My wife and myself have been married for almost ten years. No children, biological situation we believe, and we also think that God has a special mission in mind for which we need be free of the usual responsibility. We work very very well together. We have a variety of skills; my wife can keep record-books very well, I do computer work, she does lots of creative artistry, I can keep a really good Sunday school class and Bible study, et cetera. We both work well with children and young adults.

We are in Topeka, Kansas, USA, which has a severe lack of good ministry to young adults, particularly right after school. If God were to provide us with about $6,000 per month via some gainful employment we two could do together, I am certain we could start something small and good to help many Topeka High students and others. The Topeka church milieu is self-centered enough that we have seen at least three attempts at such ministry closed by the churches which started them because of lack of financial income sufficient from the works to maintain them. Therefore, I am not interested in trying to build it as an arm of a local conventional church.

I believe He has led me to post this message as part of early effort to see how this might be done. Anyone have ideas?

I read your post with interest. Some questions though. What denomination? I know you said you did not want to work out of a church , but it would help to know what denomination you prefer, because there might be resources available through the denomination. Are you both employed now or were you saying you need employment income of about $6,000 per month. Or, were you saying you need about $6,000 a month to start up & operate a ministry ($6,000 for the ministry not your personal income?). I don't know what the cost of living is where you are , but with $6,000 a month I could begin a swell youth/young adult ministry. You mentioned your's & you wife's employment skills. How would that figure into the ministry you wish to start? Are you wanting to be in ministry full time - that is - do you want your sole income to come from the ministry? Do you have any formal education that qualifies you to work with (be a leader/minister) with this age group? What type of ministering did you have in mind? I can think of several ideas , but would rather know more of what you have in mind. Can you give more info?

Our church is part of the Church of God of Anderson, Indiana. It's a medium-sized group, internationally about a million people total. In a few years I will hopefully be ordained as a minister through them.

I do not think that they can be relied upon for that kind of support, but quite frankly, that's not what's best for Christian work in Topeka. In Topeka we have lots of adults who are (often justifiably) suspicious of those whose living does not come from simple gainful employment or productive work, and the reverse is true too: respect is available for those whose living does come from simple gainful employment or productive work.

The $6,000 per month is both to support Lori and myself and to fill the needs of the ministry.

We do not want the money to come from the ministry. We want it to be our money, going to the ministry.

The kinds of ministry we have in mind are (a) keeping of a safe place for companionship, friendship, and study, (b) giving of companionship, friendship, and general help, and (c) completely informal counseling.

We do not have formal education in advance of high-school diplomas.

Johnathan, thanks for the additional information. I am Southern Bapt. so I can't be much help from a denominational viewpoint. I don't know much about your denomination. I do know in the next town over from us is one of the largest churches around here. It is something like your church (not sure exactly). They have many wonderful programs & their youth ministry is one of the biggest I have seen. A few years ago they built a huge youth center and had like 200 thousand dollar youth budget. I know cost of living & salary is higher the farther north one goes. We don't live on anything near the amount you wish for. There are internet courses that you can take to further yourself in education, but I am not sure where to point you for that information. If your church ordains you, could you not work as a youth minister in your denomination? My husband is a bi-vocational minister. He works full time at his day job & part-time at the church and is on call for the church 24 hrs. a day. I can't make suggestions of job types that would give you the type of income you want, because around here wages are so low. Education is the key to most highpaying jobs. When we were in college there were places called Celebration, The Eagle's Nest, etc. that were for youth to gather at & be safe. Perhaps if you had a gym and opened it on Fri. & Sat. nights for youth , you could work a ministry in the activities. I wish you & your wife much success.

Words Of Wisdom: where there is a vision the Lord will make a provision. Your plan sounds great. First "write the vision down as the WORD says and make it plan" I believe when you do that you will no your next move. Full-time ministry is wonderful but, no for sure that you are operating in the right season because, working out of season can be a lonesome, hard and cruel journey. This was not to discourage you, but to share an experience with you and to encourage. God Bless

You might try starting a youth center in a nondenominational vien.We have one in our town that is supported by all the churches together.though it gets little in the way of funding.we jave been able to provide a pool table, fusball, satelite tv video games, and outings occaisionally. We play only christian rock music and we are there for the kids.we draw volunteers from all denoms and its a good way of uniting the christian adults too.
The 6ooo per mo. sounds like pie in the sky though.I think to get going you will have to be willing to put up with a lot less income than that. The longest journey begins with a single step and it looks as if you have already made that. What remains after commitment is putting one foot in front of the other .Keep exploring ways to get people together to accomplish this ministry,as you will have much better chance of success if you can line up in depth support. THe Kids themselves may be an asset that you have not considered. Our kids have washed cars held sales of donated goods and a few other things to raise money for THEIR youth center...do not try to do it alone or support it alone...unless you like grey hair.....let the kids in on the duties and responsibility and they will surprise you...
