after living here for 16 months now we have still not found a church home. Back home we went to a non-denominational church, which though not perfect (because no church is perfect) was a wonderful place for us where we could learn and grow and were we knew we were (and still are) loved (as we are, with our good points and our flaws). Our latest experiance has kinda gotten us down a little... not that we don't still know who we are in the Lord, just that we're finding it hard to think we'll ever find a church where we'll fit.

This time I'm just going to lay out our basic beliefs... (note: none of the comments made are meant to put down anyones beliefs, not at all, just stating where we are at in our beliefs and where we aren't).

God: We believe in the one triune God who is infinite, eternal, almighty, and perfect in holiness, truth and love. The trinity is made of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are co-existant, co-equal and co-eternal. Each person of ht etirnity is completely unique, yet the 3 are 1.

Jesus: is the only begotten son of God, the eternal Word made flesh, supernaturally conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He is both fully God and fully man. He died on the cross for all mankind, was burried and rose from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father where he intercedes for his people and rules as Lord of all. He will return and the dead shall rise and the those alive in Christ will be transformed. He will judge with just and the unjust. Etc.

The Bible: We believe the Bible is true, literal and infallible. The creation story as well as other stories are literal.

Communion: Was instituted by Jesus at Passover. The elements are symbolic. The Lord's supper is open to all who believe Jesus is the Christ.

Salvation: We lean towards Calvinism in this area. We believe that God chose those who would be saved, the elect, before the foundations of the world. We believe all the elect will be saved and that the elect cannot lose their salvation. However, while we believe in predestination... it is mostly concerning Salvation. We do recognize scirptures that speak of making choices... we believe that these scriptures are speaking to the elect, that once saved there is a degree at least of free will, where we have to choose to serve God and show the fruits of our salvation. Salvation though is not by free will, if it were our choice it would be a work and we are not saved by works.

Eternity: We believe that the Bride of Christ will reign with Jesus forever... there will be a new heaven and a new earth. Satan, the fallen angels and those who didn't believe in Christ during their earthly lives will be eternally seperated from God (we lean towards a literal hell which is eternal, though we've heard some interesting arguement that the punishment is for a time and then they just cease... but, this is a mute point for us as beleivers).

Baptism: Is to be of the believer, by immersion. Not of infants. Those it should be open for children who have reached the age of understanding (which may or may not vary from child to child, not sure) and who have come to know the Lord Jesus as their savior (basically saying you don't have to be an 18 or older adult to be baptised, just a believer, old enough to understand salvation).

Gifts and Miracles: We believe neither have ceased, but are alive today. (we do see the gifts abused and faked often though and therefore tend to steer away from "overly" pentecostalish type churches, churches that are disorderly (God is a God of order, not chaos). (We also avoid churches that are into the "name it claim it"/word of faith/kingdom now kind of stuff). Saying all that... we have witnessed the gifts in action and know that they are NOT all faked, but the the Holy Spirit can and does truely move through His people to bless and edify indiviuals and the body of Christ. (Oh, and whereas Tongues are fine... they are not an absolute requirment to "prove" one is Spirit Filled).

Men and Women: were both created in Gods image and have equal value and worth in Gods site. However, we lean towards women not being in leadership positions, such as Pastor, which places them in authority over men. My Mom is a minister, and I basically leave that as... God spoke to her as to what He wanted her to do with her life, He has not told me otherwise, so I have been loving and supportive of my Mom. We do visit her church when we are visiting them. But, when finding a church home for ourselves, we would not choose a church with a woman as pastor.

On social issures:

Homosexuality: Is a sin and not an acceptable lifestyle... especially for church leadership. Those who live the homosexual lifestyle are just sinners, like the rest of us. And like other sinners, we should treat them with the love of Christ and pray for their repentance and salvation.

Divorce: Is not Gods best for us. But is permissable when for reasons such as given in scripture... though it should still be as a last resort. Still, God does not love the divorcee any less. And the person can be forgiven and restored. Those who have been divorced and remarried can still love and serve God and be mightly used by Him for His glory, just as the rest of us.

Birth control and Fertility treatments: Non-abortive methods to avoid pregnancy are fine, though couples should be cautious of their motives behind limiting the size of their families. Children are a gift from the Lord. Couples who have to seek medical help to conceive should do so. But, methods that would require the destruction of a baby at any stage beyond conception (when the sperm fertilizes the egg) should be avoided. If a large number of multiples aren't wanted, a method that could create them should be avoided.

