Here at ChristianForums, we don't have the manpower to maintain and advertise thousands of requests, and try not to play favorites by selectively choosing which good causes to support. But this one stood out, in our view, as making such a vital world of difference to one of our friends, a specific poster here, that it cannot in good conscience be ignored.

Allan Glenn, who many of you will remember posted as WinAce, is a 20-year old young man dying of a debilitating lung disease that a transplant could "cure." His doctors are willing to proceed, deeming a lung transplant "reasonable," but in the US, inability to pay ensures he will never even be placed on a waiting list. His fiancée Jessica, and his family may soon be forced to endure their loved one becoming a shadow of his former self and gruesomely suffocating before their very eyes. As it stands, he cannot afford the operation and has no viable options except reaching out to the kindness of others, hoping that many contributing hands can save his life where bureaucracy and insurance companies have failed.

Anyone who values life can't help but be touched by this story. Further information may be found at the website his friends set up, www.Save-Allan.org
(donations can also be made, via credit card, check and other means, and suggestions are welcome).

This is not a hoax or a scam, dear friends; that website even links to published, reputable news stories about Allan. Even if you cannot contribute at the moment, we ask that you please check it out, as there are many different (often unexpected, but effective) ways to help.

In any case, you can pray that God will heal our friend Allan. :prayer:

As our Lord said, "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works" (Matthew 5:16).

Thank you for considering giving a young man some much-needed renewed hope.

I'm praying for you, Allan.

I went to your site and saved one of the fliars onto a disk. I'm seriously considering printing a few out and taking them up to my church this Sunday. If the people there are as caring as I know them to be, then I'm sure they'd be glad to help out. I believe where you live isn't that far from 'here' (Greensboro, NC).

I do hope things work out for you.

That's a fantastic idea to print out a flyer and take it to church. Every little bit will help. Also adding Allan to my prayer list. :prayer:

Allan is extremely ill.

His lung function over the past week has plummeted, and last night they had to intubate him. He's now on a ventilator.

Since the g-tube insertion a week ago, his lung function has sharply declined. They put him on bi-pap yesterday, but it wasn't working well enough--the level of CO2 in his blood was dangerously high, and his O2 sats and heart rate were fluctuating wildly.

I want to spare you most of the details, yet be honest because I know many of you are his friends and want to know what's going on. He very nearly died last night.

Right now it looks as though the infection is in his lungs only, not his bloodstream, and the g-tube site doesn't seem to be infected, either. A sputum culture revealed that he definitely has a b. cepacia infection again, and they're trying another combination of 5 antibiotics to combat it. One of his doctors thinks he may have picked up another germ or virus since his hospitalization that may be contributing to this.

His condition is critical. I visited him this morning and he had another fever--this one was about 102 degrees. Allan was very heavily sedated. They're going to try to wean him off the ventilator and back onto bi-pap as soon as they think he can handle it. Being on a ventilator has a lot of complications, especially for CF patients. He won't be able to cough out any of that infected gunk in his lungs and will have to rely on the antibiotics alone.

My poor boy.

I love him so much. There's no other way to describe yesterday other than the most excrutiating, almost unimaginable hell on earth for Allan, yet I believe if anyone could pull through this, it's him. It's my greatest hope that he'll be back online soon to tell you what happened himself, in one of his priceless rants that tears at your heart and makes you want to laugh at the same time.

I'm at home right now, but I'm going to head back over to the hospital to see Allan again soon. His dad came from New York this morning to be with him, and my grandma came from Oregon. I very much doubt Allan will be aware of my presence, and it's even more unlikely that he'll remember any of this (thank the gods) if he is. I'm going to go spend some time with him now, but I'll try to keep you guys informed.

I love him more than anything.

Jessica

Yes, he needs our prayers, but we should be donating, too!
The thought of Winace dying slowly and painfully for no reason is appalling!

Speaking of appalling, what does it say about us here that this thread is less than two pages long?
I feel shame at the thought that he may log on and see how little we actually care about him.

I've found volume of caring and words devoted to the subject are often two very different things. In this case I think there's many people out there who care, but have trouble finding the words to express themselves. It's far easier to write about the latest movie or a good television show then a life-or-death situation.

I'll do anything I can to help, though that is limited to pocket change (compared to the sums involved), and spreading the word. I wish I could do more.

Do check out the website that Erwin listed. There are a few ideas on there for spreading the word.

Allan is doing slightly better each day. They are backing him off the ventilator a bit at a time, and he is holding his own so far. Getting him off the ventilator is, as I understand it, his biggest challenge. He is still heavily sedated right now.

Jessica sounded tired last night when I spoke to her on the phone. :(
