If you are under 30, just increasing the intensity of your workout should do the trick. If you are over 30, working out & watching your diet are the keys.

When I started working out in my 20s, I used to work out & eat more because I was starving but I still lost about 30 pounds in a few months. Now, I can work out & if I do not eat right, the working out is partially a waste of time.

Don't forget that you want to train in the zone which burns fat, this is measured as a heart rate that is a function of age. Outside of that zone, you'll be sourcing energy from other places and not from fat deposits.

For me, the 'zone' is just under where muscles start to burn and where its starting to get difficult to carry out a conversation.

Look up "fat burning zone" on google to calculate your zone.

And of course, cut out sugary, processed and high fat food. ;)

Yep, what everyone has been saying is key: cardio and a healthy diet.
Think about this: You have to burn as many calories as you eat to maintain weight; you have to burn MORE than you eat to loose weight; if you eat more than you burn, you'll gain.
The whole idea behind someone being on a 1200 calorie eating plan is because their daily activities will burn roughly that amount of calories. So, if your "usual" caloried intake now is somewhere around 2000, then slowly working down to say 1700 calories would be a good goal (And these numbers are just "general". They can and should be adjusted to fit your current needs)
Best of luck...

Is there any effective way to lose the gut more effect? I know exercise is the key but what kind.

1. Eat in moderation.

2. Stay away from the sweets and fast food(fatty foods).

3. Reduce your carbs, but don't wipe them out.

4. Stay away from drinks that contain sugar. It is best to just drink water.

5. If you have access to a treadmill, jog on it at a speed of 4.0 for 15 minutes each day, 5 times a week. Gradually increase your time and speed each week. But there is no need to go beyond 30 minutes.

6. Do crunches and knee bending sit-ups, 6 days a week. You can never overtrain your stomach. Don't worry about doing a lot of reps either. Just do each rep slowly, to maintain intensity. You should only need to do 5 sets, with no more than 15-20 reps at a time if you concentrate on quality rather than quantity. In other words, go slow.

7. And of course, keep on training for strength.

If you do what I tell you, you will notice a big difference in just 1 month.

This is not true. You will burn fat at ANY heart rate, resting, 220bpm, whatever. In the "fat burning zone" you may burn a slightly higher percentage of fat, but it's not like this is the only heart rate at which you will burn fat. If you exercise harder, in fact, you will burn more fat per minute than you will in this zone. You may, however, find it harder to maintain this rate, and it might interfere with your reading/watching tv/flirting.

Just a word to the wise.

That is true - but as you say, for unfit people who want to lose fat, its usually easier to go for 1/2 an hour in the fat burning zone than for 20 minutes in the more intensive zones where if you're unfit, its going to be much, much more unpleasant and unlikely to be continued.

But I accept your point from a scientific point of view.

Thank you, that's the point of view I intended. I would just like to encourage people to exercise at the most strenuous level they feel comfortable with if they really want to burn fat. But IANAD.

Jake007 - eventually it might. You may have to resort to cosmetic surgery.

thats what im afraid of

Don't be afraid. Live with it for a while, then go see a surgeon if you have to, no big deal. Obviously your self-esteem is really tied up with this, so it's better to just take care of it and move on to weightier (haha) matters.

You probably won't need surgery unless you have to lose well over 100lbs, and you do it really quickly.

This is a good point. It is best to lose weight gradually, 1-2 pounds a week.

This enables the body to adjust to the exercise regime, and will make it less likely for the person who is endeavoring to lose the weight to need any surgery at all.

Lots of good advice here. I only want to add that I biked one year quite a bit, but it didn't change my gut. Then I started jogging 2-3 times a week, and dropped 25 lbs. and several inches off my waist. All this was accompanied with healthy eating.

Also, when I am running a lot, I usually increase my calories and eat several small meals plus snacks during the day. This has worked for me. I don't recommend increasing your exercise and cutting back extremely on calories for the long-term. If you rev your metabolism up enough, you can eat just about anything. Some may disagree with this, but I am 44 and I can eat anything I want as long as I do it in moderation.

Find out what works for you. Enjoy your new abs!