Abortion: All life is precious and should be protected from conception through old age. Aborting a baby for convienance is murder (though we must remember that women who have gone through an abortion are hurting and need forgiveness and salvation). In a case where both Mother and baby will die and there is a chance to save the Mother... the case should be looked at on it's own basis and prayed over (though quick prayers may be needed)... the life of both Mother and Baby is precious and all that can be done to save both should be done.

and personal issues: (though we do not judge those who do otherwise, we have personal convictions concernign the following and it is how we do things for our family)

As a family we have made the personal decision to not celebrate Halloween, though we have participated in church sponsored events such as Hallelujah Night and Fall Fest... make-believe and dress-up is not a sin and neither is having fun in the Lord... the main thing for us is not giving any glory to Satan and not promoting things that are scary or gory.

We do not do the Easter Bunny, Santa or the Tooth Fairy. While make-believe is ok an a good imagination is a healthy thing... we choose to keep make-belive what it is, fiction. We do not call something that is fiction the truth. God is true, Jesus is real... these other things are not. We do presents and even a tree at Christmas, and Santa cartoons are allowed... we are just clear on the fact that Santa is a story. We have begun to incorporate Hanukah into our December activities and use it to teach about how Jesus is the Light of the World. We do not celebrate "Easter" and feel that there is scriptural evidence for this. We do however celebrate Passover and the Resurrection of Jesus... we avoid the Bunny and things that are pagan in origin that have been incorporated into tradtional "Easter" celebrations. (we are still working this out for our family since our extended famiyl still does "Easter"). While we have been studying the Jewish festivals for ourselves and our family and have been slowly incorporating them into our lives... we do not feel led to attend a Messianic church and we are fine with going to a church that does Easter (for we know that born again Christians are right in their hearts and celebrating the resurrection of our Lord to the best of their ability and they don't Have to Have the same convictions as we do).

Well... that's the basics for us.

Anyone know where we would fit in?

I don't bother trying to attend a church with whom I agree on everything. I left a C&MA church when I started believing in all the gifts but the charismatics don't like me because I believe in the roles of men and women as taught in scripture, including head coverings. I'm bouncing around, but back to a C&MA church right now until some unforeseen irreconcilable differences might arise. At least this one doesn't continually preach AGAINST other denominations. The pastor of this church doesn't seem to feel threatened by my differences in beliefs. But mostly, I keep my mouth shut until asked about them. My simple advice to you would be to avoid churches that feel threatened by your belief in the Word, receive those that receive you. Romans 14:1-15:7

Oh... I want to add these...

We are not into leagalism...

While dh is trying to quit smoking... I'm not sure whether it's a sin. I definatley think smokers can and are used by God and should not be excluded from being involved in church ministries.

We believe drunkness is a sin and drinking too much should be avoided for sure... but, it is NOT a sin to have a glass of wine with a meal (or beer, or whatever drink you might like for that matter).

While we think we should have standards for how we live our lives, and those being according to the Word of God... we do not care for signing a contract of any sort stating we will live by a set of rules and standards that are clearly manmade (see recent thread on protestant board).

We have made choices in what is acceptable entertainment for us as a couple and then for us as a family. We do not agree with basing choices for say... movies... on things such as ratings. There are R movies that we think are ok for adults to see, including Passion of the Christ... and then there are G, PG and PG-13 movies that we do not find acceptable for us or our children. We have made the personal choice to listen soley to Christian music on the radio... and the majority of of CD purchases are Christian in genre (though we do have some movie sound tracks... and well, I have the Beatles 1 CD. lol). I don't fault those who listen to secular music... for one I don't think it's all bad or inappropriate... though I think Christians and definately parents should screen the lyrics on albums for themselves and their children.

And... on healing... we believe God can heal most definately. However... we believe it is wrong to tell someone that they are not healed because they lack faith. I know people with disabilities who may never be physically healed on this Earth... but who probably have more faith than I will ever have. Disabilities and illnesses can be used to the glory of God in multiple ways. We think that the focus on healing should be more on healing people first spiritually and them emotionally, and when it's Gods will, physically. We also believe that God can bless in so many ways other than through material things... and while we certainly accept and praise God where we have been blessed in material ways, He is not required to do so in order to gain my faith and love for Him.... I would much rather focus on blessings that will be for eternity than ones that will only be temporary on Earth.

Onederwoman,

I think it's wonderful you've been able to systematically articulate your desires and expectations from a 'church'. I know I don't do that, and the only 'deal-breaker' in a church for me is the adherence to essential doctrines (ie. salvation), all others are workable or bonuses (eg. style of worship, church programmes, etc.).

I used to minister to overseas students, and when they finished school and going back to their home countries, the question pops up: what church should I attend? My answer has always been: Yes. I'm not being facetious, but I advised they should attend church - a church is better (qualified as above) than no church, and God - who loves us - know our need and will lead us to where we need to be.

My wife grew up catholic simply because she attended a girls catholic school. When she went to university, she went to a baptist church simply because it was the closest church that she could walk to. That's where we met. I believe because of her childlike faith, she attended a church. We then attended a charistmatic church (20+ years!), and because we moved homes, now attend an evangelical. We believe this is where we need to be right now in God. The point? God knows, God's in control, and God loves, so he will lead us to where we need to be, regardless of the 'labels' of denomination, regardless of the type of church, regardless of the type of worship service. He's looking for our faith.

Hope this helps.

I have been attending the same church for the last 17 years. I, along with my wife serve on the board of elders. She heads up the elementary Sunday School and is part of the worship team. I am the HELPS Minister and also teach adult Sunday School. I don't see eye to eye with some in our church on many of the topics you mention, sometimes even Pastor. There are many times where we do not feel that we "fit in" or "belong" in our church.

BUT, we know God has called us here because those 17 years ago we asked God to lead us where He wanted us to go. We especially didn't feel like we "fit in" when we got here! Much of the small congregation (the church was only about 1 year old) was made up of the pastor's family! We stayed because we knew this is where God wanted us. We have had plenty of opportunity to leave since then, but those opportunities were only available because we were looking with our eyes and not our hearts.

Because we have purposed to serve within our church and not rely on our feelings of fitting in we have seen God honor us many times over. The lives we have sown into. The ministries we have become a part of. None of this would have happened if we hadn't put aside "us" when it came to certain differences of opinion and doctrine.

I guess I am trying to say is how do you know or not if you fit in if you have "Looked" into several churches in the last 16 months? I didn't read in your post of any mention of prayer for guidance on where you need to be. We are His body under His headship and it is He who calls us so it should be Him to tell us where we are to be a part.

Watch it though! God may want you somewhere that you may not feel you belong! :)

With the exception of your Calvinist views,Calvary Chapel may fit well with your beliefs. They will not be judgemental of your Calvinist tentencies, but will gladly discuss their views with you if you ask. Check out their website and look under ministries to find a CSN (Calvary Satalite Network) Radio station in your area to see if you are in line with their teaching style. They are pretty much just straight through the bible teaching with modern worship. There is one in NW AR too. If this church is not for you, pray and trust the Lord and He will guide you to where He wants you to be:clap:!
In His love,
Rob

We're not expecting the "perfect" church... it doesn't exist (not until Christ's return). Of course we have been praying through this whole process. I guess a better way of saying we haven't found where we "fit" would be that we haven't found where God wants us to be. We aren't really surprised to have been looking so long. Before we moved we received a word from someone at our old church that it would take us a long time to find the church God wants us in. When we are in a better mood (than we have been in the past few days... see recent thread on the Prostestant board to know why this past week was so frustrating... we were practically kicked out of the church we'd been attending for almost 2 months because my husband smokes... he is trying to quit, but hasn't succeeded yet) we look at our extended hunt for a church home as the opportunity to see how different congregations and denominations worship and "do church".... and as an opportunity to make Christian friends in the area beyond whatever church we end up making home. So far we have made a small handful of good friends that we look forward to developing lasting friendships with at two of the churches we attended (each for about 3 months give or take a few weeks). I'm not sure we made any friends at this last church over the 6 weeks we were there, but not for lack of effort. I think we will just know when we get to where we are supposed to be.... I kinda knew this last one wasn't it, but I was hoping I was wrong (we are expecting #2 due in September and I was so hoping to be settled into a church by then). We're still trusting in the Lord in all things. And if God uses someone here to encourage us than Praise the Lord! :) (note: the friends we've made from the 2 churches previously mentioned have been super supportive in the disappointment of this past week, we are thankful God put them in our lives).

Thanks for the suggestion. We have tried this one, and may revisit it later. However, they are smaller than what we'd like and don't have much of a childrens ministry going. Also... they do not really have any Sunday school groups for adults on Sunday mornings and they don't have cell groups for Wednesday night. There is a womens group and a mens group each meeting during the week, but the mens group wouldn't work with my husbands work schedule ... and well, we'd prefer to have a couples group (or mixed couples and singles). And though not a biggy I guess, we don't know that we agree with their view on when and where the gifts can be used. They won't use them in a service because they don't want to offend a non-Christian who might be attending. I don't think that's a scriptural view. Not that we absolutely have to go to a church the moves in the gifts... but to me the scriptures are plain that gifts should be a part of a gathering of believers... and if you believe in the gifts, why would you want to hinder them? Oh well.

I don't mean to come off sounding harsh for this is not meant to be so. This post quoted above is what I meant by us looking or God leading. I know a Charismatic who has been faithful in a non-charismatic church for several years and God has blessed him and his family richly. How can this be? He and his wife simply follow the leading of God. They do not argue over any doctrine that is not detrimental to salvation. They don't look for programs the church may or may not have. They have not set any parameters on God's leading. They have purposed not to do anything that may cause offense to another within the body of Christ.

Many times we do not realize how much we still control our own lives. We have our own opinions and views and we expect God to conform to them. Some will not attend a church because the Praise and Worship is too contemporary. Others choose not to attend a church because there is no Childrens Ministry. Other reasons range from the church is too small/large to manner of dress, version of the Bible, and not feeling any love. The list can go on and on but God doesn't have a list.

Churches are not here for us to be ministered to (a few exceptions). They are here for us to minister to God. One should be prayed up, filled up, and overflowing with the joy of the Lord so as to be able to praise, honor, and worship God and minister to the lost and the babes in Christ. Sometimes when one attends a church they have to take the wheat along with the tares and seperate them later. Kinda like a cow when it eats. It doesn't stop eating if it finds a stick. It simply keeps on feeding and removes the stick as a part of the chewing process.

If a church doesn't have the programs that we feel they should then perhaps we have been the ones called to that certain church so that the pastor has someone who is able to fulfill that ministry for him. If a church doesn't have a specified childrens ministry (other than Sunday School, ours doesn't) then that leaves the responsibility of training up the children in the ways and admonitions of the Lord up to the parents.

Paul was a great example of how we are to serve the Lord no matter our situations, enviroments, or encompanyment. He stood in the midst of believers, carnal, babes, unbelievers, pagans, and still others yet he did not allow it to deter him from serving.

I encourage you to take all expectations of "the" church and give them to God. Don't look for where you fit in but where you can serve. A place where you can work and be of an asset to the Kingdom of God by strengthening His work within the local church. Don't look for what "the" church can do for you but look for what you can do for it. We are all (as believers) a part of the body of Christ and thus we are all called to do our part. God's Army, It's not an adventure, It's a way of life!

Godz Marine....

We also desire to cause no offence. And we've also never had a problem going to a non-charismatic church. We are human and of course have our preferences, but we have visited churches that were out of what we might have according to "the list"... we've visited churches with attendance ranging from 10 to 6,000. We've visited churches of every sort of affiliation... denominational and none (only one's we've avoided are the ones we know are liberal and do not hold the Bible as infallible... with one acception, we have visted one of the bigger UMC's here). We weren't specific at all (other than the Bible believing requirment) at first. Now as we've nearly exhausted the possibilities in our area we are getting more specific when trying to find a church. Really our list of "must haves" are only in the essentials... the other things are in the "would prefer, but not really what would make the decision for us" section.

And... by beginning your reply as you "don't mean to come off sounding harsh"... well, you knew you were going to be, so why apologize for it ;) Thanks for your input though... like all other Chrisitan counsel we receive I will pray about what you said, whether God is trying to say anything through you, and if so, what that is and which things God would not be saying.

I'd like to pray with you as well,

Father God, I lift up OW and her family to you as they are trying to find a church home. I pray that you would guide their search and bring them to the church that you desire them to be in. Lord, I pray that you would use this experience as a way to increase their faith in you and help them grow closer than they have ever been to you. I pray for your Holy Spirit to guide their path and lead them to exactly ehre you want them. Please make it clear so that they are not wondering whether they have followed your leading, but will move forward with the confidence that You have spoken to them. I ask this in Jesus' precious name, Amen.

I didn't apologize for anything. I was just saying that though my post may appear as I was being harsh, I wasn't. I do however find it a little hard to understand that God would lead you to a place where He could not put you into an area of fellowship and service with the body of Christ.

We thought he had, but I guess there was another purpose in it (see Protestant board). We were going to a church and active there in the childrens ministry... until the discovered (we weren't hiding it) that my husband smokes (like we were supposed to go , "Hi were the so-n-so family and by the way, my husband is a smoker". They practically threw us out. It's not that we're trying to not find a church... we are... but maybe God is also doing something in us during the journey. (oh, and you said something about us going by a list... I didn't list in this thread what we needed in a church, I listed what we believe and was looking for opinions as to where others might think we should look... another poster here on a different board suggested I make a list of what a church would have to have/believe and what things were only minor... I thought it was a good idea).

I will pray that you hear of the Lord on where He wants you to be. I will also pray for your husband and his addiction. I used to smoke as a Christian until I came into the understanding that we who are righteous and have understanding are to quit doing anything that might cause a believer to stumble, especially those of us who may be in any type of leadership position. Paul made this in reference to meat sacrificed to an idol but the "spirit" of the implication would apply to anything.
